What a joke...this is a disgusting thing for NZONAIR to be associated with..such a comericial and Americanised show can hardly be called 'NZ' on air anyway...
how did this happen? $450,000.....pretty much what they would have spent on M2 had it been upheld by TVNZ....FCKN TV what a pile of shite
Reading between the lines a little... I wonder if there is/was some concern that it was not going to break even. For all the hype, I don't think their ratings have been that great, and you really have to wonder about the number of people voting....
I've never seen one of those top 10 shows, and despite on the most half having very descriptive titles, I'm not even sure what two of them are even about. I reckon ACNielsen figures are a scam. They don't really have 470 peoplemeters dotted around the country - they just charge all the tv companies for the stats they've dreamed up in the board room on monday morning.
If the peoplemetres thing is true, I suspect far too many of them are located in Tauranga and Timaru.
Peoplemeters only go to people who own their own homes, which I suspect is not very many people on NZm or young people in general (and if you DO own your own home, jolly good work, now please to get yourself a peoplemeter. Thank you.).

THX NZ ON AIR!
ok, well NZ on Air can obviously argue that thier involvement with NZ Idol is completely within thier own charter. Its putting New Zealand faces infront of a New Zealand audience. However, I really think its totally unnessessary and and I am sure that there are some heavy politics involved between TVNZ and NZ on Air in order to spread the risk and to optimise TVNZs profits. the 'Idol' franchise is a massive success worldwide even in a country like Norway where the population and demographic is very similar. So why the need for public funding? I'd love to know who approached who? Is it another example of NZ on Air needing to be involved and controling everything on NZ airwaves? I'd love to see just one New Zealand production to live or die under its own steam.
It's suprising that an internationally franchised show, which has been proven to be highly successful and profitable elsewhere, should require any government funding to be made. Especially when you consider shows like mo-show which are made without any NZ On Air funding.
fuckin' hell, that's a fair chunk of money... i can see why they'd do it though, it fulfills NZOA's performance criteria/mandate and then some... but to me it only hammers home the fact that NZOA's charter needs a serious rejig.
balls to rodney hyde though. officious prick. brendan smythe told me they always do the "rodney hyde question" whenever they're presented with a funding proposal though, he must've been on a coffee break when the NZ Idol one came through ;-)
No surprise when looking at how NZOA grants are given to artists on major labels, but I thought their charter was about getting original commercial NZ music on air not funding an overpriced karoke show singing overseas covers with the odd nz song... makes me laugh when I had been to a few NZOA seminars and hear Mr Smythe talk about supporting NZ artists when they blow alot of the years budget on IDOL.. How many new recording grants or music vids could have been made with that cash which would have been better spent..
"NZ On Air's job is to promote and foster the development of New Zealand’s culture on the airwaves by funding locally-made television programmes, public radio networks and access radio, and to promote New Zealand music by funding music videos and radio shows"
yeah, so they do tv as well as promoting nz music - but how does nzidol reflect nz culture?? they do spend heaps on tv tho... so some of it has to go towards crap ... people like crap
"Our funding is roughly divided as follows:
Programmes for television $60.3 million
Public radio services $27.6 million
NZ music promotion $3.9 million
Transmission $1.2 million
Archiving $1.1 million "
I think you'll find that the NZonair budgets for making television programming and funding music videos/recording are completely separate - therefore funding this project would only be affecting what television is produced - not music
Sorry - made my last post before reading samflux's post which pretty well say's the same thing. No matter what your opinion about the relative merits of NZ idol I think it is fair to say that NZ has a long running tradition of this sort of talent scouting music show - after all it was NZ that first came up with the popstars concept - anyone remember Truebliss?
NO question though that voting stats must be extremely low, if they were huge do you think Andy Shaw would be refusing to release them - I don't think so.

Now, the good thing about that list is that at least half of the top ten are locally produced. Not necessarily 'good' or 'culturally significant', but it's good to see locally made shows pulling in the advertising dollars and giving local workers the chance to work on some top-rating shows. It was interesting listening to Danny Mulheron on National Radio last night talking about the Serial Killers comedy. He was of the opinion that you have to make 'a lot of crap' TV before you start to figure out what works and what doesn't, from which point you start to make good TV. That was his explanation, anyway, as to why NZ comedies are so hit-and-miss, we just don't make enough. Although, why and how NZ became world experts at 'reality' shows (thanks Julie Christie) is a mystery to me.
And yes, as samflux and slippery have pointed out, the TV funding is completely separate from NZ Music funding. Mr Smyth would have had nothing to do with this - you can blame Neil Cairns for this one.
I just want TVNZ to be more like the UK's Channel 4. Or even BBC2 (snooker! in prime time!).
now this CANT be right - all of the shows in the top 10 are on tv 1! doesn't this prove the peole meters are only in the houses of people who own them?
Pop Idol is a franchise owned by 19TV (simon fuller). I would imagine that 19TV collects from every Idol show around the world. Does anyone know how the franchise works? Does a percentage of the show's profits go to 19TV or does each country/network pay a simple fee to produce the local version of the show?
I know from popbitch (I think) that the Idols only get $1400 (probably american) as their appearence fee on World Idol - think about how much revenue that show must make, and you can see that Simon Fuller isn't doing too badly for himself - especially after he got 10% of the Spice Girls too.
wow - freaky ... im scared... hmmm,, its difficult... a big part of me thinks that nzonair should keep out of this massive money making exercise... but then it is popular, so maybe it is their resposibility to help it out... sheesh i dunno - very confusing
NZ Idol is watched by an awful lot of New Zealanders, and it does portray New Zealand culture, to an extent. New Zealanders are hired to work on the show, New Zealanders gain exposure on the show, and the Idol hopefuls do sometimes sing New Zealand songs, drawing attention to other New Zealand artists. I have no problem with some NZ on Air funding going to the show - I mean 5000+ people auditioned for the show alone - that's probably a heap more people who care about it than some other projects NZ on Air has funded.
If a significant percentage of profits are to go to a offshore company, surely it is inappropriate to spend NZ taxpayer money on funding the production?
I'd love to know how much money was invested by TVNZ and South Pacific Pictures.
Does this mean that the New Zealand taxpayer essentially took the risk by funding this production and yet if this 'investment' does pay off it will allow an offshore company, 19TV, to reap profit?
Surely a production of this nature - ie a proven and successful overseas franchise, should be able to come up with private investment and not require public funding?
Shouldn't public funding be reserved for those local productions, where the profits remain in New Zealand, and where traditionally it has been hard to secure investors or sponsors to get the production off the ground.
And on that note shouldn't NZ On Air be encouraging those productions that are extremely likely to secure private investment or sponsorship, to do so before approaching NZ On Air? (in the case of Idol one would imagine Telcom and Vodafone stood to earn substantial income from the show and could therefore have been potential sponsors)
well - i can see why nzonair would want to be involved... they only have to spend under half a million... and they reach a huge audience. im sure they only be paying a small precentage of the overall cost of the thing..
i can also see why its a bad idea for nzonair to be involved in something that is so blantantly un-kiwi, and is sending heaps of dollar off shore.
but the poeples at nzonair dont structure themselves to look at it that way.. thats just the nature of the beast - lets remember that we're lucky to have nzonair.. many countries would just spend that money on a hangfull more tanks.
also - (trying to stay perched on the fence here) but a lot of the 'local' production companies that receive fundung are also sending money offshore.. but i think thsts another argument
Well, it was a guaranteed formula so I imagine they would have considered the grant / loan to be a pretty low-risk proposition that achieves their goals.
As for all the talk about "kiwi culture" - noone really knows what the hell it is, except that such-and-such-a-show is popular in NZ. Now they have a locally produced version of a show that lots of kiwis have enjoyed. I don't have a problem with that. NZOA aren't an anti-american watchdog with a mandate to ram Aotearoa heritage and mutton down our throats.
The only thing I'd be interested in finding out is the profit margins. If the show was a monstrous success, sponging millions of dollars in inflated text rates from teenagers, would NZOA reap some rewards of their own, or are they content to merely see the show on TV and help line the pockets of a private outfit that got an interest-free loan?
i am with rodney hyde over this one - why is $450,000 of our precious taxes going towards funding a half-baked reality TV Show?? shouldnt this money be better off going towards maintaining essential government services than a TV show. but it also begs the question. "do we really need NZ on air after all?" surely we would want NZ talent to succeed but keeping a Leftist-PC organisation which was until 5 years ago promoting an illegal tax is probably more costly than we think. - UK and US bands dont recieve PC-funding anyway and they are doing very well. so again keeping the PC out of a private band will in my opinion help a kiwi band go a long long way.
not sure how you made the cross over to nz music there big guy.. i think the scheme is great.. we wouldnt be seeing the growth in nz music that we're enjoying at the mo if it wasnt for nzonair.. and i dont think you can compare our music industry with that of the uk.. we have 4 millions people they have close to 60
Consider the BBC Sam - Public funding pays for a lot of quality programming in the UK.
"The BBC is financed by a TV licence paid by households. It does not have to serve the interests of advertisers, or produce a return for shareholders. This means it can concentrate on providing high quality programmes and services for everyone, many of which would not otherwise be supported by subscription or advertising."
There's no doubt in my mind that NZ On Air is a vital organisation for local television production however their methods of reaching funding decisions are perhaps creating a catch 22 situation - To be eligible for funding from NZ On Air, a programme must first have secured a major free to air network to air it - that is either TVNZ or TV3. Both networks have advertisers interests to consider. Advertisers like high ratings. You saw the Top 10 shows last week.... what kind of shows are TVNZ and TV3 going to agree to air and therefore what kind of shows are going to be eligible for NZ On Air funding? It all comes back to those 470 homeowners in tauranga with peoplemeters....
SAMFLUX: i meant "they are doing very well" - at least for there country of origin, i can say the same thing about NZ yet any country as well, and no im not on crack, just coffee.

Rememeber the commercial music industry and the public at large shunned NZ music for years because they thought it was "sub-standard" - we all know this to be untrue now, but without a concerted effort from the government and various other groups ( including the b.net ) that never would have happened.
