te reo maori in music

Appropriately for NZ Music Month, I was thinking about the Maori language in NZ Music, and about why we haven't had a number one in te reo since Poi E.
It's not like there is any shortage of musicians singing in the language, so why hasn't it gone mainstream since Patea Maori Club?
Any theories on why we don't embrace it? Or do we just not hear enough of it?

Forums: NZ Music,

I'd prob say discreet racism from programme directors and the like.

I remember a few years ago an interview with Southside of Bombay, about their song "Whats the time Mr Wolf". They had tried for years to get the song on radio as a single, but where continually knocked back because of the te reo in the song. Basically radio where forced to play it because of a 'grassroots' desire for the song, rather than because they really wanted to.

Id chance that the grass roots was the reason that Poi E was such a big hit too.

Much more likely that the tie in with Once Were Warriors was the reason it got played on the radio in the end. IN my opinion it was a pretty crappy song anyway and hardly qualifies in terms of te reo if I remember it rightly

Poi E was a hit because it was a good commercial song. Catchy tune, a bit of a hook and performed with passion and professionalism.

And it is a shame that there is not more material featuring te reo on the airwaves ... but like it or not any material needs to have commercial appeal if it is to feature on mainstream radio/TV.

Syu - what about stuff like Upper Hutt Posses' te reo mixes? Or Nat Rose's r'n'b styles - surely they have commercial appeal?

Stu - what about stuff like Upper Hutt Posses' te reo mixes? Or Nat Rose's r'n'b styles - surely they have commercial appeal?

i am racist but i do enjoy a good song
not really to bothered if its in a language i dont understand
just as long as its good like that latest katchafire one that is so good

The band Aria(sp?) was created for that very reason.

Where are they now? If you can find out why they fell apart when clearly they were suppose to created te reo music for the masses, then you have your answer.

I liked how in their video clip they were rollin in a flash BMW or something.

can't maoris drive flash cars man?

You know, you gotta love all the music

Maori, Samoan, whatever really. I think that Te Reo music has started and its going wuite good. Ive heard quite a few songs in Te Reo which is really good. Ka Mau Te Wehi!!!

Peace out

what happened to oceania?
last i remember of her she was on holmes because she only sung the national anthem in te reo!

Geez I remember the uproar over that ... I thought it was great - I'm sure there's been plenty of times over the years the Maori version hasn't been sung, so fair enough giving the english one a break now and then. Plus the Maori one sounds better - lyrics are more flowing ...

I think it's reflective of much of mainstream NZ not speaking Maori.

As an official language of the country, theoretically it should be able to be used in whole sentances on TV without the need to repeat the meaning in English.

I'm going to try and teach my daughter some basic Maori, hopefully it'll be something they give her a grounding in at primary school.

I'd be pretty keen to hear 'Oma Rappity' hit the airwaves.... oma oma oma bang bang bang goes the farmers gun etc... dope
