Stereotypes in music

What are some gender and genre stereotypes in music? Like for example how people automatically link rock music to males, and pop music to females. And how if you say you listen to some goth band people automatically assume you're a goth. It's for a school speech and I'm trying to get opinions from various people, and it would be great if people could contribute. Thanks in advance

Forums: The Bar,

when i think "musicians", i think "alcoholics".

when i think 'alcoholics' i think 'winston peters'

when i think 'winston peters' i think ‘green parrot café’

. . .sorry, I thought we were playing a game?

Might be helpful to think that you can’t have a stereotype without an element of truth, otherwise the stereotype would be different – if that makes sense?

//you can’t have a stereotype without an element of truth

generally there is some element of truth, but it can also just be that it's plausible or face-valid (ie, it appears to be true, but actually isn't)

when i think 'green parrot café' i think ‘the squits’

when i think 'the squits’ i think ‘night out on speights old dark & dodgy chicken korma'

musicians = trendsetters (to the all-seeing audience), the in-crowd, often cliquey with other bands (without meaning to sound negative, i mean it makes sense)

musicians = open-minded creative clever OR alternatively narrow-minded blinker-eyed munter

As for girls/boys: girls get kudos; instant added interest to boys

hard to generalise innit

//musicians = open-minded creative clever OR alternatively narrow-minded blinker-eyed munter

Ha ha! So true for so many musos, especially when mixed with alcohol. I also think the OR could possibly be replaced with an AND.

I think of musicians as idealists, and as perpetually late.

girls playing guitar in rock bands can only play the bass.

the ultimate stereotypical band...

a tall, skinny, good looking male bass player.

a short, squat, absentminded drummer.

an egotistical, disorganised, alcoholic lead singer.

a highly strung, pedal-fetishing lead guitarist.

you forgot - straight, but extremely homosexual looking keyboardist

aha! damn right.

// straight, but extremely homosexual looking keyboardist

they're my favourite.

mmmm knob twiddling.

like that guy from Rammstein?

errrr.... no.

do you mean more like this?

Hun - angelfire blocks direct image linkages.

Speaking of hot keyboardists, surely I'm not the only one who thinks that Goodshirt's stands like he's getting head when he plays?

Boy Singer/songwriters are angsty, and fixated with their exes.
Girl singer/songwiters are hippies and infinately boring,

Drummers are dumb,

Young men that play EMO are from privilaged backgrounds,

People that sit down and play slide guitar are either surfers/christians or blind

Indie kids have mopish fringes and a difficulty communicating with people outside their immediate sphere,

Hard rockers wear tatoos and leather, and sing about sex and the size of their schlongs,

Bands with crap names make crap music

Girls that go the the Kings Arms are all easy*

Stereotypical band members girlfriend = the only one who knows the ALL words and signs loud enough for everyone in the pub to know about it while dancing like a crazed monkey at the front of the stage and giving off icy stares & the odd elbow to any other chick looking at their man on stage.

more music for the deaf?

ahh yeah sorry - 'sings' loud enough not signs loud enough

//more music for the deaf?

Qotsa have a sample of this on a hidden track on their last cd 'Songs For The Deaf'

I've noticed band members girlfriends being the ones standing at the back or side of stage with one arm around their waist looking kinda uncomfortable.

female drummers are crap (Note: I don't agree on that one)

...or if they're not shit, they must be a lesbian.

Female drummers are short, skinny, and wear dickies.

Mmm, Meg White...

Mmmm Donna C. ( Torry Castellano)

If you are looking for stereotypes you needent look any further than 'sex, drugs and rock and roll' i.e. "I joined a band so I could get laid and take a shitload of mind altering substances".....
OK maybe that is a bad example
Try these
Guitarists are incredibly egotistical and live for the 30 seconds that they let rip on a lead break
LSD- lead singers disease. Singers are incredibly egotistical, which is why they won't give the poor axe slingers their 30 seconds of fame. They're only there to get laid anyway
Bassists'They are the sensible, level headed ones' (or in guitar speak- they are too ham fisted to do anything flashy, which is why they picked bass in the first place. They are also very egotistical but would rather seethe about that bassist in the other band who...)
Drummers hit things and little else.Because they are at the back of the stage they are the biggest party animals with habits of driving cars into swimming pools and other self destructive stuff they are generally piss heads and while you only have to punch things into a drum machine once they are kept on for comic purposes
Bands are a collection of people who pretend to all be best friends but secretly hate each other and will spend most of their later lives blaming the drugs for their own ego fuelled bust-ups

Can I just add this DOES NOT reflect anyone in Ishtar past or present... except for the love of the guitar solo bit.

i totally agree. i am a singer and I am thoroughly egotistical. i hate my band

//Guitarists are incredibly egotistical and live for the 30 seconds that they let rip on a lead break

Speaking of which.....

What's the difference between a guitarist and term investment?

i don't know.
