Awesomeness in music videos

Just revisited this site about Michael Gondry, who's recently got some attention for directing the Jim Carey movie 'Eternal Sunshine of a title no one ever finishes in conversation...'

I'd somehow failed to take in how many great music vids he'd done - I've been a fan of that Cibo Matto vid for years and years (props to src, my fellow top fiver :) but hadn't realised it was him behind all those Björk ones, that Kylie one, Massive Attack, Beck, Chemical Bros... lots of goodies.

Love this about the video for 'Fell in Love With a Girl':

"I really like the basic-ness of the music - one voice, one guitar, and one drum. I like this concept, and I thought it was very close to the primary color of the Lego blocks." On the video's creation: "We shot a very basic video of the band [in London], we edited it and then we had a program that pixelized the video, roughly the size of the Lego blocks and then we printed each frame [25 frames per second] on paper. Then we had an animation team building up Lego blocks to match each frame. Then we reshot each of those frames on a film camera. We didn't have enough Legos to do more than five frames at a time, so after five frames were shot [the Legos] were demolished to build the next five frames."

(still haven't seen or heard that song, but nice quote)

I love the fact he uses stop motion and projection and techniques like that where people might use computer generated animation.

Forums: The Bar,

Theres alot to be said for good old fashioned animation. It seems to posess a warmer, less precise feel than computer animation. I'd always wondered how that video was made.

As that quote demonstrates, he's not some anti-technology luddite, he just knows what he likes the look of most. Yay for that. :)

I've looked at a DVD called 'Director's Series, Vol. 3 - The Work of Director Michel Gondry'... might become my first DVD purchase eva.

The Spike Jonze DVD is awesome as well, you have to get that one. The Chris Cunningham one is fairly average, but might as well get it to complete the series.

Thanks for responding politely even tho I called you src. ;)

Oh, I didn't even see that. :D

you haven't heard the song?? how'd you manage that?!

luckily (for my flatmates) my white stripes obsession has subsided to the point where now my fangirlness is only expressed through clumsy reproductions of guitar riffs

but yeah, michel gondry is way cool. has anyone seen 'human nature' (i think it's called), a movie he and Kaufman did before 'eternal sunshine'?

// anyone seen 'human nature'

yup, it's pretty good, a bit clumsy, but mostly charming in places. Mirando Otto is very cute in it, as is Tim Robbins. and Rhys Ifans .. infact the whole film is cute, but it's no patch on Eternal Sunshine.

// you haven't heard the song?? how'd you manage that?!

Don't watch TV, don't listen to the radio, don't have any friends who like the White Stripes (at least in the same city as me). Pretty easy formula. :)

Actually, I do get to see some music TV channel at the gym. So I've heard the Joss Stone cover plenty of times, but never the White Stripes version... Heh. The one with the repeating triangles and everything black, red or white used to get played a bit.

Fascinating, eh?

*sigh*

//everything black, red or white

Oh you mean THAT white stripes video. Right. Heh.

seven nation army, i think?

Lots of triangles expanding from the centre of the screen, cycling through those three colours, to give a sort of zooming down a tunnel effect... with the band playing in the middle.

Reminds me a bit of the poster for a 'Clockwork Orange', but really just because of the colours and the triangle shape. :)

not hangover-friendly

Sorry, I was being cheeky. Just the whole them always being white&black&red thing reminds me of when we were trying to figure out who was who in a Decepticonz photo we were trying to caption and we had the writer on the phone and we were like "well he's a biggish polynesian guy in a Mareko tshirt..."

It's interesting (no it isn't) how you manage to make every single one of your posts about you, Joanna.

more interesting than you razorwit
