Latty made me think of this one.
At the moment New Zealand is stuck with 2 official National Anthems (God Defend New Zealand and God Save the Queen) and One unofficial Anthem (Pokarekareana). With a NZ Republic Inevitable i beg the Question. Do We Need God Save the Queen?
I Reckon we dont, Surely GSTQ is only played during unofficial engagements and during royal visits, but Being a country 24 hours by plane from the UK and Independant from the UK Since 1907 (fully 40 years later) Like the Royal Family Itself - It is inconceivable to Keep God Save The Queen as it does not fit in with The Identity of New Zealand as it is today.
But definatley Keep God Defend New Zealand and make Pokarekareana a second offical anthem.

GDNZ should not be our national anthem ...
GDNZ should not be our national anthem it is a dreary song and the lyrics are far from uplifting and are all to often usually sung in a monotone drawl.
Our anthem should inspire us and make us feel great ourselves and our country, we should be proud to sing it. Do you really feel this way about GDNZ ?
I want to sing about how awesome this country is, not about asking for gods help.
Pokarekareana for our offical anthem? this is a great peice of music but i dont know what i'm singing (my fault for being ignorant) and not many of us have the talent to do this song justice.

dickhead mode disengaged
right. As I suspected, it's a lovesong, set near a lake. Found a translation:
Rippling are
the waters of (Waiapu/Akarana/Rotorua/whatever),
cross over girl
'tis calm.
(chorus)
Oh girl
return here (to me),
For I shall die
because of love (for you).
I have written my letter
I have sent my ring,
So that your people can see
(that I am) troubled.
(chorus)
My pen is shattered,
I have no more paper,
(But) my love
is still steadfast.
(chorus)
(My) love will never
be dried by the sun,
It will be forever moistened
by my tears.
(chorus)

I like our flag, but i prefer the version that keeps the southern cross section and replaces the union jack with a black background with a silver fern. for me this represents NZ better. and i feel somewhat relates to what said by Lucifer_Sam above . . .

The union jack means nothing to me. but the southern cross & sliver fern make my chest swell with pride.

i just like a single colour background... I don't mind the union jack, but I do like the idea of a silverfern

My preferance for a Flag would be:
Keep the Southern Cross but we have to replace the Union Jack and possibly add a little green black and white to the Flag with either a fern or a Maori art design and around it have the Southern Cross. As i have mentioned in this post and in several others, It is inconceivable and pointless to Have a head of state who lives 12,000 miles from New Zealand, Its 2004 and we are no longer a colony of Britain.
Also the flag debate has been mentioned before
