Why is that? i don't understand this mentality? had a run in with a an absolute wanker from the deep south last night, told me my flash shoes must have cost about $120 and were unnecessary and he even ripped out the jaffa call on us (never understood that one) So i tried to find common ground and talk about rugby, but he only went into an assult on what a big homosexual Carlos Spensor is. Jesus! if anyone ever asks me about other places in NZ i'm stoked to say that just about everywhere is fucking beautuful and worth being in. I never hear any Aucklanders talking negativly about, or mocking people from any ohter part of New Zealand. I hate this redneck mentality, fucking stop it!
So please, i am generally interested in why people think that Auckland is such an evil place full of wankers?
Auckland is beautiful, i love it. xxx

Technically you're from Manukau, aren't you? I think most NZers understand that John Banks is only the mayor of Auckland city, and not the whole Auckland region.

When i first moved to Auckland in 1998, ...
When i first moved to Auckland in 1998, it struck me as being very soulless. I thought the people dressed incredibly boringly compared to Wellington, and there didn't seem to be any centre to anything. Part of that was due to living in Mt Roskill and spending all my time in the Queen St area, and as I got to know my way around and learnt about the different areas that changed a little, but I still feel like Wellington is more interesting and open.
As someone that lived there for 20years ...
As someone that lived there for 20years of my life opposed to someone that moved there I can see why the newbies like auckland. If you move into town then you dont discover the suburbs and you find your own little wellington in the inner city. My friend was so alarmed 2 weeks ago when he ended up in Mangere Bridge. He didnt think any existed past newmarket.
I on the other hand dispise auckland because visiting it is a chore for me. People i know live all over the place and its such a mission to catch up with them. the traffic is terrible, the waterfront area is a cock up and there is no free parking. Its got its good points but Ive moved on. Wellington has what I need right now.

so true i have bin living in aucks for 10 years, and i recently wnt down to welly for a visit, and i fell in love with the place. it is so much more personal than auckland, and cuba street rocks!
the best thing about Auckland is that ...
the best thing about Auckland is that its absolutely huge, so theres plenty of things to do, and places to explore when you get the wanderlust. . .
the worst thing about auckland is that its absolutely huge, and if you actually need to get somewhere in a hurry it can be a bitch. .. plus it is a lot more spread out than most other cities i've been in (possibly christchurch is similar) thus you end up spending money on taxis or just getting really sore feet when you go out on the town .. and there's a hell of a lot of hills everywhere to walk up and down. ..
but i don't hate the place, and all the Aucklanders i've met have been pretty cool so far
I didn't want to move to Auckland, but ...
I didn't want to move to Auckland, but I was quite surprised to discover that Aucklanders were not only perfectly normal, but social circles were a whole lot easier to break into than in other places I'd lived. Possibly I might have said the same about Wellington when I lived there, but I don't think I met any native Wellingtonians.
I think the reputation arose because Auckland's a really crappy place to visit. It's great living here, but it's such a different scale and setting to every other place in the country. People visit for a week from Timaru or Taihape, hate it, go home and complain about how loud and horrible it is and the people are all busy and surly*, and it just helps build on the existing reputation.
* On a tangent, I have this theory that surly doesn't necessarily equate to nasty. When you have to deal with a lot of different people every day, be it in your work or just in transit, weaving through the crowds or the traffic, you get very insular. If you're not required to interact with someone then you won't, just because you need the mental space to yourself. Thus, people in crowded cities are going to be more curt/reserved than people from smaller towns, and people in the cities actually appreciate other people being reserved a whole lot more for the same reason.

I guess what i really need to hear is someone from Canterbury say that Auckland is a great place, the people are generally normal and Carlos Spensor is a fucking great rugby player.

well, you know, I'm a 6th generation cantab, and I must admit I love the bits of Auckland I'm familiar with (Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby), the locals I've met have, for the most part, been spectacularly nice (married one, in fact), but, well, Carlos aint that flash.

true, but theres good & bad things about all things, it just seems Invers gets the most of it just because it the most southern city in NZ.
I only want to leave because I've been here too long & want to see what the rest of NZ has to offer.
But the thing is I can't offord to move, unless I get somebody else to come with me, plus paying off a $4.599 drum kit doesn't help!!
i think the media has a bit of an ...
i think the media has a bit of an impact on people's perspective in a number of ways
when TVNZ moved their studios out if Christuchurch it basically disenfranchised the south island 's media voice and so because so much seems auckland generated , i think people, especially those from the south, feel under represented.
for example when that 'new zealand' music show space was on, there were so many auckland bands, and while i don't dispute that alot of good music comes from auckland, after a time it was clear that lesser talent was being shown rather than searching further afield for the best of what this country has to offer.
But in the same way, stations likes radio pacific and newstalk offer a good nationwide service

I was quite surprised when I was accosted by a Dunedinite in London once - I'd said I was from Wellington/Palmerston North/Whakatane and he got all snotty and started on about how I probably thought the north island was sooo much superior to the south island. I was really confused and told him I'd really liked the south island when I'd visited. It took the wind out of his sails, but then he used the fact that I'd undermined his argument to take another stab at my snobby north island ways even more.

Well if you think about it..its kinda true. Im from Auckland hard but thats not to say what I think of it. Basically its a snobby place..i been to Welly & Christchurch..man those people out there are so down to earth & pretty much you can feel their welcomeness in the air without them having to welcome you into their city. In Auckland you've got snobs galore. Its a business area full of retards with high jobs etc..those are the ones you should be directing your hate toward! Collectively we lose but for the interest of those who live here & who aren't wankers so to speak..Auckland still rocks.

You obviously haven't walked down Lambton Quay at lunchtime. I'm having trouble trying to even work out where the CBD is in Auckland. Is it in Queen Street?
