the doco the other night was quite cool. it aired late around 10pm on channel 2. sunday night.
an explanation from all involved about all facets of the dunner label was awsome to see, and not hard to commiserate with either.
all those old heads having a go.
it's inevitable really.
it was great to see the label grow up fast with the turn of the nineties too. especially with those 80's bands who think sumptuous videos mean wearing a brown suit in the nz summer sun.
they definately had sensibilities tho'.
as it was proved later on.
well done oh maker of homegrown music documentries.
i can't wait for the wildside one.

What I loved about the documentary was that it wasn't all sweetness and light - I mean they seriously slagged each other off quite a bit. I guess I always had this rosy coloured view of Flying Nun that everyone wanted the same things and all, so it was really interesting to see that wasn't the case. It was also choice to hear that Andrew Brough made enough money to pay off his house thanks to Bike being used in H&A and Neighbours so often. There's hope yet!

it was a wee bit sad too when the chills drummer Martyn Bull slowly died of leukemia.
that wasn't nice at all.
i love my leather jacket made a whole lot of sense. (a gift to mr phillips left in his will).
i'm too young to know this stuff, even tho the records were all around the house.
i consider myself an 'outer space' laddd.

And I think this post of yours provides as good a reason as any for this doco to be repeated regulalry, although perhaps not every year. Newcomers won't know the history, and the doco is an accessible way of getting some idea of what has gone before.

was that the same doco as was on a few years back? with simon sitting in a dark office type room for his bits. and various d4s, deupas, downes', phillips' etc speaking? and the wonderful mr colbert?

yeah, it's the same doco TV2 have trotted out three year's running now, in the exact same timeslot no less... Groundhog Day!
it's still one of the best nz music documentaries ever made IMHO, props to Satellite and Hugh Sundae, and a great insight in how to/not to "run" a label.
it should really get a fully DVD release...

i got a lot of fn stuff- but i gotta say- very little of it stands up to further listening- the cleans 1st singles & eps- the chills 1st singles- snappers 1st ep- & a handful of songs here & there by various fn artists- whats going on- randolph &c
always found it curious how- if it was on fn- people would disengage their bullshit meter- i mean- ¿the headless chickens?

perhaps you're judging the band by the band and not by the songs. some songs that i just love: gaskrankinstation (sure, novelty, but great menace), million $ dream, cipher, magnet, fire (i like that only a bit, but it makes it onto the list), smoking big red, black water rising, escalator (oh yeah, there's the money shot), day of the locust ... as much as i like these songs, there is always the "ah shit" of turning a brilliant song like 'Stalker' from Chris's days in This Kind of Punishment into ... 'Mister Moon'. ah, shit. what the ...

One bonus from seeing this doco again ...
One bonus from seeing this doco again after moving to Dunedin was that it helped me put a name to a face: I've seen this woman around for a while who I knew was connected to the music scene, is in fact in a current band, but I saw her in the doco and now know she's Lesley Paris, drummer from Look Blue Go Purple.

What is everyone’s opinion on the Chris Knox/Mathew Bannister spat.
Is Mathew Bannister a whiner?
Or is he spot on the money-and Chris Knox is actually an obnoxious w***er?

re the Banister/Knox thing - perhaps a personality clash, partly because Knox (probably be the first to acknowledge this himself) was obnoxious and went around 'authoritatively' saying "You should play; you are great" and "You shouldn't ever play; you are crap" to bands, but sometimes this 'shouldn't' angle did actually work by making people incredibly angry and want to prove him wrong. but there are other ways doing that - constructive feedback ...
two trains, leaving at different times from different cities, one objectivity, the other subjectivity ... people get squashed inbetween the crash.

chris & matthew are who they are- they both have strong opinions- chris was totally for diy- matthew wasnt so into the punk ethos- he wanted abbey rd- with its neumanns & neves- matthew was younger & shy- & retiring- chris was older- & more forceful- chris got his way on the dunedin double
ironically- chriss argument is that you lose control in proper studios- to engineers & producers- matthew felt that he experienced what chris wanted to avoid at all costs- at the hands of chris & doug
i guess tho- matthew should have understood that the choice was
1- record for flying nun
2- possibly never record at all
sneakys chose option 1- they knew there was no budget for recording- the set up was chris & doug & the 4-track revox- not abbey rd- if ya cant be with the 1 you love- love the 1 youre with
