My pick has to go to 'Crossword' by Tim Finn. I think it's off the Split Enz album Dyzrythmia. When I'm commuting across town I often find myself contemplating how anyone could have been inspired to record and release such an ill concieved no brainer. The lyric "Crossword, Crossword...your down, I'm across" plagues my mind.
I haven't actually heard the original version...hmm...but i do like AAF's version a whole lot better, very awesome live. I gotta say, i'm a big M.J fan...."it's ok, i don't believe a word they say, Michael"
But here's a random example of a really bad song: Cambridge by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. If half-an-hour of screaming over guitar feedback is your bag, you'll love it. The two also "wrote" a song called Two Minute's Silence. The title says it all.
I wonder how it stacks up against John Cage's composition "4'33." . Recently british composer Mike Batt found himself in a legal battle over a composition called "One Minute Of Silence" that appeared on an album by his band, The Planets. Batt was being sued by representatives of the John Cage estate, who claim that "One Minute Of Silence" sounds suspiciously like Cage's 1952 composition.
Shit, 'Cambridge' sounds much more my bag than rubbish like 'Starting Over'...
Isn't the Cage track not silence but 4min 33 in which the performers try not to make any noise? Big, big difference, to my mind.
I've seen a few people have recorded 4'33", including Frank Zappa. I always wondered whether they followed that idea, ie. set up mics and got all their instruments ready and then tried to be real quiet... it still wouldn't really work in a studio, but it'd be better than a blank track on a CD. Hmm.
I thought it was about getting past what the performer was doing and turning it onto the sounds of the audience and environment, the music of everyday life.
shit theres so many but ill list just a portion of 'em

//I was unaware. Do these people write their own songs?
You're either incredibly naive (our of their own vanity they're going to write at least a few of their own songs) or taking the piss again. Either way, it's no wonder people aren't always terribly polite toward you.
Ditto, making it odd that we're arguing about this at all. However, if you have no knowledge of their careers, why bother making your initial comment at all? Hence, my impression that you were taking the piss.
Of course! We will only shop in boutiques and drink Veuve Cliquoe (or however you spell it, it's something similar). Perhaps we will have wine tastings and cheese nights. Our clique is very refined and very excellent.
Congratulations Limegreen, your clique so far numbers Heather and Joanna.
//Ditto, making it odd that we're arguing about this at all. However, if you have no knowledge of their careers, why bother making your initial comment at all?
I'm not sure if that is a question that needed asking. My comment was:
//I was unaware. Do these people even write their own songs?
So obviously the reason I asked was not that I was taking the piss, It's that as I said "I was unaware".
The reason I 'bothered' making the initial comment 'at all' is because I wanted to know. This is a music website, I simply asked for some information about music. Is it standard practise to asume everyone who is unaware and requires information is either 'taking the piss' or 'naive'? (yes, that is also a question, not a comment as such) .
The reason I asked this question is I was wondering if Lucifer_Sam hates all songs performed by these artists, or just the ones 'written' by them. Streuth mate, I realise your probably more probably more classy than me with your boutiques and whatever, but I was just curious. I guess just caught you at a bad time.
No, you're just paranoid, I didn't say it like it's a bad thing, it's an adjective which you can interpret as you see fit. Not everyone's out to get you Joanna.
