The Quiet Earth

Who's seen this movie? NZ film from 85 or 87...Bwuno Lawrence stars. It is damn cool. But I'm still attempting to nail an explanation for the ending (spoiler alert!) - does he blow himself up at that particular moment knowing that he'll be the only one left after the effect? Is this because he figures it would be more fulfilling to be 'God' than live an existence of rejection with the other two?

What was almost cooler than the movie though, was the fact I got to see heaps of TVOne advertisments from the decade that style forgot. Like the full anthem version of TVOnes promo clip and then it flicking over to National Radio after the movie had finished. Classic.

Forums: The Bar,

yeah man... cool flick... but i dont think the ending has any deep meaning... its just ment to bend your brain... and make you go "what the?' ..

Okaaaay Honey...
...It has deep meaning, it does bend your brain a lot..and you are so boggled you go "WTF".

The film screens on Maori Television at 9:30 tonight.

love this film but loaned it to a girl who took it back to timaru, 2 years ago and she always forgets to return it!!!

saw this when i was a kid with my parents and it did fuck with my brain a bit...I always thought everyone had disappeared because of something done at the plant bruno lawrence was working at hence he was killing himself at the start to survive? Then at the end he reversed the effect by blowing stuff up...hence he died and everyone was brought back to earth and at the point of his death he was sent somewhere else...I could be majorly wrong on this as i was about 5 at the time and my folks wouldn't let me watch the rude bits...

I can't remember when or why I saw this movie, but I know I have (and remember it pretty darn well, in fact).

BUUUT ... it can't be a case of him killing nearly everyone except himself - otherwise, where have all the dead bodies gone?

Not that I have an explanation, but my whacked out theory is that maybe he sent himself to another dimension with about 20 other people ... and his actions at the end of the film do the same except he's now all by himself ... or else they send the others apart from him back ...

Don't know about the rest of you but they made us watch it in school.

hmmm i always thought it was because at the point when he woke up everybody in the world had passed over to some alternative universe: the energy field tapped into some sort of cosmic portal and took everyone away, except those at the point of death. So, at the end, he was passing over into ANOTHER alternative universe in a vain attempt to send his buddies through to that alternate universe and then they could have babies n stuff cos BL is such an old growler

Yeah, I think that's kinda what I was trying to say ...

Someone should bring it out on DVD ... I'd buy it!

such a great film - i think there are a lot of people who saw it when they were 15 or so - it seems to be one of those flicks that defines my generation - like that screening of 'Alien' - so many people my age just happened to be staying up late watching tele with their dads on that one night - those two films had such an impact on nubile young kiwi brains across the country.

at school we were forced to watch 'Mr Wrong' - a kiwi film which wasn't so good, certainly not in the same ballpark as Quiet Earth.

i'm real keen to see it again, cos my impression wasn't about dimensions or anything - i thought it was about power grids altering physical things - but then again, when i taped it, the tape ran out just before that amazing last shot, which i only know about cos i've seen stills of it.

i'm thinking it must be in the video library at uni, eh jimi? so cool to watch them old tapes and see crazy arsed old advertisements, Philip Sherry eyebrows, etc ...

I blame on the honkeys!!!

Yeah it's in the AV centre cleanie. Go and view it, and get back to me!

As the minutes move by, I'm wanting to have a second screening by myself in a dark room more and more. Just thinking, some of the special effects are really professional and shutting down parts of the city would have taken a lot of time = money. Anyone remember it being made? Was there much hoopla about it? Must have had a big budget, especially for mid 80's NZ cinema...

It might the the most visually effective NZ film made? Those empty street shots are great ... and how bout when he goes psycho and creates an army made out of mannequins or cardboard cut out people (can't remember which) ...

Yeah, saw it again today and agree. It still looks futuristic in places which is a feat when you consider it was made in '85, the year it was taped off Channel One was '93 and there were ads for cellphones far bigger than my current cordless. And they cost $1300. Hahahahahaha.

Does anyone know where the female lead from the film is now?

I saw it when it first came out and it freaked me out, for I was only a little girl.

Seeing now as a grown up, my favourite part is seeing Garden Place and Alexandra Street in Hamilton. As well as being a reminder of Hamilton in the mid-'80s, it's also funny because the bare, abandoned square and street shown in the film is pretty much how Hamilton looked on Sundays, anyway.

seems a few people have a hazy memory on how bruno got into his quiet earth.. and as they made us study it at film school i try to fill the blanks...

as the universe ended bruno was tying to kill himself... and so were the two other people he meets later... somehow this reversed the effects and they was left alive...

as for the ending... dont think too hard because i think you might explode and end up on that weird planet with bruno .. hey wow - now that would be weird

//bruno was tying to kill himself... and so were the two other people he meets later...

Well, y'know, sam, not to be pedantic or anything, but - the other two were being electrocuted and drowned involuntarily - muhahaha

oh yeah arg... seems im a bit hazy too .. dammit
