NZ rock n roll poets?

Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Nick Cave... etc

Who are the NZ equivalents? Past and present who take the writing of lyrics to a whole new level of artistry?

I think this topic has been done before, but Chris Matthews is where it's at for lyrics I reckon.

Warren Maxwell. The song "Passion" from the True album led me to give up the job I hated to pursue the career I wanted. In fact most of the tracks from that album inspired me.

That's a great song

Andrew Spittle (Dating Godot), Jeremy Taylor (Cinematic/Throw), David Kilgour, Brian Crook (Renderers).

Andrew Spittle in particular fills a lot of the requirements for prolific genius drunken poet musician.

Andrew Spittle (Dating Godot)

Although I've heard only a some of his songs and though not all of them are, well, "export quality", Spittle definitely has a flair for lyrics. If you have Bridle Songs, listen to Crystal Palace and Stella Of County Clair - so beautiful.

Glen Campbell (solid gold hell): sugar sugar sugar... baaag.

genious.

um... "genius" genius.

warner emery

I saw some great poets in the traditional form, and musicians perform with jim christy at creation earlier this week... among the great artists were lindon puffin and jody lloyd.

ok, i'll bite: Chris Knox.

he'd prolly hate being called a poet (despite referring to himself as a 'minstel type' in lyric form..), but his flow of dialogue approach to songs is just remarkable.

I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to mention this fuck knuckle

bob cardy/brannigan

pick up your broken body
lay it out in the sun
1/2 of the food in your fridge is crawling
the other 1/2 is feeding its young

- got to be strong- bob cardy

i woke up this morning with lockjaw
on account I was ordering drinks in my sleep
time it took me to get outta my bed
musta been an evolutionary leap

same - same

"Using the kind of down-and-dirty insights that a beat poet might conjure up, dragstrip were brash and to the point" Chris (fraew) Andrews in a low hum.

Don't kid yourself man, its only Low Hum, they dig ANYTHING jangly or rocky or PURE crap.

Fuck off and die, you snot-eating dweeb. I am under no false allusions about anything. You are, and forever shall be, a moron.

Go wash your potty mouth. I challenge you to say one nice thing.
Or if you can't I suggest you try to say something that is both vile andclever. Rather than just puerile.

Heh, that was unfair of me. That was a dig at A Low Hum, not at your band which I've never heard.
