**Blind Melon**

If anyone is thinking "is that the band with the video of the bee girl dancing in a field from the 90s" then yes that them.
That song No Rain, was a commercial hit, but their greatest work was largly ignored by the musical world.
Their debut album Blind Melon was a masterpiece, real, raw, genious, their follow up Soup was excellent also, very diverse and original.
They released Nico, their third album after the lead singer Shannon Hoon died of a cocaine overdose in October 1995.

This band will always be my main passion and one true love when it comes to music. If you don't know them, you should check them out. Its unlike anything else.

This year I fly to America to visit the grave of Shannon Hoon, I've been in contact with his mother and she's invited me to stay with her for the duration of the vigil, being a weekend long event where melon fans gather to his grave and celebrate his life and music.

I know this all seems bizarre and unnatural to a lot of people, but you'd be amazed how far reaching the music of Blind Melon is, and how enduring. They started in the early 90s and only released three albums and only had one major hit, but they have fans from countries like Kuwait, Peru and Serbia,as well as hoardes of fans in the US and Canada.

I don't know many bands that have such a great influence and inspire such loyalty in so many without real commercial recognition.
Maybe it was a sign of the times, the Great Music of the 90s. But still new fans find Melon.

Does anyone remember them?
Does anyone like them?

Shit I'd kill for some more kiwi fans!

...anyone?

Forums: The Bar,

with you on that one.. absolutely luv blind melon. I've got self titled, soup & nico... tones of home was the first track I heard back in the early 90's.

Funny thing about this band, they sneak up on you and suck you in! :)

Fave tracks include; I wonder, sleepy house (what an awesome track that is!!) soak the sin, tones of home, 2x4, vernie, st andrews fall, mouthful of cavaties, soul one damn! all of them...

Blind Melon = Elevator music.

theyre ok- definitely better things to listen to tho

Sound familiar but no i cannot remember any of there material, 9 years is too long for a band ive long neglected in my youth.

just another middle of the road band where a member dies and suddenly they are one of the most inspiring bands of all time.

I thought Hoon's backing up Axl on 'Dont Cry' was his finest moment

'there's a heaven abooooove you baaaaby'

don't you crieieieieieieieieieieieieieiieieieieieieieieieieieieieieieieiiiiieeeeeeiiiieeeiiieeeiiee........

doctor o you got me again man.

Dude I thrashed that cassingle till the shit snapped, straight up.

Hopefully it's safe to admit that, now that g'n'f'n'r are ironic and all....

it's ok i'm the only person i know who wants to see def leppard live. honestly.

Make that two, hombre.

Fuck, I would give my right arm to see Armaggedon It live...

(No offense to the one-armed master Rick Allen, a true inspiration to single-limbed skin-beaters worldwide)

it would be great! i predict that the leps will be the next band to become ironically cool.

of course by live, you mean arena live!

Was it a coke overdose? Well no wonder they never got big. You go to rehab for coke, you die for heroin. Sheesh, the only instrument I can play is the recorder and even I know that.

God, I'm getting nightmare images of thousands of screaming fangirls sobbing over the grave of Bryan Bell. He probably fits the bill except that he's not dead yet.

Its ok Heather, you're probably taller than them and can push your way to the front ok.

hehe

//he's not dead yet.

I know a guy who knows a guy who has this cousin who knows a guy . . . . it can be arranged

wasnt there something medically wrong with his voice? it sure sounded like it to my ears.
i dont think i can ever get over the fucking tap dancing bee in their video.
for this i dispise them, and curse all their fans.
i bet they are probably canandian too.

What's your childhood trauma buddy? Or do you live to define "Nasty, ignorant, small minded arsehole"?!
Either way, to judge a band and their fans on a character in their video is pretty fucking stupid right.
For what it's worth, pretty much every melon fan dislikes the bee girl connection, MTV used and abused it and it was their greatest commercial success but by no means an indication of their true talent.

Blind Melon had many fans before they got famous, when they were famous and after he died but I wouldn't say that people started finding them inspiring just because he died. They aren't a well known band, and unlike Nirvana who seemed to grow millions of fans after Kurt died, melon fans are still pretty much a breed of their own. His death certainly didn't give them any more commerical success.

If you don't like them that's cool, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and tastes, but if you haven't heard them then check them out, keep an open mind and you won't be disappointed ;O)

Anyway, right on Acidess, nice to see another kiwi melon.

ahem...
obvious misunderstanding here... i love blind melon too! just putting my views forth...
so what happens at this memorial shindig youre going too?

*nods Amen on that Pixie :)

ignore the negative nancys.. not all of us are blessed with an ear that can identify music for the soul!!
With legendary bands like Blind Melon, you either get it or you don't.

wasn't there some tv programme about people visiting graves of famous musicians a while back...
i'm sure one of the things was about this guy,..but i could be completely wrong.. i wasn't really watching it that intensely...

ummm it really didn't sound like you loved them but rightyo...
Anyway the vigil is over two days, being at the grave and his mother is there and his family and people just meet each other and put things on the grave, sing etc then on Sunday theres a concert with melon coverbands :) people from all over the world come together to remember him, say goodbye, celebrate his life and music.

I believe they have these vigils for Kurt and Layne aswell, and a lot of other artists. It's an awesome idea and a great opportunity for fans to meet and share experiences.

and yes! that show was Graveside Groupies and he was on it.

thats right...i found it all terribly amusing...maybe if i was in the area at the time i'd show up, but i wouldn't travel for it....'d rather go see some bands who still existed ;)

toes across the floor

fish across face

I love blind melon. gertie

"Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry todaaaaay"

oh, oh, oh, oh

...so stay with me and we'll have it made..
I used to think that song was written for me,love Blind Melon, don't really know too many other people that do though.
