Check out some of these demos of Vocaloid, a product which synthesizes vocals. It has phoneme and all kinds of madness.
With this kind of thing covering the vocals, you could ditch some of the weaker pop singers and make sure your starlets are solely selected on their looks and appeal to relevant demographics. Hooray!
Facetiousness aside, I find the demos pretty incredible from a technical perspective. Must've taken lots and lots of work with phoneme recognition and all that kind of thing, not to mention trying to model life-like shifts into different registers.

If you were to get a pretty girl lip-synching along to a computer-generated voice, then it would have to be kept really, really secret.
Alternatively, if you were totally open about it, it might work. People don't get angry if a string quartet heard on a song is really on a synthesiser, so it might be accepted in a sort of modern technology context. Making videos without the artist appearing in it is increasingly more common (hello, Gorillaz!), and people happily see men jigging about being turntables live, so why not add a voice synthesiser to the instrument line-up?

I assume it works along the lines of Melodyne (ie, processing an audio channel, as opposed to synthesizing based on parameters) or somesuch. Wouldn't vocaloid be great so say, run over a guitar track, or over hand-synthesized singing (which is a fucking bitch to do, but a lot of fun)

I forgot to reply to this sooner, but it is actual synthesis. It's based on doing a whole lot of FFT of singers' voices and then doing heaps of number crunching based on the results... you create the melody line either using a MIDI file as input or a piano roll editor in the piece of software, and then determine phonemes, volume, etc.
Madness.
I wonder if it follows phonological rules of English, eg. the p in "spin" is a different p from in "pin"...
