While they're not online, I've just been told that The CD Store (and planetjack.com) contributes to both the Maxim Institute and the anti Civil Unions bill, so they're never ever ever going to get another cent out of me again.
the owners are christians. I worked for them for a while - seemed like really nice guys at first, but soon realised they treat their staff poorly, + they irritated the fuck outta me with questions about my 'spiritual' life. smokecds all the way.
Okay, I should have said "the news reporter who attended Tim Barnett's presentation about the Civil Unions Bill came back and informed me" rather than "i've just been told". I'm rather inclined to believe what he has to say, even though quite obviously he has an agenda of his own.
Seriously, though, if this is true, I think everyone out there seriously needs to think about boycotting both outlets. The Maxim Institute are a (very nasty) neo-conservative interest group determined to reduce New Zealand to the worst excesses of the Bush adminstration over in the US's fundamentalism. I'm a straight and narrow, lawabiding citizen, but if I ever find myself outside their HQ, I'm gonna do my best to trash the place.
That said, realgroovy.co.nz got my vote. Admittedly, their prices arent the best (though hardly the worst), but recently I've bought Minor Threat, Rites of Spring, X, and Mekons CDs that would be nigh-on bloody impossible to get in the country. Free shipping too, and I've been getting these albums from god-knows-where...
I order from overseas, Im impatient and can't wait 3-6 months for bands to trickle down to this part of the world. Brooke Fraser is just having her songs released in Australia now (her album came out late last year) and Pete Murray and Jet from Australia both released mid to late last year, and only get here in the last few months - and then RIANZ wonder why people download music off the internet!
I know that for a fact Real groovy Records are the shizzz.
They have been there since forever, My mum who is 60 something was looking all over the net for a favorite oldie goldie and she found all she wanted on Real Groovy.
Thanx heaps Groovy, you just made my mum the happiest old goat ever.....
its planetjack.com by far best delivery its free in NZ and cheapest CDs from 5 -7 dollars cheaper than soundz most times its where i get all my music from soundz is good but u gota pay for delivery but they are usually priced cheaper online so wen u pay for delivery its around the same price as going to the store to buy it, but for me planetjack is the only way to go pitty there website is down at the moment haha
if u go to mtv.com like i did u would hear about bands like dashboard confessional who have only just come out in NZ with that one song vindicated ive known about that song for like 6 months now, New found glory, Taking back sunday and story of the year all awesome punk rock bands but coz NZ is so for away we either are realyl slow getting them or neva do, im the only person i no of who has heard or Hot Action Cop, and most of the above bands i have already mentioned,
I know this may not appeal to many of you .. especially when you see the prices .. they'll be in english pounds, which at todays exchange rate is $2.73 NZ to £1 pom. but if you want to check out the stock at this site, it's very eclectic .. with some hard to find vinyl and CD's... and alot of non mainstream artists... I was given a CD from a friend of mine who was in a band in the 70's and when I thought I'd buy it for a couple of mates .. this was the only place I found it .. ( it's JADE, Fly on strangewings .. incase your interested .. VERY early 70's ) it's www.freakemporium.com .. they send out a monthly news letter even if you don't want to buy.
How can this be the best online music store? it isn't even online anymore!!! Best online store if you have broadband internet is www.digirama.co.nz pay per download of albums, or just the songs you want from an album.
why not amplifier.co.nz for your download needs? heaps more nz music.
I mean, digirama seems to be nothing more than a limited front-end for Warners catalogue stuff. Check out the top 10 albums in NZ as of now. How many can you get from digirama...?
1. Greatest Hits - Robbie Williams - NO
2. Magic City - P-Money - YES*
3. What To Do With Daylight - Brooke Fraser - NO
4. 10 Years Of Hits - Ronan Keating - NO
5. American Idiot - Green Day - PARTIAL
6. Into The West - Yulia - NO
7. Story So Far: The Very Best Of Rod Stewart - PARTIAL
8. Greatest Hits Vol 1 - KoRn - NO
9. Songs About Jane - Maroon 5 - NO
10. Everyone Is Here - The Finn Brothers - NO
So, only one album in the top 10, and that one you can't even download individual tracks from - you have to get the whole thing or nothing. Only two other albyms in the top 10 appear, and then only partially (5 tracks from the Green Day album, 3 from the Rod Stewart).
Ugh, and just spotted this...
"All songs downloaded from digiRAMA are 128kbps WMA (Windows Media Audio) format which offers superior sound quality and a small file size."
Superior sound quality compared to a 64kbps WMA file, but little else...
Was it digirama that got a big free plug on the news the other day? I'm not usually much of a tv-yeller, but I was kinda like, how the hell come they get promo-ed like they're doing something new and revolutionary....
It may have been because it's the 1st online music store in NZ selling mainstream protected content. The kind of online store that australia has had several of for over a year. Not the kind of online store that amplifier is, which is basically selling CD's & a few indie downloads (in unprotected mp3 format!)
I'm all for it, got to start somewhere. Kazaa's turned to shite, i love downloading 15 minutes of silence don't you.
Oh, and just a quick point about WMA's; the WMA encoder is indeed better than the old technology used in MP3 encoding. So a 128kbps encoded WMA will sound better than a 128kbps encoded MP3 file (even if the average joe can't hear the difference). Also, your standard 3:30ish minute song in MP3 is around 5MB but the same song in WMA is 3MB.... wow what's up with that?
The newer WMA encoders are improving, but so are others. New WMA will beat old mp3 as you point out, but new WMA and new mp3 is a much closer call. Personally, I'd rather avoid WMA as I think it will eventually become another tool for microsoft dominance.
Yes i agree, there's a similar issue with Apple's AAC format and their 'fairplay' protection system only allowing transfer to iPods. Looks like the music format wars will come to a head at some stage like good old VHS & beta. Who will win!?
