what a joke

I don't really like the idea of bands competing against each other seeing who is the better band!!
Music is not a sport!!!

But if I did join I wouldn't give 2 shits if I won or lost, I would just have fun.

I love the idea. I hate sport and its the only thing I can whip peoples asses at. Drums.

Music is Sport

yeah sure buddy, dofus

you've gotta hand it to intergalactic for doing the hard yards in organising something as big as this, but in many ways i'd prefer to just have a nz botb's again- won't it be great when some big indie band from L.A comes to the final in Auckland and ruins everyone's fun

//won't it be great when some big indie band from L.A comes to the final in Auckland and ruins everyone's fun

Why would they though?

Wow, I think it's a fantastic idea. I hope it all works out. Lot of work.

i'd like to see some kiwi or even aussie indie band whoop some LA bands ass so bring it on
:-)

i think it is pretty cheeky to be charging bands an entry fee of $50 without actually stating what the prizes actually are.

where the FBB gonna get that kinda money from?

ill sponsor ya.. but you'll have to dress up (or off) like that guy off that vodafone ad - whipped cream and kiwifruit.. and you'll have to find pip and put her back in the lineup.... easy money

//ill sponsor ya

me too. same conditions

Yeah, im sure with all the support FBB managed to aquire for the Jack Live thing it should be easy as to get $50 worth of sponsorship for your entry fee

FBB will be back. you can count on that.
Entering in a competiton to find the next tadpole? I'm not sure about that one...but who knows.

tadpole came third in the 1995 battle of the bands,
i recall a band from the south named 'condition red' kicking their ass.

i'd much rather see bands battle it out than solo dorks with kareoke wit

//tadpole came third in the 1995 battle of the bands

the mere fact that tadpole got place is bad enough. Its just that every band that i can think of who have won this competition has been an average to poor pop/metal or metal band. Either metaller or less metaller, but still relatives of Tadpole.

// i'd much rather see bands battle it out than solo dorks with kareoke wit

I'm not sure who this is referring to. But I can't think of anything worse then seeing "bands battle it out". Isn't that what the rockquest is for? Don't people grow up over being in band contests?

Solo dorks with kareoke wit are much more entertaining then 1000 metal bands who don't play any other shows other then lame competitions.

solo dorks are the so called idols, sorry if that was a bit vague
yeah i don't get into the comps neither,

but yeah..anyway. congrats to the organisers for taking this thing bigger. Even if i don't personally agree with it, I know many people will find this to be exciting and a good thing in their eyes, so i guess, well done.

Cheers dude - were good to go now

Intergalactic Records seem a little dodgy with this whole Battle thing. They charge bands a bunch of money to be in the competition. They charge the venues a bunch of money to have the heats held there. They give out prizes that they can provide to an artist for next to nothing... so where does all the entry fee/heat payments go to? Hmm? I would love to see a breakdown of costs and incomes for this competition.

How much do they charge venues? What cut of door takings do they get?

In Christchurch there is no door charge.

I have heard figures upwards of $1000 to hold the event at your bar... and $5 door charge for heats in Wellington. $10 for finals.

Be interesting to know, i would amagin that if they are charging venues the venue would take the door cost as there has to be somthing in it for the venue and i dont think drinks alone would cover it.

Still i have no problem paying the entry fee, its not as is organising somthing like this is easy so perhaps they diserve a bit of cash in the pocket.

The battle helps bands alot, and not just the winning bands, it gives exposure and a chance to play to a decent crowld for the newer bands and acts as a good platform for a band to break into the local scene.

Be inetersted to hear others opinions

im in a band that got to the national final last year. although i myself arent really a fan of the whole 'competition' side of things, it was a great experience to play in from of a ton of people and its defintily a good thing to have on the cv.
im not a fan of picking a winner when everyone is so different.

To be perfectly honest I have my doubts about this promotion. At times there seems to be a struggle to get sufficient talent to fill all the heats etc. And the organisers seem to make up some of the rules as they go along. A couple of examples from a couple of years ago. One of the Sth Auckland semi-finals consisted of two bands who had contested the Sth Auck heats and two who had performed at East Auckland originally. The East Auck Bands (imho, inferior pop/rock bands) went through to the regional final. Seems a little dodgy to me that you can go to a regional final in a region whihc you did not originally compete in.

To compound matters a Sth Auck band that was eliminated in the first heat ended up at the national final. Somehow they managed to eliminate a band (in the regional semi) who had finished ahead of them in their heat!

And the less said about the guy who usually does the sound at the Sth Auck venue the better. Lets just say that he does not take kindly to bands asking him to do things to improve their sound. And it certainly doesn't pay to play first cos the "sound check" is a actually the first bands performance.

The whole 'first band' soundcheck SUCKS I have experienced it at many multi-band events before, its not cool. You are highly disadvantaged.

BUT, I'm hoping it will be different this year as I will be entering. Do you reckon not to say anything to the sound guy or he'l be a cock to you? I usually have large problems with everything, ill just have to keep my mouth shut.

I think as far as this is concerned, it is not always completely the sound guys fault. In this competition the order of the bands is drawn on the night, usually when all the bands have arrived. Many bands in an attempt to not play first, do not turn up at the allocated time, so the draw is done late, and therefore there is not enough time for a proper soundcheck.

Lesson to be learned: always turn up BEFORE the allocated time, hope the other bands do the same, and give them shit if theyre not there on time.

Worst case I have ever seen was when 3 bands were playing, the didnt know what order they were playing in (this was for a different comp) and the first band was supposed to be on at 9pm. The band I went to see was told they would be on second, around 10pm. They had showed up at 8pm to make sure they had enough time to set up and soundcheck if they were chosen to be first. When it was almost 9 and the other bands had not shown up, they were forced to go on first, and because things were then running late they did not get a proper sound check. The other bands wandered in at almost 10pm.

Also, any good band will turn up early, have a nice chat with the sound guy, and if they have any special requirements for different songs will provide him with a set list that has such requirements written by each song. As long as you are not a complete prick about it the sound guy should be cool

The reality with things like this is it's still all about "commercial viability". If you're a fuckin amazing band live but there's no way the radio will play your stuff, you can pretty much forget it. Conversely, it's amazing how many atricious bands make it so far (Tadpole etc) off the back of competitions like this.

Went to the final a couple of years ago when Stardrunk won and was stoked for them as they're a bloody good band. That said there was this 9-piece live hip hop group from Chch there called F.U.S.A and they kicked ass but didnt even get a mention in the final awards for the lack of "conventional" radio-friendliness. Bands like Velez made me wonder how the hell they even got past their local semis

I think it is a GREAT thing that Intergalactic records have done - its gotta be better than IDOL. This is real live muscians, who are talented songwriters and who have been fighting for this their whole life - the hard way - it just opens up the whole thing to include other countries, I think it is going to do alot for the NZ music industry. I have been in the B of B a couple of times and this is why I think it is good - it makes the whole band lift their game - you have to think about EVERYTHING in your performance - its not a competition to say my bands better than yours! its a great place to meet other bands and set up future gigs and it gives your band invaluable experience - im entering this year - Andrew Featherstone you rock!!!

Apart from putting on a show for your dedicated fans I wouldn't bother. The heats and semi etc have the most pathetic organisation I've ever seen. And the fact the judges are of all similar interests, mostly metal and start drinking soon as they turn up, and are pissed by the end of the evening, which from my experiences runs atleast two hours behind schedule. Just show the actually professinalism of the event.

I know Intergalactic have high hope but if it run like this overseas, NZ will be laughed off the map. I think a better move would to be trying to run a professionally run event here NZ before exposing all our weaknesses overseas.

If bands don't turn up at the right time then they shouldn't play. The only bands that get newhere are ones the act professionally and are committed. This is essential in any industry, and is the same in the music industry.

Don't call me negative, I would call it realistic.

What a load of crap!!! I have been in the b of b twice and it NEVER runs late, the only time I ever experienced it running late was when the stupid bar in Howick was playing a rugby game on the big screen and made all the bands wait until it was finished. My experience has been that 99% of the time the bands are EARLY and your comments about the judges are unjustified - the judges are all increadibly different from all walks of life with completly different music tastes and all are professional with music/industry knowledge- its crap that the bands that succeed are mostly metal - the best band on the night is selected and if it happens to be a metal band then just get over it!!! The judges do NOT get drunk - they all take it VERY seriously and may have the odd drink but hey we are talking about adults here and when your a grown up you can have a couple of drinks without becoming pissed!! All the bands that enter B of B are extremly commited otherwise why would they waste their time putting themselves on the line to be judged - they are trying to gain experience for themselves and most of these bands are out there giving there dreams everything they have!

Wow, two different people in two different heats/venues/cities/islands with two completely different experiences of the competition. Who'da thunk it? If *any* of the gigs are badly run then that'd definitely need to be addressed before exporting the competition; especially if it has anything to do with proximity to Orc-land.

PS - All conjecture. Just a thought.

I can only speak for Christchurch. you might as well scrap the 1st band, the sound is absolutely awful. The judges (9 times out of 10) are the bar staff/girlfriends of the bar staff at the blues bar! Thats ridiculous!

In 2002 there was a couple of heats that were judged by people from the music industry - a few heats into the competiton, they disappeared and ever since, its been the bar staff? Hello? Does that sound wrong to anyone else?

I saw a band that played shockingly and got all the way into the regional final? I think intergalactic records should have a few more ground rules for the venues to follow to give everyone a fair go.

Last year New Damage won the Christchurch heats - (in my opinion) they probably were the best performing band and I'm glad they took it out. But with such a shabby venue running the event with shocking sound/judges etc etc, I'm surprised a good band got through.

Guys... if you are in a young band and just want to play for the sake of it at one of these things... enter and don't pay the fee. They will give you shit, and the guy representing them at the venue will try and get cash out of you... but the worst that can happen is that they won't judge you and you won't be able to win.
