Did anyone else see the article in the Dominion Post that I saw a week or so ago about the $3,500 grant to bands filming in Wellington?
I think Rhian Sheenan was one of the first to qualify.
The thing is as far as the internet is concerned this deal does not exist. Was I dreaming?

You weren't dreaming. The idea is that once you have scored yourself a NZonAir grant, the Council tops it up by $3500 as long as you film on location in Wellington. It's to promote the city.
Sounds like a great incentive to me.

when i saw this dealie on Night line about a month back, I got the impression that the deal was the NZOA grant would be topped up with money and discount hire of equipement, equal to but not greater than the grant itself.
I must admit I was suprised not to see it as a hot topic over the next few days.

Nah seriously it's good to finally see a council getting behind it's artists. Well done WCC!

wcc gives you an extra 1500 in cash (after seeing your receipts) and you also get a a basic 16mm kit at a cost of $500 per day (including GST) through Panavision Wellington... (cheeeeeaap)
what you gotta do is -
-have nzonair funding for music viddie
- produce this music video in the Wellington region (the area governed by Wellington, Hutt City, Upper Hutt and Porirua City Councils).
- Agree to include the “Made in Wellington” logo in your music video
i questioned them on having to shoot it 16mm.. and chris from smart wellington said "Panavision deal is not obligatory -- nor is 16mm -- as long as you can provide the necessary proof in your claim that the vid was "made in wellington"."
his email is - Chris smartwellington.co.nz (nice guy)
so - it sounds bloody good to me.. yes amino - you must now shoot all you viddies down here.. p-s im coming up your way next week - so watch out

it's product placement, but that's nothing new... Please someone do a video featuring anti-Kerry Prendergrast imagery and it will attain a happy balance.

You can usually get a camera kit out of Pana for about $700 if you tighten the thumb screws enough, but $500 is pillage. Do you get their first born son too?
Am interested to know why they want to look at receipts. I assume the $1500 is to go into the making of the video, but does that mean that producers/directors put up the money first and then get it back from the council after they have spent $6500? Or will it go to those luckless buggers in Post Production as money left after the shoot? I like the accountability of it all though. There's nothing worse than seeing an NZOA video that looks like it was done by a 5 year old with a mighty pad and some crayons, and someone's pockets got lined.
Anyway you look at it it's a good thing, and it brings us back up to the funding levels when the NZOA grant was first established. Since then, the level has stayed at $5K, and given the inflation we've had since then that's a 30% drop - a $5000 music video grant in 1991 is equal to a $6600 grant today!
