NZ Electronica

what are your feelings on NZ electronica at the moment.

Forums: NZ Music,

I feel all warm inside.

Electronica is hard to define...

Stuff like ShapeShifter, Baitercell and Schumacher, Concord Dawn, Minuit etc etc... they're all kicking arse.

Then you got Conray, Sola Rosa, FFD... which I guess are electronica too.

I'd say we're doing pretty bloody good.

Agreed, really enjoying Rhian Sheehan at the mo.

Yeah, electronica is sufficiently hard to define that it's not really worth thinking about. Um, defining it, I mean. As a term I think it is useful as a quick way to say "not rock and not pop" when talking about popular music.

I listen to maybe 1 in 10 NZ electronica artists, really like a handful at most. That's not giving shit to what's happening in NZ though, I think that proportion's pretty consistent with other places round the world. Well, maybe other Western countries.

One thing I think is notable is the amount of great music being produced and not made public. Some of the most talented producers I've heard suffer from either never being satisfied something is finished or good enough to play out. *sigh* Good argument for not working alone, I guess.

// Yeah, electronica is sufficiently hard to define that it's not really worth thinking about

think about it later, huh jet

if someone can direct me to some really outstanding NZ electronica i would appreciate it, seriously im losing hope. an outfit that can front up to squarepusher or the books or mum or even any old stuff on ninja tune.

check out phelps & munro

Well, I guess the point I was trying to make above is that the chances of finding something in that league in NZ is pretty slim, due to the tiny number of practitioners.

But yeah, for Squarepusher-ish stuff that Phelps & Munro album is worth a spin and like the artists you mention he's seriously got his own voice, IMO. Which is certainly something to commend, whether you like it or not. It's also nothing to do with dub, which is a bold move for an NZ electronic release! Heh.

If you're willing to go further out into beatless gurgly land (and The Books are heading that way) maybe look into Andrew Thomas's album on German label Kompakt. I reckon it's a major coup for an NZ act with basically zero audience to show up on such a prestigious label.

Have you tried the Signer album 'Low Light Dreams' on US label Carpark? It's not particularly my thing, but again, it's worth investigating.

How about Rosy Parlane's releases, any of those guys ex-Thela? His two track release with Fennesz is awesome, and the latest on Touch is probably going to be worth checking out if his other two albums are anything to go by.

I don't know where you'd find most of this stuff in NZ.

When I think of old Ninja Tune, I think of slow breaks, and then think of Sola Rosa. Up your alley?

woah thanks jet i'll check those out.

In fact, do you know about Wellington label Involve Records?

I admit this includes releases by me, but I can say with confidence that most everyone involved in that label is a fan of at least some of the artists you're talking about.

Sorry if I'm going overboard, it's a frickin' joy for me to see someone mention acts I love but assume no one else knows about like The Books or Mùm.

yeah tell me about it :sheds single tear of joy:

now imagine being working class maori boy and enjoying that kind of music ... its hard i tell ya

if u can link me to some more info on that wellington label, that would be cool. youve restored my hope jet

woops didnt spot the url there, i'm on it

uh, I'd like to think I was doing something a little different.. more uh, synthpoppy and silly than glitchy, but still a little bit so. Check out Portasound or MULE for my glitchier stuff.

hey d watch the 'uh's, you're starting to sound like lena o... ;)

i think a lots of kiwitronica (particularly the successful stuff) focuses on making music with nice melodies and vibe and such, as opposed to Squarepusher/Aphex Twin/Autechre sort of stuff , where they just seem to be producing crap that may be clever to produce, but is often a bit too pretentious to be worth listening to...there's a place for that, but i get the feeling its not a path many kiwi producers really feel like taking at the moment. . . but i dunno. . .there's plenty of wicked stuff coming out of new zealand right now, as people mentioned above. . . there's also quite heavy electronic influence in many kiwi rock, dub etc acts

haha jess - these are "uh"s of indecisiveness, not "uh"s of sassiness. (but what fine sass it is)

When is WYWS?

June 5 at Happy.....you prob already spotted this link:

Apparently the While You Were Sleeping people are putting out a compilation of Wellington artists associated with their event. They lean toward fairly left-of-field stuff, so it might contain some decent tracks that are an alternative to the usual 'easy to swallow' kiwi-tronica.

I suspect it will only be available at the WYWS shows however.....

thanks yes p&m is a class act out of a horde of chumps

Isn't that phelps and munro like Mouse On Mars? I've never heard it.

Yeah, I guess that is quite a good point of comparison, at least more recent Mouse on Mars. MoM are much more chaotic and dirty sounding, though, I reckon. And there's none of the sudden Beach Boys moments!?

Atleast there isn't much of that awful NZ produced house around at the moment. House of Downtown....uggghh...That shit makes any NZ produced electronica sound good by comparisson.

Do you mean like that SunValley Sound Vol 2 thats just been released, or do you mean like that Greg Churchil track that was @# 25 in the UK's BBC dance charts (last time I checked.)

i think house overdid the meth and is having 'quiet time' in Hamner Springs.
:-)
Sun Valley vol.2 is good though. as is the Involve compilation we put out a while back (obviously).

They closed Hamner Springs.
House is probably lying derolict under a bridge somewhere.

No, House is squatting in the derelict buildings in Hanmer I think.
