Michael J. Hex tribute gig

Mike Brassell - known to the world as Michael J. Hex of bands Squirm and the Hiss Explosion, passed away this week due to pneumonia.

Mike was a wonderful musician and a thoroughly cheerished friend of many people in the Christchurch and Dunedin music scene, always a thoughtful and generous character. With his passing Chris Andrews and Fleur De Lis thought it thought it would be appropriate that the musicians of Christchurch and Dunedin gave back to our passed friend, so are planning a memorial benefit gig to be played out in a fortnight - Friday March 12th at the Media Club.

If you yourself were a friend, or you know people who would like to pay a musical tribute to Mike, please contact Chris by email or by phone (details on the link below)

All proceeds will go towards Mike's funeral costs, and will be accepted in the form of donation. We plan the gig to be a celebration of Mike's music and his character, as he will be sorely missed.

acts so far comfirmed include:
the dial-tones,
the shocking pinks,
into the void,
mini-snap,
eskimo,
the undercurrents,
dave khan's drawing room project,
plus several other solo performances

just to point out that the gig will be on friday the 12th as fran pointed out above, rather than the 13th as initially posted on noizyland. we're still confirming bands, so its going to be a very busy night - hope to see everyone there.

Michael was an amazing man. I only found out yesterday about the terrible news. He was one of the few who made Dunedin the place it is.

I wish i was in CHCH so i could help in someway.

yeah, i can't believe it. so sad. he was such a great enthusiast and organiser. he always got things done. and he had such plans ahead too. Dunners is the sort of town where it's real easy to sit on yer arse and watch the world go by - Mike talked the talk and walked the walk. he rocked. i loved his band. dammit, things are gonna be a bit quiet and directionless without him.

dew evaporates- & all the world is dew
so dear- so fresh- so fleeting

Just found out about Mike's passing away, this is so sad. Mike was a true gentleman, genuine, downright friendly fella, and all his musical projects were awesome, from Squirm to Whitey Hiss to the Hiss Explosion, solo stuff and his bassing support to Ape Management....I'll miss that friendly face in Dunners...hope his family are holding up OK.......

ok, this is what we've confirmed so far:

the michael j. hex memorial gig
friday the 12th of march at the media club, 191 armagh street, christchurch
entry by donation, open mike approach to performances, but with confirmed appearances by:
the dial-tones

eskimo
undercurrents
drawing room
+ solo performers and others

the donations go towards mike's funeral costs, and the night is being organised by fleur de lis (the dial-tones) and myself (chris andrews). feel free to contact me if you want to contribute to the night.

sad to hear about michael- id been told to watch out for him- ¿into the void?- ¿is ronnie in chch?

..oh and i forgot to mention an appearance by the new shocking pinks line-up..

..i don't think so - dave told me it'll be a 3 or a 4 piece into the void for the night, so i guess it's just the christchurch crew.

dave white - aka dragstrip, has confirmed that he'll be coming down for the evening. i heard from fleur last night that we're going to have a series of old posters and photos from mike's old bands, plus slides of photos taken from the waitangi day special gig i put on back in february
