I was just thinking it must hurt acutely being so right all the time. Nothing personal y'know - I'd have hoped you would have picked up on that lena.
Aka I don't think it's one of the best examples of filmmaking ever or anything - but it's a damn solid movie in terms of construction, it deals with themes unflinchingly that NZ is always wary of acknowledging, and while the acting is a bit wooden at the start it gets better all the way through. That's my general opinion anyway.
How come there's still so much haterising between forum members? I would have thought that you'd have gotten it all out of your systems by now, sheesh.
i was going to watch it last night, in fact i did for about 2 seconds, What really flew me into the Rage is that they have Killed it by going 16:9 - Urgh black bars kill everything, i hate them. 16:9 TVs are like 7 grand or something - stupid rich people.
That was only for the first few minutes Luci - while the credits were flashing up! So thay don't have to redo the credits so they fit into a 4:3 tv ya see ...
Would you honestly rather watch the cut down version of a film than the widescreen one? I always find it better to have widescreen, even if your screen isn't actually wide :) At least it stays true to the original artistic intention, sortof.
Well i actually watched it for the first time ever last night, well part of it and it made me cry...i tuned in at the part where Grace hangs herself...i can't agree or disagree with whether it is a classic or not without watching the whole thing.
if anything its a shit movie that is thought of as a great because of the level of violence, on tv you dont see anything so graphic so the meat heads out there think 'man, this shit if fucken cool dawg, he got fucked up'. more proff that the common new zealander is a shithead.
Whatever. The film was critically acclaimed here and abroad. While this doesn't mean anything about its popular quality, it shows that OWW engages on a higher level for those who are intelligent enough to have a think about it.
ok, forget about that. Selective reading. However, I still think you're included in the shithead category. You're a wannabe bogan from Rotorua. Don't even claim anything remotely intellectual about yourself.
I don't think I'm particularly intelligent for liking OWW. Then again, I reckon your viewpoint is really simplistic and limited; have you really thought about why different people might like this film?
//it shows that OWW engages on a higher level for those who are intelligent enough to have a think about it.
or if you like..
you can only see the emperor's clothes if you have good taste.
And by the way, again: I wasn't trying to insinuate that I was remarkably intelligent merely for enjoying OWW, despite appearances. I was just pointing out that NonBreeds view seemed very limited and not overly considered - hell, I was just trying to provoke him into contemplating and elaborating his opinion.

Not much point wasting your time over nonbreed - he just learned a new word a couple of weeks ago. Just put a sheet over his head and eventually he'll go to sleep.
Well if im able to say & I am I think its a great movie. It portrays the trueness of what I've seen around the ways of those maori's who are not the true maori's as in the title. In a way its a stupid movie for those patch like people who like to be tough..kinda showing how wannabe these people are!!! All in all I guess its great for that reason..STEREOTYPICAL
//those patch like people who like to be tough..kinda showing how wannabe these people are
Hmmm, sort of. The only true 'patches' in the film are Nig's gang, and I reckon we're supposed to have a bit of respect for them. They're going back to traditional Maori living, in a depressingly urban environment - they live in a fortified compound, ignore Pakeha authority, have strong family-like bonds etc.

what fucking movie were you watching, JH christ on a bicycle, jim.
i liked it. whats becomes of the broken hearted was kinda cringey at times but i liked it too. i also liked seeing places i grew up in, though i don't remember seeing any gangs like that around.
thats because gangs dont all live in huge shelters, they do have huge fences with cameras etc, but behind them is a ... dun dun dun.... house. and also, why were they all carrying car parts everywhere??im sure gang members, the hundreds of them who live in their huge gang shelter have more to do than repair cars.
I saw it for the first time on Sunday. It was pretty good, especially for a New Zealand film. Pretty well shot, the story was interesting. It was annoying that the guy who joined the gang's part of the story was well and truely pushed into the background (not to mention that his tatoo's were added in extra quick time and with no inflamation of the skin - I may be wrong but the scenes before and after indicated very little time had passed since we had last seen him).
But if it raised people's awareness that this sort of thing happens in New Zealand then it was worthwhile I reckon, regardless of its artistic merit.

The Once Were Warriors theme.
Well not note-for-note, but it's close enough to conclude that's where it was born.
