Squeeze - HLAH Exposed

This week Squeeze is in Wellington with ex-Head Like A Hole frontman Nigel 'Booga' Beazley. Nigel talks candidly about the demise of one of the country's most legendary groups and life since the split. We also catch him performing with his new alt-country outfit Grand Lodge...

You really really really don't wanna miss this one.

Squeeze - TV2
11pm Wednesday and again 2.15pm Sunday

Just out of interest, has anyone caught Grand Lodge live? Your thoughts?

Forums: NZ Music,

Incidentally, it's Booga's first television interview since HLAH split over four years ago...

//You really really really don't wanna miss this one.

damm straight - thanks miss y

Any links to Grand Lodge?

Grand Lodge are fantastic but rather elusive as far as the web goes. I get my info from the slow boat man who plays guitar for 'em...

I have seen them a few times - they go off!! Booga has the perfect combination of charm and winsomeness, excellent stage presence, gets the girls going an' all. Mix of originals and covers; at first the countri-ness of it all freaked me out but I soon got into it and now can't miss a Grand Lodge performance! Favourite song: 'yer as cold as an iceberg' plus any man-in-black covers

Don't miss!!

Hiddie Beast does our sound a lot, so i know what he's up to. I do miss Head like a Hole - they should get together solely to kick the NZ music industry in the ass for being such watered down pussy shite.

Agreed. Nothing beats old Head Like A Hole. Not even Pacifier...
tee hee

Did anyone see the show? Your thoughts?

I saw parts of it (hey, it's on opposite 'Angel') and I was stoked to see the Hootenanny video with footage of their Bands in the Square gig where people actually got up and danced, and also I liked the Grand Lodge song. Also I was curious as to whether that was Booga's real house and how he afforded it.

I thought he lived with his mum?

Ahhhhhh. Well that would explain it. Not that there's anything wrong with living with your parents.

sorry miss y - i really really really did miss it.. too busy -no real time for tv ...is there a repeat on?

//I saw parts of it
repeats on Sunday 2.00pm

// it's on opposite 'Angel'

Joanna: WHAT CHANNEL IS ANGEL ON??? (forgive the caps, this is important stuff!!)

TV3, 11.15pm, Wednesday nights. We're about 16 episodes into series four, and it's SO GOOD. Like, Angel was never as good as Buffy, but this season pretty much is, with its crazy plot twists and turns. The bad guy was so scary he gave me nightmares.

It was shocking seeing old HLAH footage of him with his long flowing locks and hot body contrasted with the Booga of today, all bloated and depressed.

He seemed to be almost crushed by years of regret, but he's moving on and his new stuff doesn't suck. Good on him.

harsh assessment, Robyn! but I can't really comment since i haven't seen it yet. 11:15 is too late for me... will try and catch it on Sunday.

Thanks Joanna - must learn how to set video... an old flatmate who worked at a video store used to bring me Angel videos. they were great. i actually prefer it to buffy, but then i've never really given her the chance I guess.

Okay second thoughts: not harsh exactly, i was attempting to express regret. he was hot for sure.
I guess bad habits lead to badness etc

He used to be oh-so-very hot, in a sleazy "why do I find him hot?" kinda way, ala Nick Cave.

// oh-so-very hot, in a sleazy "why do I find him hot?"

like a million undeserving boys

The Show would have been so much better if half of it had of been devoted to Marty Squire. He got a habit, fucked up his band, went on the methadone and got fat, and then got a new band too. He also looks uncannily like a cross between the Fat Elvis and Beau Bridges, just like Bogie.

As a sidenote, why is it that ex-junkies always talk in a nasily whine, I know an ex-junkie who reckons it's from subjugating yourself to everyone for junk.

Also I thought it was a bit cruel to leave in the bit with the half finished car, and the line about going back to school-it just adds to the tragedy of it all.

Anyone know where I can score a Misty?

very depressing, yet quietly amusing.

good job!

he was very self-aware and very honest. seemed to have thought about things he did ... makes me wonder about the relative (non?) self-awareness of other 'washed-up' (not that Booga really is, it's just that he knows he's been through some sort of ringer) musicians (ie Keif Richards) ...

that's a rather ambitious parallel between booga and keith richards.
As much as I believe Booga's contribution to popular culture is massive and enduring, I still think the ringer that Keith's been thru is a different paradigm completely. Lots of people make assumptions about him, few of them seem to be true. Yeah, he's been through the whole gamut and then some, and most presume he's simply too wasted or rung-thru to know it... I wouldnt be so sure. Hell, would love to know your thoughts on that other martyr to local rock Marty Squire

Marty is so much more gormless than Booga, at least Booga allowed himself to have some real success before he got a habit, Marty couldn't even hold out till the first record was released.

Incidentally, there is a French cultural theorist, whose name escapes me, who writes about the exchange of capital in culture. He has a great theory of Cultural Capital that works really well with music. He says there are two types of Capital, Embodied and Objectified. A musician with embodied cultural capital is one who has learned his craft. This is something that involves a large investment of time, and the rewards take time to eventualize. Objectified cultural capital on the other hand is a more immediate thing that only requires investment in items of cultural worth such as, say, A Vox Ac30, a gretch guitar, a leather jacket, a greasy haircut. These things make you a rock star in a very visual way.
I know that ultimately you need a bit of both to have full Cultural Capital, because the public are very easily swayed by the visual side of things. But Marty is one who hangs too far to the side of Objectification, rather than embodiment. Or to cut to the chase, he’s a talentless old junky dressed up as a rock star.

Wow, you really sound like you've got some kind of bitter axe to grind. What's up with that?

//But Marty is one who hangs too far to the side of Objectification, rather than embodiment. Or to cut to the chase, he’s a talentless old junky dressed up as a rock star

Thats pretty wack spak. I mean I really rate Marty - especially the D-Super album, and recent Accellerants live shows I've seen. You've got your opinion and thats fine, I just can't for the life of me see any basis for it. IMHO you're reaching.

Admittedly I didn't see the TV show that I assume connects Marty and HLAH here...?

Most really talented people have drugs and/or depression issues - Both Booga and Marty have real fuckin talent - whether or not they have been able to manage it succesfully is a different issue but personally I think that having a spineless and anonymous dig at them is just low.

Just for the record, no the show didn't connect Marty and HLAH at all. We never set out to do an 'expose' - that's not the type of show we make - Booga just totally opened up about all that stuff. We figured if he was happy to talk about it on camera, we were happy to air it. As for Marty, it would've been a bit out of place to include him in the show, because it wasn't supposed to be all about drugs - it was about Booga, his experiences, and what lies ahead for him.

Yeah sorry Jane, didn't mean to imply that the show made the connection - just wasn't sure if it did or not, as I missed it. Bugger.

//Incidentally, there is a French cultural theorist, whose name escapes me, who writes about the exchange of capital in culture

As an aside: are you thinking of De Certeau? Foucoult?

No worries Dust, I was just trying to clear any confusion seeing as there was a bit of talk about Marty but he wasn't part of the show. I also wanted to explain to our nameless friend why we didn't include Marty in the show as he had suggested.

Ahhhh yes. Thankyou.

Caught it yesterday - finally managed to find a friendly tv screen in Wanganui of all places (it's a good place to leave.)

Great show, good interview, nice clips. Well done Jane. Only wish I'd taped it so I could watch it again.

ya - managed to catch most of it on the weekend too. - nice work miss y - yes .. very depressing..

i did think however - that in a few cases you guys may have been a bit heavy with story telling in the edit suite... and a bit light on the truth side.. like 60 minutes.. .. when iv's ramp down into slo motion for emotional effect i become very uneasy - and distrustful (not sure why you needed to make booga look more pathetic) .. otherwise - very entertaining and intersting - you guys do nice work

It's only the extremely rare occasion such as this that I wish I had TV.

dont suppose it's screening again sometime soon?

I always miss shit
