Black Crows. Conspiricey
Prince. 3121
Joan Armatrading. Love and Affection
Morrissey. Last of the Famous International Playboys
Steely Dan. Babylon Sisters.
I was trying out some new distortion for a review, it reminded me of Sonny Thompson, whose afro reminded me of J.A. when I looked in the vinyl I saw the 7" of Morrissey and the Steely Dan concert ad is in the paper.
I'll go I think. pity its the Westpac Trust.
1. The Flaming Lips - Fight Test
2. Broken Social Scene - Anthems for a seventeen year-old girl
3. Minuit - Except You
4. Outkast - Hey Ya
5. The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
Pretty stoked to see The Postal Service getting a gurnsey. Oops.. Ozzie slang. Still, pretty great album and love the funny Cars style guitar riff in that tune.
Are they getting (or have they got) airplay in NZ?
Not really airplay. Well except for Bfm who play the shiz all day (scuse the snoopism).
Seem to be doing extremely well within the flatmates-on-drug-of-choice scene though. Suprisingly more spins than Broken Social Scene - which I adore right now.
Postal Service reminds me of the Chemical Brothers/Wayne Coyne track...
Oof.. I reckon musically that Postal Service album is way more interesting than the Chems manage these days... not that I was too anti that track with the Flaming Lips guy...
IMO much better than both put together is Dntel's 'The Dream of Evan and Chan', which is actually the same two guys who became Postal Service, but has this wave of distortion thing going on that makes it a bit more like an extension of what MBV were up to...
Just took a look at the site for the first time this day and saw this.. nice timing.
That track 'Run into Flowers' is like an electronic version of MBV, eh? I'd forgotten about that. There's an awesome remix of it called something like the Midnight Fuck mix. Well, I reckon it's awesome anyway. A bit more squelchy and weird in the beats department, but keeps the main elements intact.
Not too sold on M83 in general, but like that one track.
// I got put off them by overzealous colleague. Best track for re-immersion?
I reckon that one, but I'm probably overzealous too. ;) Been thrashing that for 2+ years and not sick of it.
The album it's off is 'Life is Full of Possibilities'. Dntel working with a bunch of guest singers... probably about a third instrumentals still. 'Anywhere Anyone' and 'Suddenly is sooner than you think' are both faves out of the vocal tracks.
Re: the MBV thing, I really can't think of anyone else who does stuff much like later MBV.
Did you ever hear Medicine? Their debut 'Shot Forth Self Living' is pretty damn hard on the ears (lots of high shrieky feedback) but is one of the few I can think of that gets into that wall of distortion, dreamy guitar stuff with psychedelic electronic bits. There were lots of shoegazer bands who did the droning guitar thing, but not many who mixed it up with the studio sabotage. :)
woo hoo - Such Great Heights.
I finally gots me some Postal Service tracks the other day, heck I've missed out on two DCFC albums, shame. Don't get me started on how long it has taken me to finally check out Neutral Milk Hotel. I am so slack.
Yeah? Man you play so much stuff I have a hard time keeping track.
Heh I finally heard some Fu Manchu properly when Elmo d/led "Squash that Fly".
I'm sure you've played heaps of that too.
I need to raid your collection.
Heck better yet I need an iPod.

Woohoo! JET , that album is FUCKING AMAZING! High five for mentioning it, most people I know can't handle it either. The opening tune 'One More' kills me, interesting to see that Brad Laner (guitarist) was on the recent Caribou album in '05 and they sampled a riff from this tune as well.
This is the Medicine album that is an essential companion for an person embarking on taking 'shrooms....it all makes sense, at least it did back in '95!
I bought the Wrens album Meadowlands last year. A nice little record with some potential classics. Reminded me of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot without the buzzing. Wilco's disc is the superior one, but Meadowlands is worth a spin.

apart from that one mint chicks song, which is good, I just dont see what the hype is about the Mint Chicks. I mean they look really good and all but are just cardboard on the ear. watered down fugazi without the anger and sans-tune. At their recent bodega gig, support act Disaster Radio was far superior
