It could have been shot anywhere, though ... I've been non-plussed by the whole LOTR thing - I have to admit I haven't seen any though, not really my sort of movie. But why has there been all this carry on about the oscars? Who cares how many awards or whatever it wins - if you had a good time going to it, and the people had fun making it, isn't that all that matters?

of course....my above thread was not directed for LOTR, it was directed at New Zealand - the moral of the story, even something so small can acheive something so big, as for LOTR i reckon its so majorly over-rated, anyway i couldnt understand why they blocked off half of wgtn for it and took up 45 minutes of a 1 hour new bulletin dedicated towards it, it would be a diffferent story if something tragic (ie. sir edmund hillary passing on) happened, obviously thats what my thrad meant, no matter how small u are, the big opportunities can be reached and attained. and of course peter jackson has some other cool movies (heavanly creatures, braindead), i was marely congratulating him for being a kiwi rather than LOTR

Well samflux, I haven't seen the movies, but I think I'm still allowed an opinion on whether there has been too much media coverage of the whole oscar awards stuff ... which is after all what this thread is about! I got no beef with the movies winning any awards, like I said, just not my thing ... and good on Peter Jackson for taking out best director!
But unless you come up with a better arguement than you don't like my comments then I still think there's been too much media fuss, and as a side note I'm not convinced the oscars are the be all and end all of film making ...

Yeah, but has winning the oscars had that much influence on money being spent on future NZ films or more films being shot in NZ? I dunno, I think LOTR would have made more of an impact by its huge gross or great reviews ...

Is that sarcasm? Please let it be sarcasm. Why wouldn't you want recognition from your peers, a ticket to do the job you loved however you wanted it, and gratification for a job well done as well as increased financial rewards and the chance to become a role model for thousands of other people?

Why would I want those things? I just think the LOTR films have achieved most of those aims anyway, 11 Oscars or none at all ... it's obvious people enjoyed it, I'm sure everyone involved will have offers of work ... and they are clearly role models (look at all the toys, books, jigsaw puzzles, etc around). And definitely they are all now loaded!
But personally, nah can't say I really want any of those things ... I'm happy doing my own thing - if I've got enough money to pay the bills then that's all I ask!

I become so sick of hearing "New Zealand" mentioned during the Oscars broadcast. I'm going to avoid all media outlets for the next few weeks, until the nation's erection subsides.
Why did Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson show up to the Oscars dressed like parents going to a school prize giving evening? It can't just be that they're from New Zealand.
And that Richard Taylor guy. He freaks me out. He's like a someone doing a parody of a typicoow New Zillinder, except he's for real. When he gave thanks to his "paaaahtner" I almost threw up.

I dunno. I don't normally get much cultural cringe happening. One of my favourite New Zealand cultural moments was when Chris Matthews sing "kiss my *arse*" in the Headless Chicken's railway surfing.
But seeing all the New Zealand Lord of the Rings people giving their acceptance speeches was strange. Anna Paquin, Jane Campion, Russell Crowe, they all seemed like ordinary New Zealand (or in Russ's case semi-NZ) people when they got their awards. But many of the NZ LOTR people seemed like weird cartoon characters.
I guess I just don't identify with fruity ladies with big unkempt hair or dorky guys who thank their "paaaahtnaaaah", and I wouldn't no matter what country they came from.
Somewhere in my logic process I think this means I relate more to Russell Crowe than Fran Walsh. Err...

I'll give credit to the previous National government for creating the tax incentive schemes that allowed LOTR to be made here, but in terms of supporting any other kind of creativity, Clark's labour government is a million miles ahead of anyone else. And quite frankly, I'd much rather that my prime minister occupied her time running the country rather than wasting it drawing pictures.

Just jokes... the practical implications are great for those involved, however my personal tastes and those of the Academy might differ.
On the practical implication, do people think these awards will have some kind of "trickle down" effect for movies that aren't clear cut morality tales based around spectacle and action? (ie. "not Hollywood")
DISCLAIMER: I went to all three, and enjoyed myself. I just like some other kinds of movies more. And for that kind of movie there are things I enjoy more too.

As a further topic deviation (please don't hurt me), Basking in Reflected Glow, or BiRGing for short, is a studied phenomenon, and has the potential to have a positive influence on your life (see link below for brief details

because it's the benchmark of making filmmaking recognition? just look at how much the awards mean to the winners when they receive them - this is the best industry recognition they can get. take a look at the history - there are some fantastic actors/actresses/directors/editors in there.

I can't think of anything better than: why not? Peter Jackson seems to be quite outspoken about things he feels strongly about, and he appears to be very happy about getting this recognition. I would say he is the best person to judge whether these awards are of benefit.
Also: calling this the 'hollywood' opinion might be stretching things for the sake of your point? Isn't it the Academy Awards? Is that more than 'Hollywood'? In terms of mainstream film industry is Hollywood bad?

And is it really Hollywood's opinion? Membership of the Academy is offered either when two members nominate a person, or the person is nominated for an Academy Award. There is not exact figure on the geographical make-up that I can find, but that would suggest that the membership should be reasonably international (or at least not as US skewed as you might expect).

here's my nickel's worth .... less about the artistry, more about what this unbelieveable advertisement is selling.
this is a crazy big deal for nz's screen production industry - film, tv, the whole nine yards. it means more kudos for jackson - he's already considered one of the 20 most powerful people in hollywood (and he doesn't even live there). and it means more attention, interest &c for nz made films getting distribution deals, actors getting jobs, etc. this helps our local film industry grow. i think this is good.
it's very clear to me that this is new zealand's year in the US - that is - the year that the great welt of the US becomes more aware of who we are, where we are, and why we're 'ok'. this may not matter to some of you. on some levels i understand that point of view. but understand this - nz is totally dependent on its exporting companies to make profits, and the economy grows so they pay taxes. the more nz is on the radar of joe six-pack and mary soccer-mom in Sheboygan, Wn, the easier for nz companies to export more stuff. and that makes it possible for our standard of living to be better and so on and so on. this is important if you care about what nz will be like in 10-20-50 years time.
an amazing artistic achievement - yes; an inspiration to generations of nz's creative people - yes; an advertisement to tell a 'more than just clean and green and full of sheep' story about nz thereby promoting nz for what it really is - clever, switched on, a first-world country with the same highs and lows as any other 1st world country - yes; exploitation? - no - just how it works ...

i tell you what though...i was a bit embarrassed how LOTR was like the "bully film"..the big blockbuster giving nobody else a chance..I mean, the Cinematography and editing in "city of God" blew my mind...fuck, i haven't been so inspired by a film lately..I didn't think alot of the editing/photography in Rings..but ah well..at leat LOTR won and not Master and Commander (ewwwww)
Kudos to everyone involved. Much respect to Fran and Peter for not buying into the glitz.
