I'll avoid going into a long dragged on rant.
But did any of you feel that the people in the doco, who were meant to represent the majority of twenty somethings were just not reflecting the way most of us are?
Just looking at my self (I know I'm odd though), and then looking at a lot of the people I know, and it just didn't add up to me.

pa - funny - good lesson .. don't go on crap shows like 60 mins.. they gotta make a story out of something... so if what you say is not sensational enough.. they will edit around it.. by cut and pasting your sentances.. they can more or less could have edited that piece to prove any piece of 'market research'

I couldnt relate to any of them either. They symbolised the person that i dont wish to become.
I also dont believe that generation next is extremely "camera savvy" either, the social groups at this bar were all out for attention. If a camera turned up in a bar I was dancing at I would probably leave.
//"They symbolised the person that i ...
//"They symbolised the person that i dont wish to become."
that pretty much sums it up for everyone here i think... They were an ad man's wet dream, an over stylised enditement that showed everything wrong with mainstream NZ culture. And I don't give a shit what anyone else here thinks, they were mainstream.
I had to turn the tv off when one of them blurted out some empty catchphrase when they were talking about clevage like "go the chicks!" then immediately realised afterwards just how stupid that sounded.

I went to Uni with one of the guys and I think one of the girls was a couple of years behind us, so I'm going ot have to say that I really really really hope that they were taking the piss.

just what the fuck is wrong with my generation?? do they have to go as far to the extent as where they want to expose themselves - naked or not - on national television?? come on us 20-somethings can do better than that, its giving our age group a bad name, cant us 20-somethings be like our parents genewration ie. protest, trip, listen to heavy as music, grow our hair long etc, etc.....sweet heyzoos, i wish i was born in 1950 and not 1980.

yeah about that - "whatever" belongs to the gen x slacker thank you very much. That and the attitude of "fuck you and your marketing/labels/ definitions".. that's why it's "x" for chrissakes. We rejected all labels and burst the utopian bubble that the older genreation was feeding us - finish school, get a degree and you'll get a great job.
winner of an idea though - assemble a non-representative sample of 'up for it' kids and ask them 'probing lifestyle' questions for an hour so at the end of it we get a one word summation of an entire generation's pysche.
//cant us 20-somethings be like our ...
//cant us 20-somethings be like our parents genewration//
But your parents generation are the ones to blame for the state of the present generation ... that is if you accept that people are the result of their up-bringing to a certain extent. So basically your parents generation fucked up by creating these little monsters. Now I am not specifically taking a dig at your parents LS; they have clearly done a fine job of bringing you up.
As to the actual show in question I must admit I didn't watch it ... however if it was like other shows of its ilk I suspect that the programme makers started out with a particular thesis and then sought out the evidence to support it. It is highly unlikely that the particpants chose were truly representative of their generation ... I assume they had half a dozen or so participants; what was the demographic spread? Male/female, Pakeha/Maori/Pacific Islander/Asian/South African/European/North American, straight/gay/confused, rich/poor, employed/unemployed/student ... just thinking about my own boys circle of friends.

// being staunchly anti-logos is just as trite as being a logo hound.
i don't see being "staunchly anti-logos" as trite... reclaim responsibility for the impression you make on others... branding is information pollution... turn the tv off / step outside the merchandising circus = have a life... VS. suck the devils cock / whore yourself to ideas dreamt up by advertising bozos
// it's still all about making some sort of statement.
WHOS STATEMENT?
if you don't have your own statement to make then align yourself with someone elses? - ZIEK HEIL!
// Some brands have got soul. some logos have got soul.
no brands nor logos have got soul - people have soul / animals (i reckon) have soul... but if you feel a warm conjuring of soul when you read the name 'coca-cola' (for instance) then UH-OHHH... every attempt an advertising campaign makes to inject soul into their brand just adds to the smoke screen clouding their earth-resource raping / sweatshop child-labour/ 3rd world exploiting / capitalist opportunism...
// wear whatever the hell you want to.
and forget the fact that YOU are part of a system of re-iteration which is leading / being lead deeper and deeper into surface-conscious materialism...
if we are all walking billboards - we should be wearing our heart on our sleeves - if we can find it under all the fridge magnets

strange how those chosen for the doco seemed to be swept up in some consumerist whirlwind whilst CLAIMING to be insusceptible to the tools of marketing.
people like stuff. my dad who is 73 can not only programme a video, he runs a Mac users club and teaches people half his age how to navigate the internet!
everyone should read "All families are Psychotic" by Douglas Coupland. strangely, he wrote Generation X back in the day. this book treats every person as valid and individual, the antithesis of some saddo marketing research.
