BEST NZ ROCK'N'ROLL GUITARIST!?

Apparently Connan Hosford (of new Welly band 'Connan and the Mockasins') is the BEST young rock'n'roll guitarist New Zealand has ever seen!!?
Were going to check the band out in Wellington at Katipo Cafe on the 25th. We were wondering if anyone knows him/of him or where he has come from?!?

Forums: NZ Music,

1. Billy TK (by far)
2. Dave Dobbyn
3. Tim Finn

I've heard that TK has a bit of an ego problem too... oh well it's not a personality contest is it? The guy CAN play.

1. ronald james/what it is

it is true.
he is amazing. i was blown away. jimi hendrix styles.

thanks alot! :)

*wait for a comment from saul* ;)

¿do i fuckin have to fuckin state the fuckin obvious--- AGAIN?

no

I saw Connan Hosford play late last year in a band called Grampa Moff, and he was just stunning! although I could hear some of his influences (ie. Clapton, Hendrix, BB King) he was adding something else that I just could not put my finger on.......I have seen alot of great blues guitarists through the States in my time, but this kid has the goods.

Is he a kiwi?

yes, from wellington i presume.

Jon and Phil from Pacifier... best rock guitarists in NZ no question

hooray for unabashed dimwittedness

Asphinctersayswhat? :P

now i repeat rob lowes line

I like to play

fuk yea jon and phil from shihad

Christopher Walken if we must nit-pick ;oP

Well, judging by devolve, Phil could sweep and shred. Definitely not the best guitarist NZ has ever seen though.

I like Deja Voodoo.

I've said it before, and if we're talking rocknroll, Mark Graham from Tough Love is unsurpassed on guitar.

Dion from D4

Connan from Connan Hosford and the Mockasins

he sucks. Y dont D4 release anything new anyway instead of touring an album that is older than the undies im wearing???

Haven't seen the Connan guy so can't comment (great name tho' he doesn't play bare chested in a loin cloth does he?), but as far as NZ guitarists go, I don't feel like i can let this thread go by without putting in a word for David Mitchell of Goblin Mix/Explod Budgies/3Ds/Plagal Grind/Ghost Club etc fame. A real master of technique and feel. I could have sworn his guitar was possessed by the most agonised of Port Chalmers ghosts and demons. Just amazing sounds and meoldies - no one trick pony either - able to handle the most howling of twisted headbangers or play with real sensitivity - the sort of player who you only have to hear one chord or one note, and you know it's him. I could go on all day!

I've heard rumours he might be visiting NZ this year, let's hope they're true!

Also special mention to Chris Heazlewood, unlikely to wind up in "Guitar" magazine, but bloody great to listen to anyhow. Anyone know if he's still playing anywhere?

If you're in Wellington look out for a guy called Matt Smithies. He was a 3rd year jazz student at Massey, fuckin amazing.

What does "A real master of technique" mean to you?

To me? Well, i reckon it means heaps of things. Tone, Ideas, Speed, Space, Feel... Many things. I think people get carried away with playing high and fast. Sure, that can be good fun.. But at some level I reckon pretty much anyone can do it. I reckon a guitarist that can solo with clean tone and not have to rely on HUGE distortion is the best. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion..

ok, I wasn't actually asking you, but that's cool. You're on the wrong track there. Feel and ideas does not come under technicality.

Well what does 'a real master of technique' mean to you?

who cares? I just want to see if my views and dmin's views differ

it means totally zilch to me

Shut your fucking mouth lena. If i wanted you to talk, I'd rattle your cage.

come near my cage & you lose your arms- cost a lot to pay a doc to pull them out yo ass & sew em back on

such anger... you got some rage issues goin on there buddy

undefeated that is...

That was weak lena. You fail.

ha ha ha......
Damnnn undeafeated and lena got it going on!!!!!!

its that kind of frustrated rage you get in 3 yr olds- when they cant have their own way- but just cant understand why- so their id goes- ok- a tantyll get me what i want in the end

That arguement was one of the top arguements i seen so far!

i am weak undiefixated- im old- i spend a lot of time on crutches at the mo- but that dont matter here- it aint your body that counts- it must be embarrassing to think that such as i can run rings round your feeble wit

I went to high school with Matt Smithies. Nice guy, great guitar player.

Dunno about the best nz guitarist
the best nz Bassist i would say would hands down go to Fud from cripple Mr onion
that guy is fucking insane.. makes me want to quit everything

yeh- hes so cool

So lena is fud?

no- fud wishes he was lena

Fuddy = 0 Rock n Roll

I've seen Connan play before & he is just amazing! He's not a "tech" player but man hes got soul for a young guy. Famous quote, "It's easy to play the blues, but hard to feel".

Also, It's not just his playing that makes him stand out....he's a very natural performer. He moves & looks good on stage. Huge stage presence, hard to take your eye of! And ofcoarse all the girls seem to love him and think hes cute.

Not many people seem to have this talent, & when you chuck that in with been an ace guitarist, thats were you get a rockstar.

I'm not saying all guitarists want to be rockstars, all I'm saying is that only a very VERY small percentage of top guitarists are capable of becoming rockstars.....
