The Mint Chicks, Die! Die! Die! And Disasteradio
5/2/04
Bodega
Playing his familiar quirky electro-pop to maybe two hundred people at Bodega, Disasteradio was in his element. With a hollow artificial drumbeat and his Korg booming out synth gems, this seemed to earn him applause at any break in his set. his last song was so damn robotic I wished with all my heart that I had hung out with the hommies back in fourth form, because then I’d be able to robot dance…
Die! Die! Die! were next. I wrote intense down so many times on my notebook describing them and that’s an apt description of the band. As with every performance I’ve seen their drummer play, he looked like he was having a seizure, he was drumming so much passion. Sounding like they’ve been weaned on the Manchester punk scene, they came out with a scream and a strong conviction, relayed through their music. Not many bands I’ve seen recently manage to do this.
Next up were The Mint Chicks. With their trademark stuttering guitar and the lead singer wound inseparably around the microphone stand, they started up one of the most tightest and energetic mosh pit’s I’ve had the misfortune of being caught in for quite a while. There were even multiple crowd surfers (not something you often see at bodega…). During all this mayhem the band continued without missing a beat. What is really impressive about The Mint Chick’s take on their manic style of punk rock, is that they keep in time, no matter what’s happening. With the line between the crowd and the stage disappearing and the lead singer imploring the crowd to move back, I knew it’d had been a good gig.
