Valentine was a Christian bishop in a time and place where Christianity was illegal; he was found out and executed on the 14th which happened to be the big-finale-day of a pagan festival when males drew names of young maids and gave them roses (European spring an all.) Poor Val was later cannonised for his matyrdom and the roses thing is just a nice coincidence.
