What are music video's?

What are music video's for? And what are they supposed to look like? Are they made to sell music with the pretty faces that you see? Why is there so much concentration on the front man?

After reading an interview with Maynard from Tool, I'm all 'I HATE TODAYS MUSIC VIDEOS ROAR' etc. Maynard believes you shouldnt have faces on screen or something. Music isn't visual, if you want to see the band, go to their concerts. Tool's videos usually have some freaky claymation or something strange flying around. That is just another medium of art that Tool are good at.

He also believes that the vocalist shouldn't be the 'front man'. And in the average music video, all you see is the vocalist. Today, it's all about singing. Nah sweet as dont worry about the 256 bar solo the bassest is pulling over top of a 5/4 bar 32nd note double kick rythm... the singer just bent over. That's why you see Maynard at the back of the stage during Tool concerts, because Tool is a band, not a singer.

Forums: The Bar,

That will be the most serious thing I've ever said. EVER. Post, or I'll make butter.

THINGS!!!

got us some butter?

hmm, I can't fully agree, one of the points of a music video can be to show the band, although I agree not to just focus on one or two members the whole time. The singer can also have a message that they hold dare to the band and been up front is the best way to deliver it (rage for example, needs that confrintation).

overall videos, I don't get too into them, they tend to distract me fo the music, but then some are really neat so they entertain in another way.

For sure the entertainment bit is whats its for..although yes do not focus simply on the forefront man but rather an equal shot of your whole band seeing its everyone whos involved but yes also emphasise the singer at small amounts of time to emphasise the essence of the song I suppose. Yeah, you could say it doesnt really matter bout the clip but as mentioned its all to do with the project itself & brings fourth more for us to see, more visualness rather than just the vocal side of the things. Playing it by ear doesn't really work for the deaf so clips cater to everyone in different ways plus you could look at it as if its an extension of how far the song has gone.

if thats what tool think then i think it too.

tool think you're a fucking idiot

Disasteradio thinks carl is being funny. very funny in fact.

But not as funny as tool are - albeit in a different way.

they are television commercials for songs.

but more importantly; what are apostrophes!?

music videos are simply for commercial purposes, Marketing your music thru videos

You're totally right there, Luci. Music videos exist so that songs can be played on television, which aids in promoting the band.

Which reminds me of The Replacements video for their song "Bastards of Young". After previously dissing MTV in their song "Seen your video", their video for "Bastards of young" consisted of a single shot of a stereo speaker playing the song, and is probably the most honest music video ever made.

watch Nice Day for an Earthquake, Luci.

depends..

some are advertising for the song, or the artist, or the album
some are a cunning way of getting more royalties
some are an enhancement of the original song (helping the lyrics fit into place better for instance)
some are seperate artistic creations in their own right

some are all of the above and more...

//artistic creations in their own right
"Thriller" and "Smack my bitch up" come to mind.

Thriller. The classic of all clips.
The 'Smack my bytch' one I dont think I've seen. Who sings that? Although I've heard of it but unsure.

//who
Artist: The Prodigy
Director: Jonas Ackerlund (think that's how it's spelt)

If you haven't seen it you should, it's well worth a look.

Tools videos have become so cliched. It's like, get some poo, use it in some stop-motion animation, get a naked old man to crawl along the floor, edit it all together, and there's your Tool video. It's worked to their advantage in that by having videos that look like first year film school assignments, they get to cop and arty angle, and not just be lumped in with other rock bands.

But Maynard is right that most music videos do the hard sell with the lead singer's face. I don't think that's such a terrible thing though. As humans, we connect more with faces than with animated poo.

//It's worked to their advantage in that by having videos that look like first year film school assignments,

don't you think the influence is the other way around ? heh

haha yeah, animated poo.

Robyn that was genuinely funny. Poo? naked old man? Delightfully cynical. I'm not a fan of Tool's videos although I like their songs.

do you see the contradiction ? hell, have you ever heard anyone else from tool's opinion about anything ? I don't even know the names of the other guys in the band.

I am a drummer so I go after the drummers words most of the time, but I found an interview with the whole band and quoted something that maynard said. Bumaged.

great another Tool fan *rolls eyes*

Oh be quiet DaveGrohl#1. :P

lol

Videos are a chance for a director to show you what they visualise when they hear the music. Some directors visualise big-breasted fly honeys washing cadillacs that jump up and down on hi-powered air shocks...

and who wouldn't??

Why should it matter what music is playing- hey Sharise, don't forget the windshield- that's it, a little more foam please...

More importantly, music videos in NZ are an excuse for a bands with members that can't afford to own cars to appear in one.

tee hee hee.

So true. . . . . and funny too!
