I was discussing with somebody how frustratingly crap Tranz Scenic is with getting people to their destinations on time and with general customer service. Has anybody else found this?

only issue i've had is that when i caught the northerner (due to my car blowing up in the waikato), the train was late into wellington by a couple of hours. .. this was however due to that whole 'tracks being too hot and expanding' fracas we went through a couple of years ago. . ..
but when you compare the trains here to ones overseas (i.e. Britain) they are quite pitiful, but obviously we don't have 50+ million people to fund them .. . .

pfft! Only if you're comparing number and frequency perhaps... in the time I was in London, they had plenty of huge delays for days at a time; particularly at the start of winter. Two of the reasons given for the delays included "frost" and "leaves on the tracks". You'd think that after a few hundred years of London weather, they might have thought to accommodate "winter" and "autumn" in their designs.

imagine the awe on my Aucklander face when I first caught the Paris Metro. Every 2 minutes! EVERY 2 MINUTES! Not 45... 2!

yeah they certainly have some delays in britain, and the occasional derailment killing hundreds, but with the exception of the london tube, the lines are nice and smooth, and the trains are reasonably comfortable, not to mention quite fast. .. .. .

taking the train to dunedin the bridge washed out over the rakaia and it was flooded around waimate so the train people abandoned us in timaru and didn't even offer alternatives for getting to our destination or a place to stay. that was probably my worst train experience

In January it took me and my sister 13 hours to get to Auckland on the train, due to "heat restrictions".
On the way back from Auckland the train broke down in the middle of the central plateau for two hours [at about 3am] meaning two extra hours of extremely uncomfortable "sleep".
It was scenic though: I saw sleeping cows for the first time in my life, I never knew cows sat down to sleep.

Yeah, it took us a bit over 13 and a half hours to get to Auckland (from Wellington). And this was about 10 years ago, before all the hot track problems

Yeah,I find myself embracing all Nz public transport's faults when in Europe,at least we don't really have pickpockets, hookers and scary doors that you're not sure if you should go through (sorry about the "personal experience"input there) in our train stations. And I'm sure our overnight trains aren't scary and bloodstained and fond of locking you in a cabin with a scary Russian twice your size a la those in Russia!
