im tired of samey-sounding NZ elec-dub/funk bands

video kid was the last straw

down with the video kid

Haha I've avoided that video kid shit like the plague.

What else sounds like Video Kid? I haven't heard the album.

shit like flash harry, fat freddies ... in a broader sense the black seeds, katchafire et al

Some of the stuff I've heard is rather dreary dub-with REALLY poor lyrics, and the rest is 80's influenced-trying to sing like a robot stuff. He doesn't seem to try very hard in the lyrics department, I think he's spent too much time writing for comedy- y'know, obvious rhymes.

this is not the greatest song in the whirl-hirld
this is just the tribute

Hmmm, crap sounds like Video Kid, ever heard that shit?

So like a cross between Bette Middler, Nickelback and the Venga Boyz?

Sounds intriguing.

// like a cross between Bette Middler, Nickelback and the Venga Boyz

I am going to have nightmares tonight.

wow, thanks for sharing that thought. did it give you a headache?
don't listen to it if you don't like it, it's not as if that stuff is getting shoved down anyone's throat is it?

dieing soon ALLELUYIAH

I suggest you don't live in Wellington then.
I love that "shit". You're the first person I've ever come across who doesn't like fat freddy's drop

The times I have seen Fat Freddys Drop I enjoyed them, but I was pretty high, so I can't be too sure of my judgement. However following them and Trinity Roots, that sound has spread and has resulted in the bastardised shitty Video Kid. Video Kid is the sort of thing reviewers for the Listener and Dominion Post hail. And thats not a good thing.

If I don't like it I shouldn't listen to it? And its not being shoved down my throat? That may be. But I would rather bitch about it. Before long everyone would be doing this sort of thing, especially those that ride the latest trend (if that isn't allready happening?) and if that happened I would kill myself. Self-preservation.

"Video Kid is the sort of thing reviewers for the Listener and Dominion Post hail."
i thought those reviews were pretty low-key actually...?

haven't read the dom one yet, but Nick Bollinger's listener review was pretty non-committal, which, from him, amounts to scathing criticism. See if you can find any hint of whether or not he thinks it's good or bad from this...

"Video Kid comes from another of the loosely overlapping musical circles that produced the Labcoats. Under his real name of Bret McKenzie, he plays keyboards for Wellington reggae aggregation the Black Seeds and is half of folk parody duo Flight of the Conchords. He also has a sideline as the subject of a minor international cult for his brief appearance as a Lord of the Rings elf.

As Video Kid, he recalls some of these identities, as well as creating a whole lot more. His first solo album includes Black Seeds-style skanking ("Running", co-written with fellow Seed Barnaby Weir) and Conchords-ish satire (the self-introductory "Video Kid", in which McKenzie, sounding as wistful and unworldly as a mid-60s Donovan, vows to "free the corporate booty slaves".)

He also makes several forays into retro-disco, chiefly as an excuse for the squelching early 80s synthesiser sounds that are overused to comic effect on "DJZ Girlfriend" and "CCTV".

The synths are still rampant on "Crime Scene", but there's a darker, more writerly tone that emerges in both a melody and lyric that recall the dramatic narratives of the Front Lawn.

Which of these personae is the real Video Kid? Like Beck or the Japanese postmodern popster Cornelius, he's equally comfortable with all of them. It's like channel surfing, and finding Bret McKenzie doing something different on every one."

// haven't read the dom one yet

gah! what am I talking about - I archived the damned thing. And yes, it is fairly glowing [4/5]. Tom Cardy does tend to wax effusive to be about any local efforts, which is probably true of most reviewers writing about releases by artists they're likely to bump into down at the pub.

re: Bolinger's review - actually I dont see anything too scathing in this review, it's fairly constructive.

The thing I've noticed with most reviews I read about Video Kid is they waste too many words on telling the reader about Brent McKenzie's Lord of the Rings part or his comedy act or Black Seeds background etc... I think they should take Video Kid as a new entity, perhaps mentioning who he is briefly, and then on to the music for a change, or is the lack of interest in that department the reason why they waffle on about his celebrity so much, becoz that's pretty pathetic if it is.
but anyway, what's the album like noizy?

aha! can't say I've heard it. still waiting for my freebie...

Re: libra's comments, most reviewers are running off the press sheet they've been given, just picking out the info they care to mention. From a label perspective, trying to establish a pedigree for an otherwise unheard of artist is a pretty common approach.

Which is not to say a review that focused much more on the music wouldn't be a good thing, but I think given how reviews come about it's pretty understandable.

Urgh, my jeans took too long to dry. Love that smell.

I'm sensing a lot of negativity comming from you. Why do you think that is?

blame the media. i live in wellington and all those acts you mentioned are good good friends of mine (don't tell anyone but i actually put some of them out on a label occasionally) ... but over-exposure is over-exposure if you're not into something... and i agree that the Video Kid LP is... an 'aquired' taste shall we say.
i understand where you're coming from Mr Lame, but basically you're fucked 'cos Trinity have a new LP out in a few weeks and the Fat Fred's are back from Europe and the US with a load of new material and remixes at about the same time.
you'd best dig a hole now ;-)
peace.

//Trinity have a new LP out in a few weeks
Very exciting. Does anyone know if there's any truth to the rumour they're going to play the town hall?

We've been teased for ever so long with a release date for the Fat Freddie's album... April, May??? when is it going to drop.....pardon the bad pun

and.. and... nearly....uh.....and...

dead.

//We've been teased for ever so long . . .

The problem is that they all have many fingers in many pies

Not a problem for the music, but for us left drooling & waiting for more

//We've been teased for ever so long with a release date for the Fat Freddie's album... April, May??? when is it going to drop.....pardon the bad pun
I thought it was going to be out in Summer

Haha, I don't mind those two bands. I have all the Trinity releases so far. If they keep doing their thing then fine, but if shitty second rate hacks start springing up everywhere....Doesn't matter if those reviews were low key or not (?) the fact is, it was reviewed in the Listener. I never mentioned over-exposure in the media anywhere? They can get as much coverage as they like.

Koe - Hmmm maybe you sense all that negativity becuase I'm saying negative things about this music? Why do I think you are sensing the negativity? How the fuck am I spose to know why you are sensing it? Its not like you could miss it, so its not that big a mystery. Maybe you should look inside yourself.

A good band is a good band regardless of genre, personally I love Trinity Roots yet find Fat Freddys incredibly boring. Capitol Recordings, you seem to be in the know - Were they taking the piss in the video for dawn skate 88? At first I thought they must be but by the end of it I wasnt quite sure...

that won the final (very final) round of the jim beam video competition M2 ran.
the idea was the video kid's and i think james anderson (ex of space tv) directed it.
all i remember about it is being fucking amazed that they got such good weather for the only day they had slated for shooting in welli in the middle of may or june... y'gotta admit, welli looks awesome in that video...

yes it does look awesome, I love Wellington lived here for 7 years or so, I was referring to all the slow mos of them skating, if they are joking it is funny, but if they aint they look like cocksuckers, a little too far up their own arses, considering what an average band the black seeds are. love that track turn it around tho, I still cant beleive they wrote it......lol just joking

oh. that. no idea, sorry. i don't think they were taking the piss... i could be wrong though ;-)
i went thru my skateboarding phase in summer 1977/78 so you're asking the wrong old scrotebag...
'turn it around' is a fucking top tune though, i must agree there... the video needed another week's work but that's another thread right there i think.

YES finally someone has said it
'Video kid is a load of SPAM!' I hope he never makes another horrible song or album
yucky muck! I spit you out!
but I love trinity roots and fat freddies, video kid has nothing on these guys

Someone has to tell salmonella dub to try something new or just shut up.
when i first heard them (drunken Monkey) i thought they were quite cool, but now after hearing every other album they have made they bore the hell outta me IT'S THE EXACT SAME ALBUM made over and over and over and over again

also seen them live a few times ITS THE EXACT SAME CONCERT over and over and over and over again

can't fault them for consistancy

Going to a Salmonella Dub concert is like going to a Grateful Dead concert: if you can remember it, it means you weren't really into the spirit of it.

//IT'S THE EXACT SAME ALBUM made over and over and over and over again

wow - you are a strange fellow ... i would say that they are worlds apart from drunken monkey times now... im not into the new stuff... but old drunken monkey sits on my top shelf
