supermarket muszac

I dashed in to countdown today and while i was grabing the few things i needed, the following was playing on their music system
My love is Alien .. mysex
beatuiful.. Ankia Moa
what more can a poor boy do.......... can't quite remeber the title, and I keep thinking it's enz but I know it's not
then herbs then dave dobbin
and the supervalue store I shop in is always playing blackseeds and miniut

ok so any what do you think about all of this... does it mean we as a nation are getting over the cringe, or is it the bastardisation of our culture........(or just for leno a .. it's crap music anyway so who cares.... autualy can we please avoid the topic going that way please)

so thoughts, is it a good thing, does it make us stand taller to have new zealand music playing in our sound scape?

Forums: NZ Music,

//what more can a poor boy do.......... can't quite remeber the title, and I keep thinking it's enz but I know it's not
Poor Boy - Split Enz. Unless someone else did a cover...?

??? Oddly enough the first line to that song is 'My love is alien'

??

...but as far as the actual topic is concerned, I'm kinda torn as to the motives behind it... was the whole soundtrack kiwi music, or was it mixed with other classic hits?

At a gut level the thought of companies using 100% kiwi music makes me squeal in delight, but on reflection it's a pretty heavy-handed advertising ploy.

I think its great news, personally and professionally.

Its always been one of our motives. To have a local soundtracks instead of imported culture.

The Apra going to the artists would be substantial for that also.

milestone comment aka....

played as listed.....
my love is alien is a citizen band song.... as can be found on their 1st LP.. (my bad) this band did have both chunns in it

Countdown Dunedin Central tends to have quite a good quantity of Kiwi in it's classic hits Muzac, and sometimes has a real run of them. Ditto Gardens New World. However, neither have yet to really delve into more recent stuff that I'm aware of (apart from Countdown playing The Rock sometimes at night which will give a bit of nz content).

pretty heavy-handed advertising ploy... another thought I had was how many people would know that they had just heard 6 nz songs in a row?

how many supermarkets would be registered with APRA

my bet is, if they're playing a mix tape then the artists are getting nothing

when I was working at Pak'n Slave (finished last week) there is quite a bit of nz music, but its mixed with all the other crap they play there.
Artist's I heard there were - Goldenhorse, K'lee, Goodshirt, Blindspott, Zed, etc

This doesn't count as supermarket stuff so much, but it seems kinda related, due to the suitability of Annika Moa to play in supermarkets and on soaps:

On Home and Away they play what seems to be more NZ music than Aussie these days in the background, and i'm sure it's not just Mushroom artists. It's always nice when NZ music turns up on the telly from other countries - standing out most in my mind is Crowded House at the start of "The Stand" mini series which I watched in class at my American School in Japan and it made me feel all glowy.

IIRC Crowded House was also played on Party of Five. That was cool.

And the feelers were in Drop Dead Gorgeous, which was rather random.

nice when they play bic runga in 'american pie'

well i work at woolworths and the music i hear is styff like Daniel Beddinfield,Bic Runga,Anika Moa and they did play a blindspott song once as well as zed

yeah I think every supermarket has the same tape, but after you work there after a while you don't really notice what music they play. I'm glad I'm longer there!!

yeah. The songs repeat every hour or so

they tend to play quite a lot of things at random at Countdown, IE. Sometimes you'll here the Beatles and the next Atomic Slappers, Then Split Enz then str8 onto Daniel Benningford, as i say they have a random music generator or something.

the warehouse plays boy george

so does Pak n' Slave

4 square supermarket plays karaeoke classics (about 2 octaves higher, electronic, without singing) its painful...
