After playing an incredible set of about 30 songs, he was winding down. There was some drunk dickhead in the audience shouting stuff at him and finally he put down his guitar, took a flying leap from the stage and by all accounts headbutted him! Had to be pulled off. A very dramatic finish.
In a way, it was a great way to finish. If he'd just said "thanks, goodnight" and walked off it would have been a bit anti-climatic.
Graham Reid's review in the NZ Herald of his Dogs Bollix show mentions "troglodytes" in the audience who talked the whole way through. Maybe by last night he's had enough.
Still, I think the "I don't do drugs anymore" statements may be exaggerated.
But what a set! The man sure can write a good tune and I still think Outdoor Type's "I can't go away with you on a rock climbing weekend/ what if something's on TV and is never shown again" is as profound as it gets.

Loooove that line, but he didn't write it! I think it's one of his finest moments all the same. thanks for the gig overview guys, so sad to have missed his headbutting antics.
Ol' Evan probably reached the end of his patience.
You can only try and perform for so long before all the inconsiderate punters or scenesters as I have been informed get to you.
Probably wasn't even the poor punter's fault - he just happened to cop the brunt of his frustrations. I would blame the people who turned up and decided to just talk loudly and obnoxiously throughout the set. May be some of those in Auckland did follow him down to Wellington. Nice work guys.
It was this particular punters fault. He was trying to get a rise. I don't think he was expecting a beating, but he was definately pushing his luck. Apart from that guy though, I didn't really notice other people talking while he was playing.
Thanks to Tom Morgan (Smudge) I think. Although they both co-wrote a lot of stuff.
Same thing at the Auck Wed night show. He told "those two moron female to shut up", haha good stuff, but later appologised. Good idea to stage right next to the stage of a fairly quiet accoustic gig in a small setting and talk shit to your mate so the performer (and the crowd) can hear you. Just cant quite figure people buying tickets to go and talk with their mates and prattle on, (I could clearly hear them over Evan) about mis-informed Lemonheads facts and then proceed to misquote his lyrics while the song was being performed, albeit sounding like a 3-octave-too- low strangled cat too. Still, a good show, and I enjoyed his soberesque performance. Half the time is still a gem.
Oh well - he gets no sympathy from me. You get what you deserve.
What makes something think that they are immune from punishment if they are trying to goad someone? Should one turn a blind eye and walk away? Should Evan have not been so sensitive? How much crap does one take before they break?
The punter probably thought he won't bash me because he a musician. That'll teach him a lesson.
I agree I think that Evan ruined what was a great night, Yea I know it's hard when people give bands crap and it must really get to them The thing is that there were bouncers around the bar that would have happily removed hecklers but Evan had to be a big man and start a big brawl. It was funny to see him being dragged to the backstage by his wife. The boy need to chill out.
wtf was with all the poeple talking at the show! I don't understand why you pay the $35 the talk as loudly as you can up close to the stage where people are generally trying to listen to the guy on stage and not some fucking twits behind you.
... at a Ben Harper concert a bunch of people (like 9 or 10) next to me decided to have a sit down and chat on the floor during the set. I hate those people.
hahahaha that is really quite funny.
and i agree with both of you.
While i wasnt there, and cannot vouch for dando's behaviour, it is somewhat rfreshing if the artist/performer takes the matter into his own hadns rather than delegating bouncers to heavy people, they're always so narrow-minded about things
technically yes, though i think he was sharing the stage with his ego.
his reactions a lot of things... innocent comments to him between songs from people who seemed to be genuine fans ... he looked like he was gonna stab them.
My friend was pretty drunk and everytime she opened her mouth to say something to him I cringed and feared for her life. But he seemed to giggle at those comments. Other people weren't so lucky. Anyyyyways... I've yet to master the art of pointing and clicking but... uh...
he's got a foul temper alright.... on the tuesday Evan started yelling, asking some guy if he wanted to beat the shit out of him. he wanted to take this guy outside after the show, all sorts of stuff. being right up the front straight in front of him I could see through the hair that obscured his eyes, he was absolutely wild. I don't blame him though. The guy who was giving him shit was an overgrown drunk oaf.
once Evan said what he had to say he was fine though. It has to be said I loved the gig and hope he comes back. such a gifted songwriter.
And tell me why any musician should have to "tolerate" a heckler? Is it compulsory to get heckled and be given verbals at a gig? Does it make the person who does the heckling feel good about themselves that they can slag off a musician. Is that the mentality you are advocating leno o? What is the point of going to see someone if you don't like them?
sounds like the audience are a bunch of wankers
some guy's disturbing the show and they just wait to complain once they get home to the safety of the internet
as usual showing no respect for an artist
who's probably sold more records than the whole country put together
why didn't anyone tell the punters to shut up?
want to change your flag and be proud of your country
idea:
large dick with a fist holding it
yellow on brown
He wasn't boring. The guy was screaming out song titles and lyrics while Evan was singing. He even stopped a song to say he didn't ask for suggestions. The heckler that got the headbutt was being a fuckhead. However, it still sucks that Evan didn't handle it with a scrap of dignity intact.
i'm not holding anyone responsible
i just reckon if you really like someone (eg a musician)
and some one is harrassing them
you don't have much dignity if you just stand their watching instead of trying to stick up for them
and that dignity seems even lessened when you go back home and start a little game of chinese whispers about how this person you like lost all their dignity.
As far as I could tell, the only person who had a problem with the heckler... or was even paying any attention to him WAS Evan Dando. If he'd been near me I'd have told him to shut the fuck up but he wasn't so I didn't.
but come on,
it's an acoustic gig, it's not like you went for the choreography.
it's about the sound, and if the sound is being compromised by some guy "screaming out" and if you could hear it, then the show is being compromised
if the performer has to stop mid song to deal with it, then again the show is being compromised.
do you think there's dignity in travelling thousands of miles to endure this?
it sounds like the gig would have been an endurance test for any performer,
and it also seems like mr dando gave you guys a pretty entertaining finale,
your apathy paid off, and it's a hell of a lot more realistic than deja voodoo
As far as I could tell, the only person who had a problem with the heckler... or was even paying any attention to him WAS Evan Dando. If he'd been near me I'd have told him to shut the fuck up but he wasn't so I didn't.
I was at the Auckland gig. When Evan spoke, he reminded me
of Ozzy Osbourne, minus the English accent. They should both
be in a TV special - "The Ravages of Drugs on Young Minds".
The gig reminded me of Lou Barlow at the Kings Arms, too many
people talking, so much so that the act almost had to shout into
the mic to be heard.
Does anyone know the title of the song and where to find it that Evan played which was probably called something like "I wish I was him" and was a short funny one about a very cool guy? Near the end of the set before it all went a bit off...
I have been a big fan of the Lemonheads and Dando for about 12 years. I'm glad many of you enjoyed the gig, but I was extremely not impressed by his performance. I think he did sub-standard versions of all the songs. He rushed through the first 5 songs like he had just had a line. I talked to him earlier and he was really chilled. Then he buggered off for awhile and came on stage & he had clearly taken something......my guess was coke or a pill. I don't believe he has got over his struggle with drug use. I think he is chemically stressed out after years of the music life and it's antics and that showed in his performance. I took my fiance along to show her how good of a song writer he is and we both were un-impressed. Could have been one bad night, I'm not happy it was the one I went to.
I think the boy did everyone a favour, i've seen more enrgy at a Barry Manilow concert.
For those who like to hear every octave i suggest buying a cd and listening to it in the comfort of your own arm chair with your headphones on, then maybe get your mam to bring you a nice cup of tea.
I did that once - this guy was throwing beer at us and messing about with FX buttons etc, so I jumped off the stage and punched him. That's when I found out how crap I was at fighting. Nope, I never did that again.
You can't have been as bad at fighting as Dando was. I dont know about all of this flying headbutt business, It looked from where I was standing like a semi flop/semi stage dive kind of thing. The guy at the front was quite annoying but Dando needs to grow up. The last time I saw Evan he was on the floor with the bouncers pulling people off him, I think he's lucky he didnt get bashed more himself.
Everyone seems to be missing the point, it shouldn't all be about the fighting, it should be about the atmosphere and listening to quality live music. I reckon the guys getting a hard enough time anyway, he was a drunken idiot but i've been known to over do the drink myself on the odd occasion so let he who is without sin cast the first stone or more aptly in this case, let the boy who hasn't got wankered and annoyed people throw the first bottle.
he touched any booze...he does not drink at all...the man was cool....he's lived hard, it shows, but he still has a lovely fckn voice, and plenty of talent
