it was always about nostalgia and losing youth to me. seems to be about summers long ago, before responsibility came along. and losing friends you knew when you were 16. didn't think it was much about danglers floating in the water.

I know Nightswimming was about skinny dipping, but I don't think it is necessarily a "gay" song - there may have been girls with Mike and co! Then again, there weren't any chicks in the video...

I too have thought it;s a song about nostalgia and yearning for innocent times. It is one of my favourite songs, and one of Stipes's best lyrics. Then again, Automatic For The People is my favourite album of the 1990s.

What's funny is that I Want To Break Free was written by the band's bassist, John Deacon - who is not gay. Some of the most sexually ambiguous Queen songs were written by Freddie, especially early in the band's career, and on their brilliant second album Queen II - sample lyric: "Put me in the cellar with the naughty boys".
