Yes, its true! Melbourne Street-press magazines are calling Betchadupa their own!
e.g 1. On a list of "International" acts (meaning OVERSEAS! ie -NZ!), they were listed under local acts touring (this is also the case with Salmonela Dub)
e.g 2. Australia's resent tour of Australian high profile bands, called "live'n local" (a Coco Cola Promo), had Betchadupa as one of the high profile Australian bands!!
AHHHH!!! Is nothing sacred!!!??? Is this a choice made by the band, to be SEEN as an Aus band??!! What r the benifits??!! WHY!!?? Wheres the sence of national pride???!!!
Id like to hear opinions on what people think about this, cause it makes me ANGRY!!!!

I am in 3 bands currently, I'll forgive u because I didnt make that clear.
I am in a band called SodaCrush (aka Nevadream) 5 members , 4 of which r Australian. This is my primary project and my main focus.
Also a band called "the Marlboros" conaining one Kiwi "me" an American and 2 Australians.
My 3rd and final project is secret. And conains a complete line up of kiwis. 3 of us. (it has been an agreement between the 3 of us to keep it secret, even with our close friends)
I was in an all female band called Mjuica. We relocated to Melbourne over 3 years ago. But disbanded when I moved to Qld.

When I mentioned the decent of 2 of my guitarists, they have parents from asia. From an outsiders veiw we look very muticultural, which I love! They were both born in Australia tho.
The linked mp3s r old demo tracks, by the last drummer who was fired directly after recording (I am a new member) We r re-recording soon with our current line up. Very soon I hope

In an ideal world, I don't think a band has any say over what the press will or won't write about them.
Of course, there are 'journalists' who will simply cut and paste the press release after conveniently replacing a few words... which is fine, of course... the truth IS out there...

I fully agree that bands should make sure that the press correctly say where bands are from, I'm australian but when I get into certain bands I would rather know that they are from NZ rather than just lumping them all in as 'local'.
however, as far as becthadupa...you guys are completely welcome to keep them as your own because they suck balls.

Yes, its not really my thing, but I did see them play a good gig a few months ago, so I dont think I hate them. Salmenella dub has been called a local band for a year (maybe cause they do play here a fair bit). I think I actually find that more annoying but Ive had a year to get used to that. One more thing, correct me if Im wrong, but didnt Shihad get called best australian rock band of the year, last year by Rolling Stone??

REAALLLY dont think they would have. Im sure they r proud of being nzers, to the point I would feel cheeky asking. When the world notices a talented New Zealander, they r normally seen by NZ then Aus next, which in a way, is a gate way to the rest of the world. If good nz musos r descovered in Aus I dont think that would make them want to be Australian. I sure as hell dont want to lose my kiwiness. All my kiwi friends r all very proud of being nzers. We r in a way representing NZ, and r just trying to make NZ music more accessable to a wider audiance and bigger crowds.

auckland airport seems fine for most, the very fact that you refer to australia as being a gateway to 'rest of the world' indicates how local it is.

Thier are alot of good NZ acts that issolate themselves to just NZ, due to a lack of Management and or funds. We never hear about them anywhere else in the world. An airport is useless if u dont use it. Touring band tend to come to Aus first, if they get the right kind of backing.

Yes point taken, Im glad u enjoyed seeing me play @ the Southlander (that must have been some time ago?)
Also, I never try and offend anyone, unless they attack me personally like Rope did. He basically called me a slut. Sorry u got tied up in that ugly event.
If u do decide to check out the Dux de Lux its @ the art centre on the corner of Montreal and Hereford. I always would go there on a Thursday (when I was unemployed that was pay day) It WAS generally the best night to go. It was indie original bands, always fun. My last visit 6 months ago, I found the prices of drinks had gone up, and I had no idea who the bands were that were playing (because Ive been away ofcourse) Not sure what its like these days. Please dont take ur flatmates word until u give it a chance yourself tho.
B4 we move on,
//I can never work out why they go to australia first, i guess because its......... 'local'
Ok, the official defination of 'local' is as follows Christainity....
Belonging to a certain place, ONES OWN NEIGHBOURHOOD, inhabitant of a particular district.
*(Oxford Dictionary).
Betchadupa are a touring band. Have they relocated??? (so they would be "inhabitating")
If their home is still NZ, they "belong" to NZ technically, + they were born and bread there (except the drummer).
Is it a mistake by Aus Media? Was it the band? Or is Aus deliberatley calling them one of their own, maybe in the hopes that when the wider world discovers them, it will make Aus look better to the International Music Industry. Nz will be left out and not recognised AGAIN! Do u kinda see what Im talking about now mate?
//If their home is still NZ, they ...
//If their home is still NZ, they "belong" to NZ technically, + they were born and bread there (except the drummer).
This whole discussion seems to have got a bit out of hand, but you seem to have a couple of factual innaccuracies here. As you note, Matt Eccles was born in Australia, but has still probably spent the better part of his life in Australia (moved here during high school I believe). I'm not sure where Liam was born, but Neil was living in melbourne on a fairly permanent basis for a good part of Liam's life, so I think it's reasonably safe to assume that Liam spent a fair bit of time there as well. I'm not questioning that they don't have strong NZ links, but I think it's also clear that at least half of the band have a fairly clear relationship with Australia. You might also notice that many people tend to play up their links to certain countries depending on where they are at the time. the Lord of the Rings stars tend to gush about NZ, and they may do so overseas, but I think it would be perfectly normal that they would do so more here. Thus, it wouldn't seem terribly outrageous for Betchadupa to emphasize their affinity with Australia when they are in Australia, and to emphasize their affinity with NZ when they are in NZ.

// May be safe to say that they r an ...
// May be safe to say that they r an AUSTRALASIAN band then
I certainly wouldn't argue that they are not an Australasian band. However, I think it is worth considering that people can have multiple identies, and that the same should go for bands. I feel attached to the town that I was born in, even though I don't have a lot of memories of it. I have far more memories of the town I grew up in, so I still identify with there, but I am also very much a part of where I live now as well. Recently, when I was at an interview in Wellington, I proclaimed my attachment to Wellington (even though I have never lived there, but that's not to say I'm not unconnected). In this way people have identities and attachments with different places, and different people and different groups. I can certainly say I'm a new zealander, and an australasian, but i'm also from canterbury and otago, and I'm happy to have multiple allegiances. Some say I'm a traitor for associating with otago AND canterbury. However, I think it's perhaps a little harder, but a little truer to yourself, to accept that identity is a complex and multi-faceted thing.

I'm born, breed and still live in Wgtn, there are other places that I feel part of, places that I have family or where they have come from and even some places that i have been.
I feel comfortable in calling myself Scottish/Engilsh/Spanish and a Kiwi because thats my heritage.

I see what u mean! Im half Dutch, and was raised in a small west coastal town called Hari Hari. I have a strong connection with the place of course, but I would by no means called my self a "Hari Harian"
Anyway, yeah Ive made up my mind, Betchdupu must be a Australasian band!

oops....jeepers creepers, i'm just here for some kind of debate on the topic, rope isn't even on this thread, sorry i don't get out much, i've seen you play at the southlander, i enjoyed that gig, i wasn't in a quandrey as to whether you were a new zealander or whatever, to me it's 100% about the music, i think betchadupa's 'we're aussie' campaign maybe able to help break the ice with people such as yourself who pay too much attention to the country of origin/politics/anything else, personally it's all academic, as a musician you should possibly know to pay less attention to PR/media and just focus on what's important.

personally babushka i don't give a rat's kidney either way, i'm at home with my cultural and national identity to the point i wouldn't complain if sri lanka was going to call me local if it could enhance my career as a snot sculptur. people have the inherent right to claim to be from anywhere if they like, as a post further down points out, betchadupa are themselves actually claiming to to be from australia so it's not like a bunch of aussies formed a lynch mob and collectively hammered an aussie flag up liam's ass
