seriously why... I'm on my fem all men are scum, emotioanl soap box, so i am unable to be rational, .... so mana man, be the voice of reason, tell me how this is the right thing to do.
I'm not going to debate your answer I truelly am interested.
because there is no proof that any of the alleged actually happened, so if we let her stay then anyone could come into nz and claim refugee status with any old story.
sure it's sad, but in this circumstance you have to be tough.
yeah, I mean it's not like Sri Lanka is an lawless, out-of-control third world country with no social institutions to deal with this sort of thing. They're a fairly well established, sophisticated bunch, that (with the exception of, uh, a civil war), should be able to handle this sort of thing. I mean, if the situation was reversed, and a kiwi girl was asking for asylum in Sri Lanka because she feared for her life in NZ, well, um...
yeah, I kinda started off with one thought in mind, but then derailed myself at the end there.
I do believe, however, that the Sri Lankan authorities should (and will) be able to handle this situation, and keep her safe upon her return, making the calls for her to be allowed asylum here pretty weak.
actually, those comments above are made with with my purely rational legal thinking cap on. At heart, I reckon in cases like this there should have some sort of special dispensation for asylum seekers who are fleeing situations that fall outside the normal political/religious persecution requirements, no matter where they've come from. Open a can'o'worms that would, though...
// how would you judge who is for real and who is trying to scam it?
yup, that's the can'o'worms I was talking about. although, the same process takes place with all the current asylum seekers - it would just mean investigating a slightly different set of circumstances. I mean, if it was common public knowledge that this girl had been abused, that people had gone to prison for that abuse (I don't actually know the ins and outs of this specific case - it seems as if no-one is disputing her abuse story, at any rate), and that returning would cause great psychological stress and put her in potential personal danger, then that would be pretty good grounds for a dispensation to me.
COMMENT FROM ARTICLE:
Mr O'Connor says he has done all he can to ensure the girl is protected when she returns to her homeland. She will be placed in refuge away from her family.
Well if this is the case then so be it..she has the support of us without need to migrate. Its other foreigners who have made this feeling outstand not that I oppose to her staying here but if they're going to sort her out well then she's fine cos in the end that is where she belongs..her real HOME.
Ok wait... i watched the news before... and they said Psychological Tests had PROVED that she Had been Sexually Abused.. we are sending this girl back to a place where she has been mistreated... thats just wrong. plain wrong.
Doesnt anyone remember the lessons in social studies class of how females can be treated in that sort of area of the world? A Woman can have acid or boiling water poured over them becuase a man takes a fancy to her and rapes her. The Male gets no punishment. Its all the Females fault... Think about that. Yeah so they say they are going to give her refuge back there, away from her family.. isnt this a place where family integrity is almost above all else? how can anyone actually believe that she is going to be safe... i would not be surprised if her family went after her... she has spoken out, in her own way, against her family...in sending her back, we're allowing them the chance to punish her.
//Doesnt anyone remember the lessons in social studies class of how females can be treated in that sort of area of the world?
I think you should probably swot up on Sri Lanka before you make those kind of sweeping assumptions. Not all of Asia is full of savages.
// A Woman can have acid or boiling water poured over them
// becuase a man takes a fancy to her and rapes her
I think this phenomena is particular to poorer and more fanatical muslim communities in various Middle Eastern (and, admittedly, some South Asian) countries. Sri Lankan is a predominantly Buddhist nation.
//swot up on Sri Lanka before you make those kind of sweeping assumptions. Not all of Asia is full of savages.
yeah i know its pretty general, but her family were raping her... sending her back just doesnt seem good enough in my mind...
i mean imagine you have a grandaughter and you got her out of that... or if you were the girl and were being sent back... its not ok. its just not... while her life could improve once back there, it could have been improved here.. and back there, its just making it easier for her family.
i heard the argument today: good. we cant be expected to take in everyone who has had a bad upbringing, there is hundreds of thousands of girls out there just like her...
this girl tried to better her situation, alot of others cant. its like those ads on tv where they ask you to support a child you know... while we cant do too much about all the others, we had the oppurtunity to support her and wev said no... *sigh* this is just all too depressing...
it was reported on the national radio this morning that she will face death threats for bring the family in to direpute.. and this type ofbrutallity isn't just a "muslim" thing.
// she will face death threats for bring the family in to direpute..
// and this type ofbrutallity isn't just a "muslim" thing.
indeed.
again, I'm totally behind the play on this case. Does anyone know if her allegations have been followed up in Sri Lanka to the point of anyone being convicted?
again, you'd like to think the Sri Lankan authorities aren't completely hopeless, and that if her claims are true, and death threats are forthcoming, that they'll be doing something about it. As far as offering her safe haven in Sri Lanka, the herald article points out...
A proper care and protection plan, such as was now in place in Sri Lanka, with support from community organisations, the Government and members of the girl's own family, would ensure her continuing safety...The New Zealand government would be "monitoring" the implementation of the care and protection plan in Sri Lanka.
I note from the strictly impartial and totally believable 3 News that shes going to be taken care off by a non-governmental aid agencey.[ Catholic ]. the nz comminsion for Children is upset about the whole process as they believe that the Sri lankan version of them is totally ineficent and underfunded. Which to me sounds remarkadly like our own CYPS.
I remember when I first moved here talking with a couple of friend about how I got jokes about sheep shagging daily at work. One said "just tell 'em they're abo killers".. the other said "no point, they'd like that".
Too accurate, sadly... well accurate for the same ones who'd make the sheep jokes on a daily basis.
The media here has grossly misrepresented the govt's rights with regards to taking in people seeking refuge who arrive at the country, so a lot of people believe anyone in that boat (haha) is automatically an
"illegal immigrant". I think that's why people get emotional about the phrase.
WHat about immigrants who are 'illegal' beacuse it is not possible for them to go through the proper diplomatic channels to apply for residency/ refugee status , like countries where there are no nz/ australian embassies and their home countries try to prevent people from leaving/escaping?
This sri lankan girl has a right to be free from sexual abuse by a bunch of Kiddie Filddlers in her homeland. After All they aint gunna find her in NZ innit?
Sad..but true..it happen worldwide..so luckily she's gone home now where she truly belongs & now that she's been here she has had that experience of being in another country & so she should or would probably think about whats happened to her & come here properly when she's older & more onto it..
She's with some nuns at the moment so she's alright..No more fuss.
is Sri Lanka part of the Commonwealth?
cos Kiwi's n Aussies and SAFers can travel freely within their respective countries with impunity. there seems to be some double standard operating here.
A mate used to work for NZI service and he said after a while you just become...so cynical about these cases. And they cannot validate a refugee claim from Sri Lanka. Its the white mans out-clause
i think its totally fucked, and just hope the little bit of news coverage in NZ might make her case and most importantly her protection more viable
I agree with manamana, there's no proof. Why should we let any person in with any old story? and tell me this man, how would she benefit nz society if she was allowed to stay?
Benefit? Why, she has a natural affinity for immunology and if given the opportunity to study will discover incredible breakthroughs in not only how to effectively treat HIV but also immunise against it.
Yes...Yes it is. Sri Lanka was originally part of the British Administered India until 1947 when The Sub-continent was partitioned creating Muslim Pakistan, Hindu India, Buddhist Sri Lanka and later Islamic Bangladesh. All 3 remain part of the commonwealth today but do not accept the Queen as head of state like NZ, Aust, Canada and Jamaica. (Pakisan ironically remains supended despite it being a staunch US-Ally/Puppet in the war on terrorism)
that's a fucking ridiculous question. The fact that I have an education automatically means I have more potential than the sri lankan girl. Stop being bitter and answer the fuckin question smart guy.
i'd say she has already benefitted our society by inspiring us to carefully think about our immigration policy with regards to people in need, and generally people whom society has helped tend to wish to repay that benevolent society
so you with your education, how do you contribute to society?
why don't they send her there to be with her mum? is there a reason why this can't take place (mum in prison or something?)? If she can't be safe in sri lanka then who has the bigger problem, them or us?
