OI! Bass Players!

Instead of buying a set of strings - I was going to be cheap and try boiling them first. Who has done it? What do you do? I would imagine that the strings would have a short life post a boiling escapade...rust problems?

Anyway...perhaps i should just fork out the cash and buy some more - I'm just interested to know if it works.

Forums: The Bar,

yeah, boiling them up works a treat. just pop 'em in the pot, wait a few minutes for the accumulated weeks of finger-scum to detach itself from the coils and rise to the top of the water, and there you go. let them cool down, string 'em back on, and you'll have some lovely fresh sounding strings.

I'm picking more like three years, eh Ralphie. Also I thought the fire dept banned you from all appliances.

cher noizy.

pissy-they didn't "ban" me from appliances - just from fireworks after the bedroom incident.

aww she's a firecracker that one!

hmm I'm guessing since there are four replies at least already, you have your answer.

yes boiling works, but give them plenty of time to dry and cool. The bright sound will ware off a lot quicker than new strings.

is this guitar strings as well or just bass strings

They will rust if you don't dry them properly afterwards - so lie them on some towels, go at them with a hair dryer, spray them with some CRC or WD40 and wipe them down.
Adding some vinegar to the water when you boil them helps lift the oils from the winding grooves too.
