I've come to the unfortunate realisation that almost all NZ music cds that I own (20+), I didn't buy. A large number of them were promos or gifts, and the rest I can't remember where they came from. The last NZ music cd that I can remember buying was 'Riverhead', but that was for my sister.
I suck. I pretend to be all "Yay NZ music!" and I don't burn them, but I don't buy them either. However, I do go to gigs, and that's where they make more money, right?
As far as "Yay NZ music" is concerned, I reckon it's just as much about your family / friends going birthday shopping and thinking "ah, Joanna's always talking about that band - I'll get that CD for her". You don't have to pour your wallet into a band to support them.
Of course, if you can't buy kiwi music because you spend your gargantuan paycheque on dozens and dozens of international artists, then that's a different story...
Oh I don't buy foreign music either. I got too used to getting free shit in my last job, so now if I have to pay for cds or movie tickets or books, I just don't. My "gargantuan" paycheque mostly goes on liquor - NZ wine but foreign vodka. I really should start buying 42 below. Or maybe Kristov. Ick. However, this poll has shamed me and I hearby promise that as soon as I get my comissions pay, I will go and buy the nz cds that I have been meaning to buy for ages (Collider, Horse Power, Shihad Live).
PS: Birthday gifts are always the result of A Very Extensive Birthday Wish List written and distributed on May 17th, exactly one month before my birthday, broken down into price categories and suggested colours. I like to be helpful.
PPS: my current fav NZ cd is Tali. Yay Tali. Even though I got it for free.
Young Lash sorted our collection the other day, she was surpised to find that we now have round 120, and we think our collection is small.
interestingly enough we are still running at 95% NZM........... there is just too much music out there to try and keep up with it all, so we are staying local, still so many bands yet unheard
and as for did we buy or get given......... mostly buy but our got given list is growing
Blink did an audit of our collection......... he says it's only 75%.......... I feel shame.
but 25% of our music Dvds are nz, I'm looking forward to the flying nun dvd coming out.
haha jimi, i feel your pain, i have 2 cd wallets with 40 cds apiece of stuff i could happily live without, and another 40cd wallet with the stuff that barely makes it into my playlists, maybe once every couple of months :) then i've got the "regular semi-favourite picks" cd shelves, and finally my revered picks, the top shelf, containing all of my favourite bands, their spinoffs and other projects, and my entire nz music collection, of which there are probably around 40-50 cd's, though that's an estimate.
i used to be a completist, so i would go out of my way to get everything by a band i liked, but then i realised that if you have everything then there's nothing to look forward to, now i have intentional gaps, it seems to keep me enthused :)

got sick of crouching over cd shelf so no ratio available
what about the high rotate? that's a far smaller pile - and it's normally say 9 out of 10 nz (still stuck on the flaming lips, and grandaddy)
Interesting to read the posts.
I'd say half of my collection is NZ, though I am now in Oz.
In support of my fave. Kiwi Artists I have been making some Aussie's listen to them on high rotate..hehe
Death Machine- Not really. Crowded House & Split Enz of course (often claimed as Aussie Bands), on Triple J (non commercial station) I have heard them play Betchadupa, Datsuns, Pacifier & Fur Patrol etc.
I'd be better if more NZ music was accesable here. I think you an buy the odd CD off the shelf but not many.
see the button 'reply to post'... push that. it saves making new posts. start your own record shop. with shitloads more nz music in there. ill submit my bands cd's!
Thanks for the info re 'reply to post'.
Good idea to start a record shop...though I may have to start a radio station or music TV show too, so that Aussie's would hear the music & know to buy it.
What type of music does your band play?
approx. 130-150 CDs, 170-180 lps.. NZ stuff makes up about 30% of my total collection, but then i have an NZ music radio show down here in christchurch..
i sort into international, various and NZ. If I ever actually tidied up, they'd be alphabetical within those catergories, except of course that I do each artist chronologically.
i've been sorting my vinyl by genre recently, Cd's i haven't gotten around to, but i do keep a list on my computer of all Cds and records i own for insurance purposes....
i probably have about 5% new zealand cd's and about 1% NZ records, due to
a) I buy most of my Cds from bargain bins or second hand (fuck spending 35 bucks on an album)
b) most of my vinyl is either electronic stuff (and i don't like most of the kiwi stuff, even if it is available on vinyl) or classic rock and indie
c) i rarely buy kiwi albums from stores, usually i buy Cds at gigs - i have quite a few self released ones by local bands. ..
d) because there are many good overseas bands who deserve my support just as much as the locals
me four.. its easier when selecting material for my radio show that way! i've been looking at tapes recently - as theres a lot of older collectable stuff that only came out on home-taped release
I have so much American junk thats just the shit to me..but kiwi? Well..

I have about 35 NZ CDs out of about 250total.
Nice work Joanna! The sad truth is that bands hardly cover their rehersal room & battery costs with gig money... gigging is a way for a band to create a stir and get recognised. A little of their money comes from CDs, but most of it comes from crappy day jobs.
I think being pro NZ Music isn't just about buying every NZ music CD that gets releassed. Its about going to gigs, buying the CDs if they're good. No point supporting the untallented ones else they'll get signed and we'll all end up having to listen to them.
