hey these guys were first to play on the national anthem. i no they just won the rock quest. does anyone else no anything bout them? what did u guys think of them?
yeh.. i like these guys too.. at first they were reminding me of the strokes.. but the vocalist was crazy and the guitarists were moving so i saw the difference =p mad props to these guys aye.. theyre really something to enjoy..
yeah i just relised that they haven't even announced a winner yeah they reminded me of the strokes too yeah it said they were still in high school i just would like to hear of more music from them
well auckland hasn't and nationals havent started either and thats when they announce the winner, the checks havent entered this year. i dont think so anyway
just because rockquest hasn't started in auckland, doesn't mean it hasn't started elsewhere (sorta proves the theory about aucklanders not thinking about anything south of the bombay hills....).
and recent winners of rockquest haven't even been from auckland... 2000 - Evermore from Feilding (represent!!!), 2001 - Carriage H from Dunedin, 2002 - The Have from Wanganui and 2003 - Falter from ChCh. ok so its a bit off topic, but i just feel like proving a point.
you musta been on some pretty awesome drugs to have heard that? and can you please take note of what i said befor, click the "reply to post" button instead of starting a new comment.
Actually Teffa they did introduce them as the winners of last years rockquest, incorectly so. This is not the first time that mistake has been made, I read an article on them in pavement saying the same thing. Common misconception about the checks.
well spank my ass and call me charlie! i bet they told the producers that just to get a good name for themselfs, hey i heard that you go to dio.. what form are you?
I watched The Checks at last years rockquest on (T.V), they didn't win anything!
They should of at least been runner-ups.
I'm not to sure about the vocalist, bad singing. They're still at school so that probably explains why they don't have an album ,yet.
i think the vocalist is awesome, it all works really well together, they 'look' like the strokes but i reakon they are way more raw, which isn't a bad thing.
it was qute funny, after their set they were hanging around the back door and about 3 groupie skanks were flirting like hell wearing nothing but peices of material round their asses called "skirts".. to think i was once likt them..
mmm one of those girls looked so keen for eddy aye.. oh yeah and sven, callum, korel and jacob as well.. like all night she was hard followin them.. hehe maybe i'm just jealous.. o
The Checks took out the North Shore Rockquest Regionals last year, and also won Best Original Song, that's why Pavement magazine printed that they won the Rockquest, I think if you reread it it makes sense but is a tad misleading I agree. After last years finals and even before the final night they had decided not to enter Rockquest this year and a very good call because they are doing incredibly well without that stigma. Unfortunately for the Rockquest organisers who told The Checks on the night of the final last year that they final this year was gona be on the North Shore again, ( quite dodgy really, obviously planning on The Checks entering again and pulling the HUGE crowd like they did this yr and most probably planning on having The Checks win) they decided they didn't want to do it again. Last yrs results were ridiculous (as in the fact that The Checks won nothing) and The Checks are definitely bigger than Rockquest.
hey soph how it be?
yeah i agree aye theyd of been dumb to enter again aye.. fuck its poo when you go back a third time and do worse then the previous year, not that they would but yeah theyd be silly too they dun need rockquest they doin real good without it. as for pete and glen saying that to them i reckon its pretty rude aye haha i'll laugh if they end up having loads of wellington bands and end up paying shitloads in accomodation and airfares for all the bands hehe.. well really i wont cos they good guys but yeah.. i'll shut up now. by the way jacob if you read this nice drumming on saturday man
Anjelus is right about the Pavement magazine article. If you skim throught the text fast it is easy to think they said The Checks won the rockquest.
There is a Checks frorum in the Artists section in existance already. Please feel free to use your nearist exit and point your mouse straight for http://www.nzmusic.com/topic.cfm?i=7250&show=latest to hear more about The Checks.
The checks are boring & forced. nice to see high school age bands branching out from standard genres, but personally i dont find anything particularly impressive - theyve just listened to a lot of their dads lps. last years rockquest was rightfully won by falter, & the group with the wide array of instruments shud gain more recognition than the checks.
You're only right in one instance: Falter rightfully one because the rockquest isn't a competition for good music, simply for producing the same shit. Think of The Have, they're boring and forced.
The Checks aren't boring or forced. I'm getting sick of people lumping bands that start with 'the' together. They don't sound anythign like The Datsuns. Or The Mint Chicks. Or any other NZ bands which people like to compare. At least they're listening to their Dad's LPs, referring back to the real origins, instead of creating some crap which is about as exciting as the content of their video, going down a pissy hydroslide.
I thought Falter showed some good things on that Anthem thingymejigglytelethon. In a mainstream rockm pop kind of way. Like to see them steadily progress without the hype actually.
*sarchasm* But Bestbit, definitive article bands alll sound the saaame *sarchasm*.
Bands should play what they enjoy. If you enjoy pop, play pop. You enjoy the sound of rock, play rock. You enjoy the sound of pop corn play a pop corn shaker.
