Which is the best city in NZ?

Which is the best city (city, town, village, whatever) in NZ?
I'm planning to go there, and I would like to stay in NZ for some months (2004 or 2005). It depends of my wallet (dont worry, I'm planning to rob a bank covering my face with a GWBush's mask) and of my work (I will bribe to my workmates). So, I would like to know ur opinions (pros and cons). I know is a hot question, ... rivalry between cities is really funny. Actually, I live in a city of 100,000 people.
I need: cultural life, bars and music, nature, sea (ironic), and obviously, a english institute.
btw, if somebody wanna help me with your advices, u can add me, MSN or Yahoo (have a look in my profile). I would be grateful for that.
tnx in advance

ps: I'm neither a motherfucker nor a psychokiller

Forums: The Bar,

Auckland of course! You should goto "the globe"

Cool

YAY for Auckland!!!

I may show a bias but i would say Wellingtons the hub of creative culture in New Zealand, plus for a large city (the greater wellington region has about 440,000 people) you can travel around it easy, most places can be walked to and the public transport is tops.

We have multiple venues, a friendlier class of people, no traffic problems...

im a fan

yes wellington
go there. its an awesome place for art and music and everything else.

It's cool if you like wearing brown and growing a beard.

- nah that sounds more like Dunedin style

wgtn certainly is a great place (being home and that) even some of the more run-down "shit-all-to-do" suburbs such as Porirua and Upper Hutt offer things to do - Beaches, Rivers, Lots of Tramping and affordable Pubs and restaurants, take one word of warning. The weather is so changeable and esp. if your in the valleys Nights can be freezing in winter, Days Extremely hot in Summer, and rainfall can get fairly heavy all year round. Mt. Climie some 40km from the centre of town is an ideal tramping spot after a dumping of snow in the winter.

I'd go with Wellington. The city is compact making it easy walking and public transport is pretty reliable. Lots of venues, variety of shops, nice views, cool people, and the sky is currently a very pretty blue. Weather can be a bit unpredictable but as long as you remember to wear layers you'll be sweet.

//sounds more like Dunedin style

nah. Welly is brown, Dunners is black. but without the beard, though. "must look like choirboy/girl (need not act like said choirperson), and dress in black".

Auckland. No contest.

you are a FOOL.

i agree

Auckland does has it good and bad points like any other city

Duners of course or Dunedin if we are getting formal on it. Everyone down here is do damn friendly and easy going heaps of fun things to do and music cultrure not a bit city but a good one all the same. Must say I notice the difererence in people attitude (and not in a good way) the further north I go,

and the nature too - we got the Peninsula! rock on!

We have great nature, the peninsula, the beaches oh the bliss of small town city living in good old dunners

i would say that after 4 years away from NZ that in fact almost every city i have been to so far on my holiday has been great: AKL is big n buzzy, but not too big and not too cool for school. you still need ac r to get around though. Wellington is fun and compact and a hedonist paradise, but the weather is still rubbish. CHCH ssems to have grown and matured beyond my possible imaginings and Dunedin is just so brilliant, creative, together and fun. Hamiltons rock scene is fantastic.

rotovegas has to be my top town at the moment (slight sulphar odour but you quickly get used to it.)

also Jerusalem outta wanganui - fmr home of author and hippie prophet James K. Baxter

if you want to get all small town on it try mahia
up the top of hawksbay

Oh man. The Mahia peninsula is so cool. I'm with you pal.

are you crazy sam??
theres no real music scene happening here, after 2 years you run out of things to do and we have about 5 really good artists.

the music scene is just a tiny part of rotorua, theres that Maori Village place, that village that was buried by that volcano, the lakes, the Hotpools and Geysers....man rotorua has heaps to do.

for tourists yes, for locals its rather the opposite way around

oooo - mahia is the place... it has something very special about it... and its not far away from waikaremoana - wow

waikaremoana- that place sends shivers down my spine.
beautiful

Wellington and Dunedin are both great places with plenty to do and friendly people ... I'd say these two places are the pick of NZ.

whichever city im in- pity im in wyoming at the mo

pity you're not.

ah piddy tha po fool city yo in

...

TNXS A LOT TO EVERYBODY!
Its a hard choice, ... I will think about ur proposals/advices, really useful.
Im also getting information about those cities.

Thank you !

*hangover*

Personally, i think this is a stupid fucking question. If you want nice scenery, go to queestown. If you want a lot of music, Auckland or Wellington. I think re-phrasing the question would be a good idea.

//If you want nice scenery, go to queestown.

queenstown has too many pine trees. if you want nice scenery, go to central, but avoid queenstown.

//Personally, i think this is a stupid fucking question.
Personally, I think that is a wrong opinion, and those adjectives are inadequates

//If you want nice scenery, go to queestown. If you want a lot of music, Auckland or Wellington.
I think that is a right reply, a positive answer, probably because you get what I mean in my post. Thank you.

//I think re-phrasing the question would be a good idea
Do u need it really?

*a word to the wise is sufficient*

Thank everybody, sincerely. I’m having note, your opinions are welcome. :)

//rivalry between cities is really funny
I was right

ITS GOT TO BE AUCKLAND..WHY? BECAUSE WE ARE THE CAPITAL OF NZ WITHOUT A DOUBT.
(SORRY! BUT ITS TRUE..of course everywhere else is cool..just a little bit too quiet & not so ravish).

wellington is the capital of new zealand sweetheart

I wasn't born in Australia!!

Auckland is the concrete jungle of NZ,

Well, if you like to put it that it that way..dont ever come here for anything!

Auckland is the concrete jungle of NZ

dont ever come here for anything!
oooh, touchy. and may I add "SORRY! BUT ITS TRUE"

I wasn't born in Australia!!
I'm still trying to figure out what you mean by that. I thought samflux had a valid point - Wellington is the capital of NZ, not Auckland - what has you not being born in Australia got to do with it?

you know.. I come to Auckland all the time, usually because thats where the international bands/bdo is. But it is cute how passionate you are about the place. It's still a concrete jungle.

//Well, if you like to put it that it that way..dont ever come here for anything!

im sure you make your auckland comrades proud - given your stunning word smithing skills, faultless logic and untouchable knowledge of new zealand geography

I know Wellington is the capital..if I may add Auckland is the capital for everything when it comes to events etc..being born in Australia just points out that I sooooo know the capital & if anyone was reading it wouldn't it have been ever so figurative (i mean c'mon..common sense)..Just being proud thats all & also I love Auckland..to me its the shit..I do love other places but for events & giving sly eyes..you've got to hand it over to Aucks.
Sorry if I offended Wellingtonians..all good.

Wellington Wellington Wellington, oh how I love my precious Wellington. Where the sun shines sometimes and the birds sing about $3 Indigo happy hour. Cuba street is alive with smiley look you in the eye types and you only need meet one person, for they tell a friend, and they tell a friend and soon you are popular in all walks of life.
Wellington (sigh)

Ar har har har. $3 happy hour.... can I ask what you get for this pittance?

//can I ask what you get for this pittance?

drunk

//Wellington, wellington, wellington...

Thats real o'some how we all like to think of our area as the best city in kiwi land.
Where eva you live in NZ its the best part & contributes to who you are as a person. Christchurch is absolutely lovely, Wellington a bit quiet in the town & perhaps a little too political airwave feelings when there but still I must say Auckland is the bomb...MANUKAU is even better..

//$3 happy hour
Anyone remember the 10 cent pints up at the Trust?

10 cent pints? Where is this magical place? Faerie Land? Is everything made of chocolate including the dogs that skip through the streets just waiting to be bitten?
