Top 5 Magazines

Forums: Top 5s,

anyone find it weird that as of this post the top 5 magazines are all NZ?

nz magazines are generally really well written. I recently moved to Oz, & the standard here is crap in comparison, you can't trust the reviews & most of the articles read like a fourth form english project. rip it up & real groove are definitely of an international standard. pants.

I really don't think they are, eh. If I was to ever meet their proofreaders in a darkened alley, they would probably be hanging out with Santa and the Easter Bunny because I don't think they exist.

true that, but ya know: spelling schmelling. content wise they're pretty on it. being a magazine & nz music nut I'm hardly objective, but I've been reading rip it up for 15 years & it's only had a few bad patches in that time. & you've gotta love the brutal honesty of real groove, they call a dog a dog & a gem a gem. anyways, a hell of a lot better than oz mags - apparently EVERY oz band is gold. sux 'cause you don't know where to start... anyone know any good oz bands? (respondents stating silverchair, john butler trio or jet need not apply)

// anyone know any good oz bands? (respondents stating silverchair, john butler trio or jet need not apply)

yeah....try:
The Sleepy Jackson, Mukaizake, Disater plan!!, Architecture in Helsinki, Dappled Cities Fly, Quarter Acre, faker, Deloris, The Night Terrors, Adam Said Galore, At Sea, 78 Saab, Augie March, Youth Group.

Disater plan...sorry thats Disaster Plan. (their album "Party" is one of my favourite "feel good" records)

Hmm, Q's ascended to the number 3 slot.. so much for NZ mags, bring on the rock traditionalists!

Some other bands from Oz I quite like: Machine Translations, Minimum Chips, Sodastream.. presuming you like indie rock kinda stuff. Hmm.. guess I can check your top 5s!

of course...you got ya Gerling and The Dirty Three...
and i'm also quite liking Transtar. Very "un-ian". I HATE oasis, and they are kinda like a coldplay/oasis thing....but i like em. dammit.

cheers boys, lotsa listening for me.

Just top 5 for the moment..

funny how the top five magazines (and most of the top 10) are music related
i know its a music site, so that makes sense, but i think music is far better to listen to than read about...if i want to relax i'll listen to music and read a book or magazine about something else ..
but thats just me

however the only real gripe have with most kiwi magazines is that they gradually become more expensive, and less interesting

Real Groove is exempt because its always been shite from the word go, but Rip it Up is a poor excuse for it's former self, as is Remix - both were ironically better when you didn't have to pay for them.. i know thats the realities of commercial publishing, but it would be nice to see a bit more substance over style for a change,

I would have to disagree with you there. "Real Groove (Global Roots music from beyond the mainstream)" - Full Title...was once a very fine magazine, covering the fine not so commercial music being produced the world over. In its heyday with editors Nick Bollinger and Marck Cubey it was a kick ass read with my only beef being that they were alittle too harsh on local artists with their reviews...but then again, pretty much the whole industry had no respect for local music then.

RIU has to me pretty much remained constant through the ages, its always covered popular music, the only reason its covering different music to when it was around yonks ago, is that different music is popular now. RIU has just changed for the times. Real Groove sold its soul to the Devil.

wohoo!!! and as i look up, alowhum finally creeps into the top 5.

Rip It Up was Good in its day

popular music has changed luci. for example...lets compare some old issues

RIU - 1993. Cover - Dave Dobbyn. Stories- Danzig, Bell Biv Devoe, Deep Purple, Matthew Sweet, Dave Dobbyn, The Spin Doctors.

ie...The popular hip hop, metal, rock, alternative, pop artists of the day.

Real Groove (Global Roots beyond the mainstream) - 1995. Cover - Bailterspace. Stories- Bailterspace, Jan Hellreigal, Little Axe, The Cramps, Cruel Sea, Celtic Heartbeat, South by Southwest diary, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

the slightly more non-commercial side.

Well maybe if you put another one out, it'd creep a little faster/higher :P

April 15th buddy.

Well I can see I'm going to have to singlehandedly bring BOYS BOYS BOYS BOYS BOYS into the top five!

Damn good news.

See ya tomorrow night.

so was real groove always tied to real groovy records, or not?
perhaps it was only cool before real groovy came to wellington, meaning before i ever read it...
i just assumed it was an in house publication at least in part

for the record, how many years has real groovy been in Wellington for now anyway???

yup..as far as I'm aware, real groove was run by real groovy for years...the two have split now, but are still closely related. (to be honest i have no fucken idea) but i think their is still a close connection, just not as close as it once was.

Real Groovy AKL has been around for yonks (year anyone???). I think RG WLG has only been around since..97/98ish??maybe..

Well the girls in it are so unattractive why else would you read it?

They aren't all bad.

Though to be frank, I dislike Hef and the crew's predilection for fake boobs. There are some nice naturals from time to time, but I don't want to see women with soccer-balls for breasts.

NW is in the top 5?? Where are your standards, people?! Next it'll be That's Life

RIU ruling this category. leading by 20 votes...still. Funny, I would have guessed that Real Groove would be more popular.

Bass Player US.

its relaunch/repackage has been a marked improvement.
John Goldsby column is a must read, and the following Players have had transcriptions recentley,
Jack Bruce, Jerry Jemmot, Paul Chambers, and Carol Kaye.

It really has picked up.
