more computer problems

1. My screen is developing a creeping purpleish hue on the left hand side. Additionally, the display is slowly rotating. Soon I will be viewing Mr. Gay Pride monitor with my neck at 45 degrees. Anybody been able to fix these things?

2. Oh and, to get all the options about screen position and alignment etc, there are buttons on the monitor. However, to actually change the levels there's a wheel that you move either way, below the screen. Only problem is that it's crazy, moves the wrong way and jumps the levels around. Anyone been able to fix these before?

Help please - or should I just take it to a shop? If anyone else is having probs feel free to post them. Cheers.

Forums: The Bar,

Do you have speakers close to your computer screen? Because the magnets in them can affect the screen if they're too close to it.

In your screen options, find the one that is the kindof magnet looking thing with a slash through it, and click on it or whatever. (use the buttons on the monitor) It should fix up anything that has magnet problems (if its that) and you should move anything with powerful magnets further from your monitor.

Otherwise, I dunno what it would be. Magnet problems usually make the picture on your screen bend a bit, they can change the colour or make odd wavy lines appear.

Oh and if its slowly rotating, it means you've got a resolution or screen setting with a refresh rate that is too low, so you should try and put it up to a higher frequency.

If it's not the magnet symbol, it might also say "de-gauss", which is what the process is called.

Cheers - the problem is that damn wheel is used to cycle through the settings so it's almost impossible to go through any options. Is there a refresh rate option for Win98... and where? My stereo speaker is right beside the screen, could that be doing it? The monitor speakers are internal.

Oh and why the hell have I received over 300 views? That's a pretty poor view/post rate by any measure.

You & your computer problems have become an ongoing source of entertainment & laughs for the community.

That's my guess...
"hahaha, Jimi's at it again"

Actually, that is kinda weird...not that you're not getting any responses (that's pretty standard, innit), but why in the hell are so many people even interested??? :-P

I'm hoping you get some helpful advice from The Lance 4000.

jimi is super popular

//My stereo speaker is right beside the screen, could that be doing it?

It could be causing a problem, move it away from the screen and see what happens.

Yep that's probably it. Speakers have magnets in them.
I've also noticed that halogen lamps make monitors wig out as well.

Re: refresh rates, I think this works under windows 98:

Right click on your desktop and choose "properties"

In the window that comes up, switch to the "settings" tab.

You should have a button "advanced". Click on it.

If you've got this far, you should have a "monitor" tab in the new window that comes up. Click on it.

Under the monitor tab you should have a drop down box with refresh rates in it.

If this doesn't help I don't know what to do.

Mmmmmm. Degauss.

Should I ignore the message that when I pick a custom refresh rate I should first make sure my monitor supports it otherwise all hell will break loose? I swear Microsoft use terror tactics eh. (when I pick 'optimal' the screen goes too fat and shitty).

Mega I prefer to be up front about my relative technical illiteracy in this realm of uber geeks rather than them finding out one day when they ask me to crank some html. Now I have over 1200 views... is there a counter fucking up somewhere?

Um, I think there is potential for making your screen unreadable, possibly completely black. If this happens you should be able to hold down F5 next time you start up and get the option to go into Safe Mode. Safe Mode will look poo, but at least things will be visible and you can go in and set the refresh rate back to something less evil.

Please don't hold me liable if this doesn't work!!! :)

Actually if Win98 is anything like NT, 2000 or XP then once you apply the new settings it will prompt you to say within 15 seconds whether you want to keep that setting. If this is the case and it all turns to custard you simply wait the 15 seconds out and it will revert.

aka's boy did the whole purple screen thing
magnet?
can't remember exactly what?

Bloody hell JJ, can I ask if you can remeber who was babysitting for us that night?
the fact you can't even remember how he did it, is a very good sign of your supervision skills.

Hahaha, yeah
Dear Jimi
If you are stupid enough to be holding a magnet up to the screen:
Stop now.

or stupid enough to let a 10 year old boy hold a magnet up to your screen, stop now.

hey
i've grown now
i'm bigger than that
i won't let it rule me
i want to smash computers

it wasn't MY screen!
