Mega Pixels For Dummies

Can someone lay down in english, all i need to know about buying a digital camera. What the hell is a mega pixel and something x zoom. Or just telll me what to buy. Sorry if this seems lazy, but don't really have much interest in learning all about them, i just want one - but not a shit one. I bought a film camera but i dropped it and now it's kinda fucked - anyhow it was too much hassle with all the developing and buying film etc.

Basically i just want to use this thread to ask really stupid questions.

Forums: The Bar,

its size that counts in the end (as the girls say)

think about what you want to carry around. a bag/case vs. pocketable.

then we can get seriosu about mega pxiels, zooming, battery life, lowlight capabilities.

if its just for fun go small. about ciggie pack size.

yeah man, just a small camera, but not a shit one do ya know? basically it has to take good photo's of drunk people etc...

how much do you want to spend?

money is no object... nah i don't know i mean i don't think i'd go over a grand, but then i don't know what that would get me either. What i do know is that with every product there is usually a price that separates the shit from the goodness

the sony cybershot ones are apparently real good. it can record small vid clips ( w/sound) and the graphics aren't too shabby either. and they're small too. and under a 1000 bucks.

everyone i know has bought canon cameras thus far and are all utterly happy with them. they also seem to last alright with batteries... Mine is a low end one and its good for simple photos.... although the canon A70 seems to work pretty well for taking gig photos.... its a 3.2 megapixel camera... and not too big

x 3 zoom is standard, don't even blink at digital zoom, it is a crock.

yeah, if you're gonna get one you might as well get a 64mb memory card and rechargable batteries along with it, and I agree, digital zoom sucks, look for size of the optical zoom

I use a Sony CyberShot P72 3.2 Megapixels Optical Zoom x3 , and Im pleased with this camera

If I was you, I would read information about those cameras just to understand a lit bit what are u doing/buying ... your drunk friends will be grateful when they will see those pretty pics ... mine are already!

Try this:

and chose what do you wanna understand (about pixels and zoom) ... simple and effective explanations

questions - how many mega pixels should i at least have?

- what lowlight features should it have?
- what brands rule and which suck?
- will i need to buy other software once i get this camera and does it cost lots?

thanks for the replies

sorry that was not supposed to be a reply to your post saxo

Canon, Sony, Nikon, Minolta = good

Nah, you shouldn't have to buy any extra software.

Personally, I think you should go for a Canon A75 or 80.

Hey manamana, you want at least 4mp I reckon (but 3 mp would be fine), and at least 10x digital and optical zoom-optical is the better zoom. I love Canon cameras, used them all my life and have never had a problem with them. My digital camera is a Canon S50 and is awesome. 5mp, 10 optical and digital zoom, about a million functions, lithium ion battery, everything included.

You get pretty hooked after you buy a camera and start getting all the extra memory cards and stuff, usually your camera will only come with a 32mb memory card, and you'll probablly want a 128mb one, which holds about 60 photos high quality, depending on your camera. Software will usually come with your camera, some of it is shit, and you might find downloaded programmes or your own editing programmes are better, but some of it is really good too.

It is all quite confusing at first, but just look around the internet and see what you like. Some parallel import places have cheap as digital cameras and I don't know anyone who has had a problem with theirs brought from one of those places.

I know some people with Sony digital cameras who aren't happy with them now at all, but if you like that brand, that's sweet. Nikon, Canon and Olympus middle range cameras all are pretty good I reckon. How much are you wanting to spend on it?

Tell us what you get when you get one.

A megapixel is 1 million pixels by the way, and the more pixels you have the better quality your photo will be. For example blow up a photo taken on a 2mp camera and the quality will be pretty crap, but blow up a photo taken on a 4mp camera, and the quality will be alot better.

Basically the more pixels that are in an image the higher the resolution will be and therefore the quality of the image will be greater.

thanks sophie, that was really helpful i actually seen one the other day with 8mp but it was $1600 buckas!! what you've described sounds pretty much what i'm looking for - something thats fun, but not shitty. I just don't want to buy something then have someone say to me "oh man for an extra hundy you could have got the 'mpx5000sp gti terminator cam' ya know.

Yep, completely know what you mean. I'm still very happy with mine months on. I've just seen it in a newspaper at $750 at a parallel imports place, and $1000 at an electronics shop. The 128mb memory car will usually cost you another 100 bucks or so.

A friend has a Canon A70, and that's pretty good too, I think they're around $400-$500.

My camera can take about 6 minutes of video with sound on a 128mb memory card. You don't lose quality by having a camera that does both, unless you get one of those 1-2 megapixel jobs. Definetely get one with video, you don't think you'll use it much but you do. You can also take stills off the video footage with the software you get and you can get some really funny shots.

I have a Canon A80, 4.0 mp and 3x optical zoom. Piss easy to use and comes complete with software (also incredibly easy to use). Filled with features, can take up to 3 minutes of video with sound. Comes with a 32mb memory card.

Out of my use with different types of cameras - Seagull, Nikon, Olympus... I've found that Canon are the easiest ones to use..

hey meeka do you lose anything in still picture quality, by having a camera that does video/sound aswell?

Not as far as I've noticed... The photos will come out as high quality as you want them to, on the A80, you can have them print quality or just computer/screen quality. I got the camera for still photos, my sister went through all the reviews of recently released cameras and decided this one was the best for what we'd use it for..
The video feature is just an extra for me, but you'd probably need a bigger memory card, as the 32mb one wont hold 3 minutes..

Didn't know you had a digi meeka, how long have you had it for?

Ah, I knew this topic was somewhere around here...

What is this deal like??? I'm not wanting to spend over $500 (and the less the better) but like mana I don't want to end up with a shithouse camera.

I just checked it out on the Consumer website. This particular camera gets a pretty reasonable rating at 76%. At $500 it is around $100 below recommended retail. The bundle offered looks pretty good.

But I have a couple of reservations ... image quality rating is not as high as other cameras in this price range. The Olympus C760, which has a very simliar specification and gets an overall rating of 74% has superior image quality (7.2 vs 6.0), costs around $430 retail and is quite a bit more compact and lighter. Disclaimer ... I have a C760 and have been very happy with it. Only down side if you by one is you will have to up-size the memory card as the standard on is only a miserable 16 MB. Other than tht the package is pretty complete though I would recommend getting a second battery as well. I got a pretty good deal from a local store here in Invercargill when I got mine.

But the Canon looks OK and is, according to the consumer website, very versatile and has excellent battery life.

Hope this helps

I'm glad Big Stu has got to the consumer website for you... as that was going to be my recommendation as well. I ended up using that info to pick up a second-hand camera from trade-me. I got a bigger one with more widgets, but I already sort of wish I had a smaller one (actually, I sort of don't, because I love all the manual settings). One interesting thing that (at least from the consumer website) is that the Olympus cameras overall seem to do pretty well. Overall, I'm pretty f***ing stoked that I got a mint swizzy camera that was originally waaaay more expensive for 300 bucks. Don't buy a camera without a zoom (that's an optical zoom, not digital!), and I reckon that 3megapixels is probably a bit low. Within the fairly narrow confines that I was looking at, very very few cameras came on trademe that I was interested in (like about 1 a month). I'm not sure if that means that they're uncommon, or people liked them. But then, I was was pretty much only interested in a C-5000,5060,7070 or 8080 (I ended up with a 5050)

Wicky, thanks for the help. Unfortunately I can't view which ones they recommend etc because I'm not a subscriber.

OK, so.... is there a level of optical zoom that I should look for? ATM it appears that even good cameras only have about 3x zoom as standard.

Also, how much are 128MB or 256MB memory cards, i.e how much extra should I be willing to pay if the seller will throw one in? Limey, I think I'm a bit less discerning than you - I just want something to take photos that's easy to use and will last for at least a couple of years, I think around 3 MP will be sufficient, from what some have told me?.

A few people I know have Sony Cybershots and find them pretty good - some are really cheap on trade me, are they worth it? Example below.

// I just want something to take photos that's easy to use and will last for at least a couple of years, I think around 3 MP will be sufficient, from what some have told me?.

In my (limited) experience, depends on whether you want print photos or just download. 3MP is fine for computer, and if you go higher than 4MP the photos are unweildy and not easily downscaled (I've got a 6MP setting that I never use); but 4MP would be the minimum for decent printed shots.

//4MP would be the minimum for decent printed shots.

Ah, I see. Just to clarify, you mean printed by actual camera shps, yes? Not @ home?

Probably applies as much to a home printer as to camera stores, but yes. I only ever take photos to stick them on my PC or on the internet; but if I was going to pay for prints then I'd use the 6MP setting.

I have a 3MP Panasonic camera with 3xOptical zoom. Purchased Feb 2004. It's really good for happy snaps of drunk people and group photos around the house, in the back yard etc. It's arse for any shots of landscape or things in a distance. The digital zoom is worthless, absolute bollocks.

The camera came with a 16Mb card but I upgraded to a 128Mb card that fits about 70odd shots at full res and it cost about $100 when I bought it mid 2004. With that many photos on the card there's not much point shooting at the lower MP.

The photos look good printed out at those "print yr own" Fuji and Kodak machines. My home printer doesn't do them justice at all so I don't really know what quality the photos would be like at A4.

Hope that helps

yeah, I'm in the 3mp camp, with a A75 Canon Powershot.

I reckon it's ace. The prints I've done have worked out all right - not as nice as ones from the SLR I've got, but, well, when I'm taking photos I know I'll want to print out, I'll use the SLR.

I upgraded from a 32mb card to a 128mb, and, like Joe, that gives me plenty of space for shooting at hi-res, and I can't remember ever having been in a situation where I've run out of space. I got the camera for something like $349 (used www.pricespy.co.nz to find the best price), and the card was $30 or something on trademe.

The A75 shoots okayish video as well - especially good for catching the kids doing fun stuff in the back yard.

OK, awesome. The auction is on Tuesday, so if anyone knows of any major reason why I should NOT purchase the Canon G2 at the link above, then please let me know by then, or forever keep your mouth shut.

OK, the comment above stands, but I was also wondering: most rechargeable batteries deteriorate after a few years, so that they go flat quicker etc. This will be an issue with the G2, yes? If so, then how easy would it be to buy a new battery for an old camera - especially so if it is a battery unit rather than 2 AA's?

Allegedly modern rechargeables don't have the "memory" problems of the old ones (think how long widgetfone batteries seem to last), although they still have a limited lifespan. Usually you can buy replacement batteries, but they could be upward of $100 (so find out what battery it takes and price a replacement). If you get an AA run battery, I recommend Varta 15 minutes charge batteries. Fully charged in 15 minutes!! Best yet, the 2 battery version is ready equipped for international use for you Jimi. Oh, and while I'm being specific, they're much cheaper at placemakers than dickies, so well worth the hike to South D.

ditto on 3MP for me too - my partner uses the camera (Kodak) for his work, which involves grabbing textures for 3D work - plus it prints good if you splurge on decent photo paper. all the pics on my flickr are from our Kodak digital (apart from a couple of live gig other-person-took shots) - think my flickr would be under iluvtheclean. lots of shots of Crete ... sigh ...

OK oh man this is awesome. Thankyou. I guess I should reciprocate by being more specific about my uses. I'm travelling next year, so there'll be lots of (probably long-range) landscape shots. But I'm also at Uni overseas next year, so there'll be lots of close up drunken shots too!

I'm a big 'hard copy' photo person, so I'll be taking a fair few images to camera shops to be printed like normal film photos to put in albums. Mum has a Sony Cybershot 5MP, and they come out pretty much exactly like film. I don't need it that good, but close would be nice.

I'm thinking the one below would be good. It's pretty old (reviews have it as 2001) but it looks like it was a really high-end product then (about US$1K), and got great reviews, so I'm thinking it's still viable. My only concern would be that software, along with other assorted technical aspects would have developed a lot in 5 years. What do y'all think?

Many thankyoooze.

that original one you posted above, my cousie owned - he's a real techno geek and bought it yonks ago - it was nice, but lacked a few bells and whistles, and was big compared to what you can get these days.

your call, but the one above looks good - looks a lot like our Kodak, and the foldy-outy-LCD doesn't come with all of them - often that's a feature of digital video cameras not digital still ones.

often drivers are available on Canon/etc's internet site, but if you a near a Mac OS X machine the drivers are all loaded up, well, i've never come across a missing driver in the years i've been working in X. i assume Windows has the same deal - basic drivers installed, especially for the main brands.

if you can get it, ImageReady (Adobe?) is a fantastic image-reducer - takes out heaps of info you don't need if you want to be emailing files to relatives etc. or you could just post to flickr! or find some decent share/freeware programme that will reduce your filesize, if you need to reduce at all.

though, even if you get a 5MP, you can always reduce the resolution you're snapping at - take pics at one-star quality = easy emailing and happy relatives. you don't have to take all your shots at the 5MP/full 3MP resolution.

//Limey, I think I'm a bit less discerning than you

I wanted a camera that would be as good as me toting round 2 cameras + 3 extra lenses + an external flash. Heh. so Um, yeah, it had to do good auto, but also be capble of completely fucking manual. My camera can take 2 different types of memory card simultaneously, which is fantastic. There's enough extra space that it also doubles as a USB key. heh.

A good photo-editing program makes re-sizing photographs very easy...

HOT DAMN auctions must be the most exhilarating form of purchase/selling on the planet.

Anyway, I got the G2 - no-one else even bid, which is a bit disconcerting but I'm stoked at this stage, got it for the starting bid. Thanks to everyone who helped. I'll keep y'all updated... just cause I'll be like a kid in a candy store.
