I'm trying to organise a few gigs for a number of established christchurch bands, for venues like the media club, creation, the dux de lux, wunderbar, harbour light etc. We need some new blood in the christchurch live scene, so if you've got a band, and you think you'd be keen on an opening slot - a foot in the door - please reply / give me an email at fraew@thebigcity.co.nz

Damn, I wish someone would put up a similar post for new auckland indie bands.

whats the booking situation like up there?, we've currently got a reverse venue problem. there are plenty of venues that occassionally have good gigs on (the ones mentioned), but the dux is the only 3+ nights a week venue, and you have to book 3 months in advance to play there! theres quite a few bands around, but we'd really benefit from having a regular alternative to the dux (my pick is on the media club), like the provincial was back in the late 90s..

we've got the dux problem with the kings arms, ie a massive waiting list, it's even really hard to get a monday or wednesday gig nowadays, which is what my band is after. paradise has just closed thanks to the wonderful fun loving council, and edens bar needs a decent PA.
basically we have the same problem, we need another dedicated music venue in the central city area. preferably one that fits around 200 people with access to a decent PA.

most of our alternatives are fairly small - the media club side room is just 80 people, the wunderbar (over in lyttleton) is the same. i've been booking the odd gig (usually long quality line-ups, touring bands etc) at creation - which is more like 250 people. real nice spot thats getting more and more popular.. the costs are a little bit more though (pa hire is like $150, media club is free all the way) but thats balanced out a bit by their connection to phantom bill stickers

Have you been to see Jubaal??
I have seen them play a few times. I think they are the one of the best bands in Christchurch.
They play hard rock & could be interested in opening for one of your bands. Their email is jubaal1999@hotmail.com. I got it off their artists page. If they play I'll definatley come.

hard and fast punk with shards of guitar (gordons-style) thrown in for good measure. they're a really fun band.. been touring with the likes of the mint chicks.. they're known for having incredibly short (like 3 song) sets..

the dimmer gig was ok, though the vocal mix was a bit light at the front. they've got the stage relocated to the back-madras street corner now, and they've opened up the inside of the whole venue, joining the two bars, wit the pokie machines seperated off beside the toilets.
it pretty much works. i think the capacity is about 150 these days, and you can finally see / hear the band from everywhere in the joint.

howdy......tell more about the scene and the Jet set lounge vs Rock a cola. I have been out of Chch now for a year and a half and have sort of lost touch with the venues. I playb in a band and will return for some tunes in Late july....would love to play other than the usual.
the jetset has been closed to all bands ...
the jetset has been closed to all bands since the start of last year, refurbishing. they gutted the whole inside and reworked it, but its not quite finished yet. it looks like it might be an ok venue again.. preference at the moment though lays with the (small) media club over on armagh street by the fire station which is a great little free-for-bands venue, or the creation art-space (formery it was a movie theatre..) just outside the square on worcester st. apart from that, a lot of travelling bands play the wunderbar over in lyttleton. there's basically no venue outside the dux that you can gaurantee will have a gig on, but both the media club and creation are picking up steam. pretty much everywhere else (warners, hustlers, caledonian hall etc) no longer run..

the rocky cola is a reasonably new bar (used to be o'malleys i think) on manchester street amongst all the awful meat-markets an sports-bars. the walls are adorned with posters for limp bizkit, disturbed and marilyn manson, the sound is awful, and apparently they have a rather odd approach to gay / lesbian couples..it only holds about 100 people, yet for some reason eccles entertainment have booked several touring acts there - recently betchadupa and fur patrol, and of course had to turn away fans..

Hey Guys & Girls just thought id tell ...
Hey Guys & Girls just thought id tell you a bit about the new jetset lounge, its been closed for the last six or so months but is back open and booking bands again, and the gigs are flowing in the crappy old tavern it used to be is no more. Its now a decent stlyish venue with decent priced drinks and warm friendly atmosphere. They have opened the place right up as it was two small bars it is now one big bar
with a capcity of up to 400. The Managers name is Hayden and hes great ot work with, so if your looking to play some where why not give him a call the bars number is 03 379 7675 or jetsetlounge@xtra.co.nz and remember the polytec's right across the road with 10000+ students so if thats the market your trying to hit the jetset would be the perfect place.
