There were a lot of younger fans there, and the general atmosphere was more "enthusiastic but confused" crappish crowd rather than the usual Auckland "appreciative but apathetic" ubercrap crowd. The result was pretty much identical though - The place was pretty packed for a local band playing on a Monday night, there were a couple of people getting into it right at the front, vague head-nodding from the rest, then enthusiastic clapping/cheering for *precisely* eight seconds at the end of each number, followed by a second of vaguely muddled silence waiting for someone on stage to do something else.
...as for the show, the band seemed to be on autopilot for the first half of the set, and the atmosphere wasn't helped much by the tired crowd. However, somewhere toward the halfway mark they perked up a lot, and (finally) started playing like they were enjoying it. That said, it's most apparent on a night that they seem a trifle jaded, that it's pretty much impossible for them to do a shoddy show. I think the best thing they ever did for their career was stick together in the original lineup - the experience playing together counts for so much.
I'd also like to say how happy I am that they changed their setlist from the last time they were here (different order, and a different choice of older songs) - some bands don't bother, but just a few little changes make it feel like you're witnessing something new and exciting.
I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more were it not for the gig at the Bollix a couple of months back. That was magic - the band were in the best form I've ever seen them, the crowd were jumping around like maniacs, the sound was amazing, blah blah blah blah blah why didn't I write about that at the time? It was one of the best gigs I've ever ever been to, so the bar's been set pretty bloody high.
