What happened to Orientation??

No offence to anybody. There are alot of hardworking people involved with the whole thing....but seriously, what the fuck?!

Who cares about Alien Ant Farm? Why is this band headlining Orientation 04? I have watched Orientation going from the premium week of concerts of the year slide to a steaming pile of dog poo.

Please share your stories from past orinetations here. What years were the highlights? lowlights?

Forums: NZ Music,

Being lazy... whats the line up?

Dunno much except that Alien Ant Farm is the major drawcard....who are also doing the "Edge Fest" tour.

there will of course be heaps of shows by locals. Which is cool, but Orientation used to be a great chance to see a good quality international act..eg, Supergrass, Shellac, Spiderbait...and those are just the bands starting with 's'

i think the "touring" kiwi bands are elemenop, goodshirt, steriogram, the bleeders, katchafire, goldenhorse, the managers etc...

maybe add to that Sommerset and Chris Knox..

Otago is as follows. I've left the other stuff in there just for interest.

Mon 23rd Feb - Toga Party (Elemeno P)
Wed 25th - Rhombus
Thu 26th - Comedy
Fri 27th - Goodshirt/Steriogram
Sat 28th- Scribe/Mareko
Mon 1st Mar - Hypnotism
Tue 2nd - Hall Swimming Sports
Wed 3rd - Alien Ant Farm
Thu 4th - 5 bands for no bux (just local ones I'm pretty sure)
Sat 6th - Drum and Bass Night.

yawn.. s 100

Yeah I'm not overly enthused. And I really fuckin hate elemenop, gaaaaaarrrh. He doesn't even sing! Do people not see this?????

sometimes people like to say their pets are singing as well

Otago's better than that ... 20th Feb, Goldenhorse, Phoenix Foundation (i hope), & humble shoegazing supergroup locals, Onanon.

that's the plan anyway.

The Phoenix Foundation playing on the 21st...apparently on a night were we don't entirely fit...but whp cares we will show up and do our thing and it will be fun.

//he talks with rhythm and melody, rather than actually singing. It's not necessarily a bad thing; there's back-up singing from the other band members to add some texture and variety.

Rhythm perhaps, melody very debateable. His style as such isn inherently bad, no; it's just that he sounds like an anally-retentive montonal guy reading a fairytale in Urban Getaway. Really, his tone makes me grind my teeth. Backup vox are fine....

//Elemeno P have a lot of fans and make a lot of people happy regardless of Gibbo's vocal skills.

That's for sure. They're the ones selling the records so they can snub their nose at me all day long! Fair enough too. But I reserve the right to groan loudly whenever their song comes on the radio.

//But one thing's for sure: he'd never, ever get past the judges on NZ Idol.

It'd make for great TV but.

// And I really fuckin hate elemenop, gaaaaaarrrh. He doesn't even sing! Do people not see this?????

Yes, Dave from Elemeno P is like Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth in that he talks with rhythm and melody, rather than actually singing. It's not necessarily a bad thing; there's back-up singing from the other band members to add some texture and variety. Elemeno P have a lot of fans and make a lot of people happy regardless of Gibbo's vocal skills.

But one thing's for sure: he'd never, ever get past the judges on NZ Idol.

In one year - I saw The Dirty Three, Yo La Tengo, and at least 3 other excellent gigs at Victoria. That was great.

didn't shellac do orientation one year? i think it was around the time of 1000 hurts.

Yeah...Shellac, HDU and Seven at the Student Union. 2000.

It is merely one symptom of university becoming more of a generic business rather that a centre of culture and learning.

Pretty soon, it'll all be just another step in moulding people into perfect little generic folk, designed specifically to do their own job and nothing else. Kinda a Brave New World scenario.

Or maybe the organisers have really shit taste in music.

Alien ant farm are just poor. I doubt their target demographic (they gotta have one...) even extends to people over 18. Orientation gigs have been great in the past and are a great idea, but this is kinda like having a wonderful bowl of cool, creamy ice cream only to have some cunt come and pour mayonaise all over it. Hopefully AAF will have passport problems or something. I don't wanna bitch about the hard work people have obviously put in, but still, isn't Uni all about getting outside of a comfort zone and extending yourself?

// Or maybe the organisers have really shit taste in music.

I think you may be being overly enthusiastic in calling them organisers.

yuk....

i remeber seeing The Dirty Three, Yo la tengo, Mink and The Stereo Bus one year, as well as the assorted local stuff, letterbox lambs and possibly hell is other people and, probably shihad or hlah

What was last year???
maybe smashmouth, and they didnt even turn up (no great loss there)

>yuk...

AAF, that is.
eeew.

ironic really
they were asking shihad to play
but shihad refused to play a show with smashmouth headlining
i never heard smashmouth fell through
rather funny

The Bites from melbourne sound promising though.

The first ever Dimmer gig with Peter Jefferies on drums & Lou Allison on bass, and the last ever JPSE gig (sob sob!)

was that in the 2nd floor common room?

ah, depends on which university we're talking about, of course...

Auckland Uni on the ground floor in '94. (Elvis shows his age!)

yeah, must have been the same tour. (I was @ canterbury)

it was a day gig. everyone sat down, 'cos if the front people stood up, no-one would have been able to see. everyone was awestruck. it was surreal.

Both of these were night-time and I had to leave early because they were my pre-car days. and the gigs were free back then!

//last ever JPSE gig
*double sob*

It all could be symptomatic of the fact that NZ music is more popular now than it was then. Back in the day, although University's were mainstays of Kiwi music, the general populace wasn't so encouraging. Student radio played more alternative acts and were also involved in the organisation of Orientation. Now that the campus stations are run as seperate entities they're more removed from the event.

Or perhaps we've just got more derivative bands now with fat drummers and guys who can't sing. ;O

I think you've hit the nail on the head- lack of students involved in running student radio/lack of student radio involvement in helping organise orientations... I think it's what's known to some as 'progress'...

I had a fantastic time last year with Salmonella Dub, Fat Fredys Drop, and Blindspott.

This is the first ive heard of this years line up and im not too inpressed. Wouldnt mind seeing steriogram but i dont really want to sit through goodshirt beforehand.

Dub should come back, i know its been done and done but there is somthing about Salmonella dub at Orientation that just works so well.

My 2c

The bands that are playing orientation 2004 are the bands who made it last year, or plan on making it this year. I'm sure if there were better bands doing something, the line up wo uld be better.

Didn't Salmonella Dub get involved in a bit of a tiff about Ori last year with MUSA?

i think they might've pitched the main act a little low in terms of age. i've got some 14 year old skate buddy dudes who are keen, but can't think of one first year who gives a damn. i think orientation organisers were trying, but perhaps didn't judge the market audience ... that well?

too true. when aaf played bdo there was a mass exodus to the beer tent, where much mocking & jeering took place by the oldies (18+). It's a shame aaf got picked when there's such a wealth of quality international live bands that I doubt charge as much as aaf would... still, the organisers must think it's the best band they can get for the $ I guess.

seeing it sounds like AAF were going to be here anyway, tacking them onto the orientation circuit rather than flying some other outfit over especially makes better economic sence.

The obvious downside that the organisers must have overlooked is that AAF will probably actually play AAF stuff at these shows.

it was the other way round. the edge got in touch with alien ant farm after they were already doing orientation shows.

Of the last couple of years were The WBC, We Dunno, Foamy Ed, Sommerset.

There were more highlight bands during the day but somehow I always wound up having class at the same time

Well why don't we all jump on the "ewww AAF" band wagon?

I aren't a great fan, but Alien Ant Farm aren't a shit band, that's for sure.

bro...my 8 year old nephew (well my girlfrieds nephew) gave us a list of 3 cds he wanted for xmas. Five, The Spice Girls (second album) or AAF.

haha, thats so cute!
but i think AAF are okay, the lead guy is sexy! :)

//xmas. Five, The Spice Girls (second album) or AAF.

HA! [falls down]

So because an 8 year old listed it for xmas alongside two "crap" artists, that mkaes it unlistenable to us older people?

Thats a tad naive.

not because of that...mainly because at BDO they were terrible, and every single I have heard from them has been terrible. these are the reasons i cast the first stone.

i am not merely harrasing AAF....it is just orientation has seemed to get pretty rough the past couple of years. But there were some very valid points made above. 1: about student radio not being so directly involved and 2: NZ acts gaining more popularity within NZ.

But I still don't understand why some good bands hook up with the orientation circut. maybe orientation 05 needs to employ Mystery Girl.

but--- i like the spice girls- or at least- both albums have 3 good songs each- & i like those

I happen to like AAF... from what I can see, people dislike them purely because of the Smooth Criminal cover...
Knowing me I'll be too lazy to drag myself to any of their shows though

I actually think their "smooth criminal" cover is the best thing they've ever done.

anyway...looks like Wire are playing in AKL the week of orientation in Wgtn...gee, which gig to go to.

Well if you've already made up your mind about it why spout off? The people who organise Ori put a lot of effort in and its a pretty fucking big undertaking organising with 8 different universities (actually maybe its just 7) students associations and trying to agree on what bands to bring along the tour. And in any case, Ori is more for first years, who are generally a youngish crowd, so AAF might actually appeal to them.

// Well if you've already made up your mind about it why spout off?

was this aimed at me? bro...i have sooo much respect for the crew at orientation and for getting a bunch of NZ bands shows....but seriously. What has Orientation got to do with Student radio anymore? Do AAF get played on Student radio? Do Elemenop, Steriogram etc, etc...get played on student radio....why are "student" radio and student unions so different.

Why shove a bunch of radio friendly 91zm bands down students throats and then encourage them to listen to fringe programming the rest of the year by supporting their student station...it doesn't make sense. The B-net stations sponsor each of the ori's in their town? why?
