Anyone see Radiohead on Nightline last night. They said they weren't playing NZ becuase they couldn't find a big enough indoor venue for their show.
Their Australian shows are sold out - 2 nights in Sydney and 2 nights in Melbourne so they're obviously pulling some huge crowds.
Anyone got any figures on our largest capacity indoor venue?

More importantly, why do radiohead need an indoor venue, thats kind of arrogant, i would be pissed off, if all international bands refused to play because of tiny indoor venues, although this does highlight the point, that new zealand needs an indoor sport stadium and concert venue

Yeah, they supposedly have a massive show set up. I read comments from the guy who did the Zoo TV and Popmart stuff for U2 saying this blows all that out of the water, best tour experience ever, visuals 360 all round the audience, etc. Dunno if they mentioned any of that on Nightline.
I do wonder how big an audience they'd pull in NZ. I was shocked that the first Melbourne gig sold out in about 3 hours or something... I presumed since they'd gone all farts and whistles and pots & pans their fanbase would've shrunk. Or are people going hoping for 'OK Computer' and earlier?

if they're totally sure they'll pull the crowds, why can't they do TWO shows somewhere like Queens Wharf - if they both sell out, surely its worth their while?
I think the issue seems to be the size ...
I think the issue seems to be the size of the rig. If it's bigger than U2's Zoo tour then that's going to need a massive amount of space. Guess it's not weather proof either.
Leave the rig in Aussie between ...
Leave the rig in Aussie between concerts and zap across here quickly for a smaller gig. (assuming there is a gap between gigs). Who's going to bitch? I wouldn't and I don't think they can - they're only touring three weeks of this year...

Ask the tour manager how costly even that would be.
You can get one-way flights from Sydney ...
You can get one-way flights from Sydney to NZ for what, $200? And a guitar can't weigh more than the 20kg baggage allowance you get, so really, for less than a grand they could so easily pop over and do an accoustic gig in my lounge. I've got a spare room, I can put them up. Sheesh Radiohead, stop being so bloody miserable and come on over.
they said during the Nightline ...
they said during the Nightline interview that they'll want to make the rig more flexible next time so they can pack it down to smaller venues.
If you look at the tour they're doing - the venues are few and massive.
Yeah, and that's fine, but saying they ...
Yeah, and that's fine, but saying they can't come here because of our venues is sort of misleading. They are choosing to only play where their rig can be accommodated, so saying 'Man, we really really wanted to play NZ but hey, your venues don't meet the standard" like it's somehow impossible for them to work here is bemusing.
I reckon the Radiohead boys have been ...
I reckon the Radiohead boys have been talking to their old mate Neil Finn. The line about not big enough indoor venues seems a little too conveniently close to Grand Master Finns recent venue shortage statements.

Seriously, New Zealand needs an indoor entertainment venue.
Not an old circus tent.
Not a sports stadium.
But an actual, purpose built large indoor entertainment venue.
We should thank Radiohead for highlighting this.
Yeah it's a problem that we have sweet ...
Yeah it's a problem that we have sweet fuck all venues in this city for live music (I'm in Auckland)
BUT you know it's kinda lame on the musicians part to be sooo fucking wanky that they won't come over to play a set if they can't have a 30,000 strong crowd. Now I have to ask, who the fuck wants to be at the back of a 30,000 crowd anyway? I wouldn't bother... And also who wants to listen to Radiohead anymore anyway. Their new stuff sucks, I think they did too much acid in that wee country house where they recorded their last two albums.
Remember the good old days when musicians used to come and play at the powerstation? The crowd was small enough to have a great vibe, you could actually see the band - it was awesome!
Can you not read Chickadee, the reason ...
Can you not read Chickadee, the reason is not the amount of people that can go to the gig but the size of the rig they have... I dont think they are expecting 30000 people, they just can't get there rig into our venues.... I will also put my hand up for wanting to listen to Radiohead, I think they are amazing and there new stuff maybe different but its smart and seems to incaptulate where maybe they are at musically?.... All this bitching about, the old stuff is better, is starting to sound like a Shihad/Pacifier site... Get over it.....

i do agree we need more big venues , and definiltey in NELSON gezz a basketball court will just not do anymore !!!! but i disagree with ur radiohead comment they have awesome music, and i have to give them hands up for them trying a newer angle its better then same old same old-plus it gives them a bit of individuality!!

no one band NEEDS a rig that huge, not U2 or Radiohead or anyone...
maybe at a festival with lots of bands, but it is completely unnecesary
having said that, if music is a form of art, then i'm not about to get in the way of someones creative expression, however grandiose and ridiculous it is.....
if they want a massive rig, let them have it, and i'll wait around for some good bands to tour here
Yea I can read actually. To be honest ...
Yea I can read actually.
To be honest I was sciving off work and read the first few posts and then went straight to post in my opinion. So therein lies my misunderstanding.
BUT sorry to harp on about the good ole days, I'm gonna do it again...I saw Radiohead the last time they came here, it was fucking awesome and it was a smallish venue.
There were no bells and whistles, shite visuals or any other 'trippy' effects. I'm all about the music and would rather go back to smaller venues, intimate settings and damn fantastic noise. I would respect Radiohead more for leaving their rig over there and coming over and treating their fans to a set here, even at out small venue. I think it's about time that bands remember where there fans come from and I might sound utopian but thats my opinion.
Oh yeah and U2's bells and whistles have been the undoing of them. When they played here years and years ago - I'm thinking 13 years ago (I'm sure someone will correct me if I am a few months off) it was plain and simple some of the best live music you could ever wish to hear.
Meh, whatever...each to their own.
The last time U2 played in NZ was about ...
The last time U2 played in NZ was about '93. I hardly think you can call the Zoo TV rig "Plain and simple", that was a pretty massive undertaking. I think one of the reasons they haven't been back since is that the shows didn't sell anywhere near capacity, hence missing out on both Popmart and Elevation tours.

how many people have heard of the Superdome? its a big indoor stadium the councils been planning on building up in Auckland by the old railway building down on quay st. since like 1997 or something. so hopefully it'll be up and running in a few years cos theres obviously a need for one.
yeah i was gonna bring that up. there ...
yeah i was gonna bring that up. there are plans for a superdome in auckland. it's offcially called the Auckland City SuperDome at the moment. they were delayed because the company that was gonna run it pulled out (the same one that runs sydney dome). now the company that runs the Sydney & Brisbane Entertainment Centres is gonna run it.
the thing that has taken so long is the cost. auckland city, as usual, has to foot the bill for a large project that wil eventually be used by people from all over the Auckland Region, let alone all over NZ. There should be funding from it from somewhere like the regional council or other local councils.
it looks like the aim is to have it open by the end of next year.

wellington (As john banks pointed out recently) gets to fund parliment, now i think that is used by a lot more NZ'ers and has more far reaching benefits than some superdome...
and what about all the money people from other parts of NZ bring in?
couple million for the BDO?
couple million for the couple of big shows every year?

Well, it's all become a moot point given Thom Yorke's wrecked his voice and had to cancel future concerts.
Monday night in Melbourne was amazing. The best rock gig I've been to. And (whether or not it was necessary) the light and video displays were fantastic.

Love that, hadn't heard it in ages - I'm gonna put it into conversation as much as possible today ("moot" count at 5 so far).
I heard they were pretty average on monday, I'm glad you liked it, but I'll keep telling myself they weren't gonna be on form anyway... damn sooky thom & his sore throat.

I hear he's a bit whiney when I listen to their records. :)
Yeah, his voice wasn't the greatest, particularly later in the set. When it got to encore time I wanted him to not come back on, just for his own sake.
I guess I'm betraying my biases but I was absolutely floored by the integration of electronics into the rock format, the fact that the "guitarists" managed to keep the performance element up whether they were crouched in front of a million foot pedals, pushing and nudging a plastic panel, or re-routing patch leads on a big modular synth up the back.
That said, I was also floored by 'Exit Music', just Thom singing and playing acoustic guitar for most of it... but yeah, in the encore they did 'Fake Plastic Trees' and he was struggling.
Still loved it. For context's sake, I'm not a rabid fan - I own one album, although I did have a few earlier singles and have lost another album at some point. But I loved their concert in Welli in 98 so when some friends said they were going I said I would too.

OMG, Johnny played this one fairly intense guitar solo (in 'Backdrifting' from memory) and all the individual notes were backwards!??! WTF? It's taken me the intervening couple of days to figure out how that's even possible, but on the night I was just consumed by the sound... fuck explanations...
