Now, say what you might, but some New Zealnd music is just fantastic, thanks in no small part to the return of Shayne Carter. But, over the past few months, even weeks, most it has been mediocre bilge that's already been done by Uncle Red, White and Blue (freestyle hip-hop, nu-metal, Pacifier)...so...is NZ music in better or worse shape? Is it as great as we think it is or is it no reason to give it it's own week? Is it cutting-edge or not cutting it at all?

O.K. So I have been a tad blindsided with the Shayne Carter thing. But, I dunno, I kinda liked "I Believe You Are A Star". Call me uninitiated. Call me weird. Call me...
Speaking of which, you knew Shayne Carter, oui?
//maybe its cos of that 1 night stand so many years ago-
And, I presume you are "carrying his child"?
Or is this another Soundgarden7 thing with the guy who pretended to be Andy from Zed?
It boggles indeed.
The mind, I mean.

dani, the datsuns got famous by inventing catchy hooks that stretch out for whole songs and practising them for years. Tom deborst is trying to be his brother, without the experience, the invention, the flair or the technical prowess. They even dress crap. Maybe in five or six years he'll approach some semblance of *coff* brilliance but right now his band is just like every other shitty school band jumping on the rock n roll bandwagon. The Have do a better job of ripping off the datsuns.
The checks are ok but they're still nowhere near the saviour of rock n roll. You need to get out more. Buy some old Straitjacket Fits albums. Shit, buy some old Dead Flowers albums. See Pacifier. Anything! Just snap out of it girl!

"The Have are less raw than the Datsuns." The Datsuns are raw?
"The Datsuns are 80's influenced."
"Electric shakedown rock the fuck out of all those other bands"
If I wasn't rolling around on the floor laughing I'd tell you both that you have zero discernment. I'd say the Datsuns aren't original, but their performance is watertight. Pacifier started sounding like a generic US rock band but their performance is still superlative. Electric Shakedown's performance is sloppy and shambolic. They're pretty new so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe after practising in front of undiscerning teen fangirls like you for a couple of years they'll tighten up and write a couple of catchy songs. The checks are pretty good, but they still lack performance experience. Regardless of whether you like sjf / pacifier / dead flowers / the clean / the skeptics / supergroove / split enz / hallelujah picassos / head like a hole or not, regardless of what scale of 'good' they are, there's no denying that they're all supremely better than electric fucking shakedown. Then I'd tell you to try setting your sights a bit higher, because you're an embarrasment to the kiwi music audience. But I'm too busy rolling around on the floor laughing, so I won't bother saying any of that.

Yeah I agree... there is lot of ...
Yeah I agree... there is lot of genuinely bad generic music being granted music video money from NZ on Air. There's a lot of innovative and even pleasant sounding music that is around, like perhaps Pluto, The Black Seeds, Confuscious (sp?). However it probably all goes down to personal taste - and we'll all be forever arguing if people say certain music is bad and another particular band/style is good... music's only good or bad if you personally like or dislike it. But one thing I think you can attack a particular band for is how generic they sound because this is less up to opinion and more down to fact.

yeah but if every thread on here didnt involve personal opinion, we'd have no discussion. We'd have people saying THING THING THING FACT ONE BLAH BLAH but then no one would want to participate. And when people aren't participating and saying STUPID things, then the moaners and bitchers dont participate because they cant attack the other users. Its like a chain reaction thing.

I've been steadily observing this topic and I must say that I have been intrigued by the comments. This is my first topic, see.
I formed this so that I could see what people thought of the mediocrity, or otherwise, of NZ music and all I have seen is how many people like to whinge and moan about Falter (who I think are pretty darn fine) and The Datsuns (who are pure and utter Strokes/Ramones/Hives wannabes. That said, we are such a small country that all we can do is imitate other countries styles, save for a few artists and bands who have managed dto create an all new sound. It's the only way that this industry survives.
There is no such thing as originality.
The US took care of that long ago.
And listen to Bjork. Listen to her alot. She is a true original.

Try listening to something that's not on a major label - there's a whole world of music, nz & not, that you've not yet discovered.
//there's a whole world of music, nz & ...
//there's a whole world of music, nz & not, that you've not yet discovered.
I thought that I had said that. There are the blessed few that are true originals. One of my faves is Bjork, Icelandic artiste extrrrrraordinaire.
But the better part of it, NZ or not, is pure, utter, I'm-K-Lee-or-Adeaze-trying-to-be-cool-and-original-when-I'm-just-the-same-as-those-other-pop-wannabe-princesses/princes.
Just a point trying to be made.
//There are the blessed few that are ...
//There are the blessed few that are true originals
but that's just not true. my point is that for every klee there's a dozen artists that are "true originals" & worth checking out - & the majority you won't find in rollling stone or on a major label. Try these websites (for a start) & I think you'll be suprised at the amount of great music:
http://pitchforkmedia.com/
http://www.epitonic.com/
or just go through the mp3s on this site/smokecds.com/noizyland.com/amplifier.co.nz - nz has loads of innovative, cutting edge music.
I'm not meaning to be snarky, I just get a little pissy when people complain about the lack of good music when in reality it's just a matter of taking the time to look for it.
I'll keep my comments to the music I ...
I'll keep my comments to the music I listen to most (to try and stop me saying mean and nasty things about the bands that get the majority of the very little media attention available to NZ bands).... but there are some VERY good, original/exciting metal bands in NZ at the moment.
Dawn of Azazel - just released 'The Law of the Strong' which is pure brutality on CD, turn it up REAL loud and it will destroy anything within earshot... and they are about to embark on a European tour thanks to the Polish label who picked them up after the earlier demo and 7" releases... They describe their style as 'Militant Audio Apocalypse' which seems about right, they mix black/death/grind/power influences to create some pretty original music... oh yeah, you mar well have seen their video for Immortal Dominance' on C4 (as well as appearing on C4 and Juice in person)... http://dawnofazazel.orcon.net.nz
Ulcerate - Perhaps fitting more under exciting than 'original'... an extreme death/grind band who don't make you think "hey, they're trying to be 'Famous International Band X'" - you're more likely to think "these guys are every bit as good/better than 'Famous International Band X'" - combining great songwriting with some jaw dropping musicianship (their drummer Jamie is phenomenal... and he's only getting better too) these guys will have to be picked up by an overseas label (if there is ANY justice in this world)... http://ulcerate.orcon.net.nz
Backyard Burial - They refer to themselves as Lower Hutt Grind Scum... which fits them perfectly. They play a mixture of grind and death, with a downtuned 'groovier' feel... easily my favourite New Zealand band for their mixture of crazily heavy hooks, monster riffage, great vocals (you may remember Matt, their vocalist, from the cover of HLAH's 'Blood on the Honky Tonk Floor' album and poetic song titles (you just try and beat "You've got tourettes syndrome," "If it came down to it I'd eat you" or "Masturbation over catholic bitch" - pure class...
I think I might just list a few other NZ metal bands who are making music worth listening to... rather than turning this post into an all out epic... Graymalkin, Aphelon, Forced to Submit, Skuldom, Corpsefeast... the list could continue but I think you'll get the idea - NZ is producing some fantastic metal and our ability to churn out crap retro-rockers and dumbed down pop drivel shouldn't sully the good name of NZ music...
p.s. i'm just using metal as an example as it's what i listen to most... but there is also some fantastic original/interesting/exciting music in many other genres around too...
