THE GOLDEN RULE

Forums: The Bar,

ok... and?

.

"to thine own self will ones shameless self-promotion be true"?

I thought that was 'do unto others as they do unto you' I think you need to download the latest update to your bible Mister O

I've never seen the bible describe 'do unto others...' as the golden rule. Moreover, the do unto others thing is strictly old testament, and was overwritten by Jesus with 'turn the other cheek'.

no! wait...ummm...I'm getting mixed up. I was thinking of 'eye for an eye'. Sorry, my bad...as you were...hey! look over there...

no- the operative words are- have them do- not- have done- the meaning was implicit since mo dropped the tabs

I think I can hear someone calling me.

PUT ON THAT HAPPY MASK.

I'd always wondered what you meant when you referred to The Golden Rule!

B F Skinner might say that's kind of a hard rule to break though, really- i.e. one will only ever do what one is bound to do, based on whatever they believe 'thine own self' is, right or wrong...

//to thine own self be true//

waht exact;y does that mean lena o. is it "like what you want to, unless lena o doesn't like it"

I think it's more: if you write a song that lena o deems to be true to your individual voice/spirit/style, not watered down by perceptions of how things should sound, then that song is brilliant.

The golden rule relates to how to determine if music is good or not.

well why don't you marry her then huh?.................huh?

the golden rule is good in theory but then your wife has dissrespected some perfectly good artists, and like Beyonce and Ronan keating...... so true,

I meant "likes" ...

Yeah, I was offering a bullet proof defence for everything lena o ever wrote by suggesting you'd got it wrong.

I'd have to move to Utah to marry her... actually even there it's illegal. Perhaps San Francisco is more relevant anyway. ;)

Oh, I just re-read what I wrote and realised why you might think I was agreeing with lena. When I said the song will be brilliant I meant by her standards, not by mine.

I think her golden rule's as crap a rule as any for judging the quality of music. It's focused on perceived intent rather than results, and feigns objectivity in an area where such a thing is impossible (if not irrelevant).

Case in point: Shayne Carter has said his latest Dimmer material is all about being as honest as he can be, so therefore it should all fall on the right side of the golden rule. Yet lena's said recently he/she/it/they reckon(s) Shayne's writing has fallen off since the Fits. So you're in the ugly position of saying Shayne's a liar on two counts a) in his writing and b) in his opinion of his writing. Nice.

Not to mention that it also suggests that someone cannot be moved or simply enjoy music which was written in false/cynical/whatever circumstances and, really, can't even form an opinion of a piece of music without at least taking a stab at the writer's intentions. WTF?

Why the defensiveness everyone? I think jet was onto something in his initial astute analysis of lena's post.
But there's no need to confuse lena's self confessed inclination to ammuse herself with various forms of overstatement and baiting, with a jem such as this post.
Clearly what she is getting at is that the more of your true self you can inject into your music the better it will be. How can anyone dispute this? This is the only thing truely unique and original that you have in your arsenal so the more you use it the better - the rest is just packaging.
As far as the Shayne thing goes - doesn't mean lena thinks he's a liar, she just thinks he's not quite achieving what he's set out to do.

try it jet-

1- apply it to yourself
2- it finely tunes your bullshit meter
3- you can than use that bullshit meter on others

it works- & no- i never said shayne was better in sjf- i will say shayne showed a potential in randolph- maybe in the 1st sjf ep too- which he hasnt attained since- something always gets in the way of him being totally comfortable with his true voice

////

or maybe he set expectations that just could not be fulfilled no matter what he did form then on.

Kind of like Bowie, it was what he promised, be never really delivered.
He's still written some good songs, and better ones than 99% of other musicians, so give credit.

//i will say shayne showed a potential in randolph

maybe you liked that song, and then just didn't like other stuff he did. i don't get the need to express this attitude like you are somehow qualfied to pass judgment

i am qualified- the world needs me to pass judgement

oh, my mistake.

actually- bowies a good eg- ¿how can such a fake be true to himself?- ¿when was bowie ever bowie?- total iago complex- yet- so much of his stuff falls on the right side of the golden rule

For starters to say that Bowie never really delivered is just plain rediculous.

Re the comments about Carter's assertion of his music being honest etc. This is a good indication that he has gotten to the place where he recognises that this is the holy grail and that's the zone where he wants to be operating. Now a lot of musicians come to this realisation over time but unfortunately thinking it and truely achieving it are worlds apart - it's a long and sometimes painful journey to embark on and in most cases will involve at least a period of unlearning/purging. Shayne has real talent which has been proven over and over again - I wish him well on this most rightous quest.
