in a follow up to Tonikins post - http://www.nzmusic.com/topic.cfm?i=1495&show=&start=561&1=2#post154414 i was wondering if Those Full-School Singing assemblys are still going??
back in the day our form 1 teacher graded us on our Singing ability at our weekly form singing instruction and reading my old form 1 end of year report it states "....committed to singing classes and enjoys singing with Gusto".
back then we had to sing stuff like MORE THAN WORDS, HEY MONA, LISTEN TO THE RYTHYM OF THE POURING RAIN, WHEN IM 64, and some Maori songs that i cant remember the names to (only the words).
of course the fun in it all was when we had to sing a song we never liked, wed alter the lyrics and make them into funny words ie. Heart became Fart....etc.
but seriously what did everybody think of it?

I hated assembly singing at primary school, didn't like the songs we had to sing, so I sang flat on purpose (couldn't really help it, because other kids beside me were out of tune anyway) with alternative lyrics

One year my music teacher decided we'd sing Imagine, but one of the christian students complained because of words like "imagine there's no heaven" etc...
So my teacher changed the words. Instead we sung "imagine there's a heaven"..etc. Problem is, not only was it kinda more offensive than originally, but it didn't even make any sense - "imagine there's (a) heaven, it's easy if you try, (a) hell below us, and above us only sky...?"

It's funny but should I happen to hear We are the world, (Take me home) Country roads, Mull of Kintyre, The theme from M.A.S.H. and one or two other songs I find myself singing along as if I were right back in Form 1/ 2.

Yeah, Hutt Intermediate really did some shockers. They tried to be cool by making us sing all the up to date pop songs that I hated with a vengeance, Spice Girls anyone? *shudder*
Apparently when my sister was there they did under the bridge for a while, but stopped when somebody realised it was about suicide.

True. Now i think about it I've always associated the lyrics with drugs, but the banning of it being sung in assembly with suicide. Not quite sure how that works. I guess I was five to six when my sister was in intermediate.

thats stupid, the song has got nothing to with suicide, its about one of Anthony's lowest points of his life when he went down to a drug HQ that was underneath a bridge in LA which sold hard drug & that he'll never go there again. He wasn't trying to kill himself

//the song has got nothing to with suicide
Yes I know. I am just confronted with two different bits of knowledge/memory that are floating around in my head. On the one hand I know the song is about Anthony shooting up, but on the other hand I have a series of memories, from different years, in which my sister tells me about how the song was sung in assemblies until the teachers stopped it because it was about suicide. Don't know if my sister's wrong or if the teachers were, I'm pretty sure the memories right though, it's one of those anecdotes that have been repeated through time and I have a pretty decent memory.
