i have! it's incredible, i don't even have words to describe how much i liked it.

oh, i haven't seen Ran, i'm on the lookout for Kurosawa flicks at the moment, particularly Kagemusha and Rashomon ... i'm also very very compelled by Dreams.
sadly, Seven Samurai is still the only Kurosawa film i've seen, i tend to concentrate my attentions more towards chinese films, Kid From Tibet and Barefoot Kid spring to mind ... not nearly on the same level artistically but still gorgeous in their own way.

I'm jonesing for a Kurosawa box set. I think there are a few on Amazon.
A great film in the Seven Samurai vein ...
A great film in the Seven Samurai vein is Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev - a 3.5 hour epic set in medieval Russia and concerning the life and times of a monk/icon-painter. It is a slow-moving, highly intellectual film (typical of Tarkovsky's work), but there are some glorious action sequences - in particular a Tartar raid on a village: blood, fire, destruction, cows aflame - it's all good.

I tried to watch 'Ran' when it was on TV (must've been tv one) when I was about 14 or 15, and was completely confused and generally bored. :) Not the kind of thing you can take in as a kid (sorry young person, legally. ;)
I love 'Hidden Fortress'... the weird princess who screams all the time (perhaps it makes sense to Japanese?) and the two guys c3p0 and r2 were based on.. they're a crack up. :D
I'd like to see more. Has anyone seen the later Kurosawa stuff? The ones in contemporary settings? I'm curious what those might be like.
And Toru Takemitsu's scores for most of the big Kurosawa films are awesome.
Re: Tarkovsky, I'll never forget deciding not to go out one New Year's and instead getting out 'Mirror' on video. :D I thought it was awesome, but soooooo slloooooow... and there was no way I could figure out why various things were happening.. but beautiful images. My (now) wife fell asleep within half an hour. Fair call I reckon. :)

PS. Grimmybug - if you're not in Wellington but are happy to pay a small fee (basically $6 on top of your tape/DVD hire), you can hire a whole lot of Kurosawa from Aro Vid's courier service.

Tarkovsky … I had no idea... hmm I have note, tnx. :)
I just know Sergei Eisenstein, ... when I was 20 I watched three of his movies (must-see movies): “October”, “Battleship Potempkin” (famous for that film scene with the baby in the carriage tumbling down the stairs... imitated in “The Untouchables”) and “Old and New”. Black and white and silent films, ... so, get ready! (Do not watch those movies on a sunday hung over morning ...).
Jet
Try it again ... “Ran” is wonderful, those colours, those flags, that photography...and you’re not a child anymore, just a pseudo-young one like me :) (with all due respect)
About last Kurosawa’s film, I cant help u sorry. The must-see movie list is too long.

Grimmy
Ive seen Kagemusha, and I liked that movie, but I cant say anything about Rashomon (it have very good comments)
And I’m sorry, but I dont know those chinese movies. Are u a fan of martial arts?
I like that movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” by Ang Lee, really good, fascinating, and there are good martial arts ( lit bit dreamy but)

saxzo - i am a big fan of martial arts, ...
saxzo - i am a big fan of martial arts, barefoot kid is probably one of my favourite films, stars actors mostly unknown in western circles, but it's got flawless choreography and the story, while based around fairly standard chinatown themes is a brilliant bittersweet tragedy, heavy on the melodrama according to the write-up on imdb. i don't want to give away too much but if you're at all into martial arts you should check it out
kid from tibet stars (and was produced and choreographed by) yuen biao who is a pretty big star in those circles, he's a colleague of jackie chan and samo hung and they've done a lot of films together. he's probably the most serious of the 3, samo hung being the silliest and jackie chan being somewhere inbetween. he's also an exceptional martial artist
i'm pretty much a well-rounded film fanatic rather than subscribing to any specific genre, but for some reason i'm intensely drawn to asian film, martial arts, manga, drama, it's all good. there's a lot more philosophy imprinted into even the most ridiculous of action films than your average hollyschlock piece of crap, so perhaps that's it. sick of being patronised :)
also, plain and simple, even if half the tricks they do are on wires, it looks damn impressive. any jerkoff can shoot a gun, after all.

Curious, very curious .. an artist who is fan of martial arts and chinatown .. :) ... is it an inspiration’s source?
Tnx for the info. Im not a fan of those movies, but I tolerate them... and I like manga too, but I dont spend money on that... sporadic fan (well, I confess I was a fan of Captain Harlock/Herlock when I was younger), ... just to scrounge those comics from my friends condo. Im like their personal squatter.. thats an honour.
//sick of being patronised
Totally agree, ...we say: in the variety u can find the good taste ( a spanish version of “variety is the spice of life” or whatever (...) )
Does anybody remember Captain Harlock?

just a fan of the arts in general, big movie fan, big music fan, big art fan - love it all
as far as inspiration is concerned there's probably a little influence from everything :)
which is why variety is important!
