Since when did the strokes have a following?

Also, do any men like teh strokes? I had no idea that they were at all popular. I for one think they suck royally, boring as hell, and the fact that I've seen a few ladies here mention how they find various members of teh strokes attractive completely puzzles me. Just last week I walked into a shop wearing my civil war jacket ,and some dude accused me of being a fan of teh strokes. I was fucking enraged for teh rest of the day.

Forums: The Bar,

I have both their albums and think they're quite good. Not great favourites of mine, but nice modern rock.

well- i like them- & surely im not the only extremely intelligent person with enormously sophisticated taste in nz

obviously theyre not gonna be your cupatea saul

I'm on record as pro-strokes from day 3.

Albeit a little dissapointed with the second album.

Thats me...
And I like them, too.

It amazed me after hearing Is This It - that the strokes were pretty damn good indeed. I'm also a fan of the new album to a greater degree than most people. I've done a cover of 12:51 in true videogame-chip styling (and I'm thinking of doing a wee EP of strokes covers) - also there's a euro-disco pop ver of The Modern Age I have done a couple of bars of.

I'm a sucker for hooks and themes and they are one band who's got 'em. I think of their stuff as "video game music with guitars" to some degree, due to their bonehead, simple and catchy-as-all-hell sense of melody.

right on dude
thats exactly why i like the strokes
i also like how its basically one dudes song writing, ie julian casablancas but the band are still absolutely essential, (in my opinion bands are always essential to the core songwriter, keeping tabs on their 'preciousness' amongst other things (drinking buddies))
are they a band for girls?
i dont think so, and if they are, so what? what the fuck is a band for girls? surely a way to get laid more regularly, or possibly, less painfully, if one played in a band 'for boys'
2c

so vivid.......

//and I'm thinking of doing a wee EP of strokes covers

Please make them better than the Ryan Adams versions. I know I'm jumping on the "Who the fuck does Ryan Adams think he is the whiney shit" bandwagon, but the couple covers I heard by him were shithouse.

I think they are okay, but nothing really great. Just another rock n roll revival band... yawnnn

no, they aint, and that's the whole point. they actually do something different. you can tell because they are a band that has a whole heap of influences, even in the one song - a heap of "another rock revival" bands just have the one, dumb, obvious, not-even-stretched influence, and that's it.

the strokes appear to be both musical fans (hence the influences) and musicians (hence the evolution into something slightly new).

though i don't own anything by them, i do like them, and should i see one of their albums second-hand, i might buy it.

well, not i, i am gonna buy astriaal's nu album.

They have cool music, and the singers voice is really easy/pleasant to listen to.
Also I like it how their songs all tell stories that you can easily relate to.
At the moment I've been listening to hard to explain, what ever happened, reptillia, and under contol as they really tell the story of my life at the moment. Especially under control.
*sigh* ~emo moment alert.~

The Strokes are one of those bands where I forget how much I like them until I hear one of their songs.

Also, please stop writing "teh".

// stop writing teh //

faux writing disorder maybe?

// stop writing teh //

faux 'typing' disorder maybe?

//faux typing disorder perhaps//
yea or maybe he jus cant spell "the"

yeah, I type 'teh' on purpose. seriously, do not ever address me on this forum again.

The strokes are great cool fun music definitely a bunch of extremely talented guys, definitely not limited to girls liking them they are one of those bands girls want to do and guys want to be I seen them at BDO they were wicked and my guy friends got into it too

they can be as talented as they like, but their music doesn't do anything for me. Its dull and doesn't have near as many interesting melodies as say pantera or metallica. but then again, i like metal so my opionion about the strokes is always going to be a 'dull' comment. i like their random, 'dull' videos though, 'dull' but hip. 3.5c

you cant compare the strokes and metallica tho, cos they are in two completely diffrent genres of music :P

yes you can- the strokes are quite smart- & seem to have a natural ability to make music which falls on the right side of the golden rule- metallicker are a bunch of retards who have no concept of the golden rule- tho their cover of the prince was ok

aw, you dont even know.

metallica shit on the strokes

no they don't

hey lena, what is the golden rule?

She'll (he'll?) never tell you

Isn't it something about music relating to the head and the arse?

From what I've worked out there are two variations:

1) first there's a jab at the musical elitists: the best music appeals to the head, the heart and the *ahem* ass. Music that appeals to one or two of those is still ok just as long as the artist and the fans don't try and pretend it's something that it's not. music that just appeals to the head especially comes under fire because of all the fans insisting that it's superior to music that just appeals to the heart or the *ahem* ass.

2) golden ratio: most artists have written stuff that's brilliant, shit and mediocre. The best artists are the ones whose stuff is either brilliant or shit:
b 90%, m 0%, s 10% = good.
b 10% m 0% s 90% = good.

most artists go in this category or similar:
b 5% m 90% s 5% = crap.

Yeah, the Brilliant/Awful/Mediocre one was quite good I thought.

Now having golden rule is all very good but do all the members of the Lena collective agree on its application? It doesn't look that way.

the golden rule requires your own personal lena o to tell you what is b/m/s

thats not the golden rule- the golden rule explains what makes something brilliant mediocre or shit

The Strokes are great, although I hear they're a bit dull live ... but I wouldn't know anything about that unfortunately.

i thought they were boring live, and I'm a fan. I thought I was watching a band with my parents. Apparently sidestage converted non-fans. go figure.

saw them in nyny in 2000 & uk in 2001- great both times- smallish venues tho

I thought they were great at bdo - admittedly I'm a fan, but had gone expecting their too-cool-for-school/no-showmanship thing to make for a boring show, so was pleasantly suprised by the fun vibe. & they've had excellent reviews on their latest uk tour. I think there's a perception they're boring because they avoid all the sizzor kickin' flashy aspects of performance... guess I like my rock n'roll without the sweat & screaming.

I think the albums are full of catchy goodness and they write some 'nice' songs. Whether any of its relevant in 5 years time. Who knows?

I knew their live show was not very dynamic and went and checked them out at the BDO. Was kinda dissappointed very their performance. It was really sloppy. I guess after seeing The Mars Volta two days in a row you will have high expectations of a bands performance and musicianship.

I like that new song, the one where it has all those close up shots of them... not that I like the video or find my self attrated to them, I just like taht song.

other than that I like a couple of there songs, but not worth getting the ablums.

i think the fact that not many people like them makes me like them even more. I met them while they were in AKL for the BDO, really humble individuals. I say "bullocks" to those who say the strokes are arrogant. I think we should thank the strokes for bringing back the revival of the "THE........." bands.
