Unwanted emails...

ok, have a little problem... on this (my home computer) we have outlook express, and somehow one of the email addresses which come in to here has been passed on or something... meaning we are getting a lot of unwanted mail... does anyone know of a quick way to block these emails? at the moment i have to get their actual address and manually block them, which is extremely time consuming and doesnt stop half of the spam mail from being delivered... (im talking even with at least 25 blocked addresses or domain names, leave the mail for a couple of days and you can get 50 new messages maybe only 2 or 3 of which are actually mail...) any ideas or help?

Forums: The Bar,

hmm thats a toughy, you could try not giving your email address to so many porn sites (that will probably half it) but yeah i've got a similar problem but it's not email, it's forum spam this is worse and way harder to get rid of.

manamana its not porn (thank god) and its not my address that got it sent to us.. its my sisters and its all for various types of cheap medication

most of those emails have a link you can use to unsubscribe from the lists. Make sure you use those links every time you get a spam email. You will probably find you still get some, but only a few per day

Are you taking the piss? Worst advice ever.

Hee hee! The point that Joe is making *ahem* is that people that send you unsolicited email about penis enlargements and cheap loans don't tend to have the moral development to use those 'Unsubscribe' requests to actually unsubscribe you. Requesting an 'Unsubscribe' from these emails just confirms that the email address genuine and active. So you end up getting more, not less spam.

Many spammers don't actually rely on genuine mailing lists, but have spiders trawling the net to find email addresses on websites - such as these forums. So - along with not signing up to *any* mailing lists, or at least using a separate email addy when you do sign up, the best thing you can do to prevent getting spam in the first instance is by not posting your email address on message boards. That's also why people often 'scramble' their email addresses when they post them - like happygreebo.nospam (at) hotmail (dot) com.

There endeth my good deed for the day.

...ooo while I'm here, I might mention that MS appear to have made some really impressive improvements to hotmail to filter out spam in the last few months. It's worth getting a hotmail addy just to use in mailing lists and as a general contact address.

Obviously none of this is really going to help Libelle, but just some general advice for anyone that didn't already know. Probably it'd be a shameless plug for hotmail, but I don't have any shares so there's no point.

I always thought that they'd get you more if you unsuscribed too, but I unsuscribed alot of things, and I'm nearly spam-free now

// I'm nearly spam-free now

Well, although some spammers may have a conscience, it's more likely to be due to ever-improving anti-spam software. I've never unsubscribed from any spam, but both my hotmail addresses (that used to get completely overrun) are now nearly spam-free. I also notice the spam goes in cycles - when I get spam the emails are for a particular product and in a specific format, and I only get that format for a couple of days.

Are you using anti-spam software, or were you just unsubscribing?

dont most outlook expresses have options that can block senders that you dont know?... that is one way out but a i dont have my own computer then i have to use hotmail and i never really had any problems with it

I have that problem with the e-mail on my web site that is on my dad's server. Now I hardly use it now because of that, it used to be my mail e-mail address!! It will be a pain in the arse to remove from the site plus people won't be able to e-mail me their comments (which I hardly ever read anyway).
I now use my hotmail account, which used to get 20 spam e-mail a day!! now its like 2 a month, which is strange but good.

Hey there. As I understand it you are using Outlook Express and this receives mail for several addresses. One of these addresses is getting lots of unwanted mail and you would like to block it if you can. There are a couple of options open to you. You could set up a rule that looks at the TO address and use the rule to move all incoming mail for that address to a separate folder so it can be looked at later. This reasonably simple to set up.

Or else you could get hold of a Filtering Tool like mailwasher (NZ Product, see link below) or spam pal and set that up to check incoming mail for possible SPAM. These are pretty good tools for this sort of purpose and work well in a home environment. You ma still want to block addresses as well but if it is SPAM you are worried about this is a bit pointless as spammers use fake addresses and constantly change them.

A final option would be to just stop using the email address and get a new one.

Hope this helps

I hate spams!!! There oughta be a law!

//I hate spams!!! There oughta be a law!

there is in the states, the question is, how will it be enforced?

i get the same problem, the irony is that xtra labels it "spam" on the inbox display yet dont have the guts to actually filter it so we dont get this unwanted crud.

Actually, that's a sensible move on their part. That way you can filter the email y'self and not worry about the odd falsely accused email that you actually want to read getting deleted.

You can configure Xtra's spam filter to automagically delete the emails by logging into the Xtra website. If you've got the guts, of course.

Expect it. We are living in modern technology generation hardcore so all this junk email maybe hard to eliminate unless you constantly keep unsubscribing or filtering it as junk. More money needed for all of this modern crap..but hey who can complain really.
